Laid on Earth is a sketch of an aria for soprano and chamber orchestra, where all the orchestral parts are sung by me Jane Trowell, but without the soloist's line. It is based on Dido's Lament, the famous aria from the opera Dido and Aeneas, by Henry Purcell (1689). It's a homemade piece made on Bandlab of 3 mins 5 seconds, with outtakes left in because I found they added something.
It came about as a response to a course on eco-poetry that I did called Connecting While Solituding. This was created and offered by poets/artists kin'd and kin'd (based in England), during the first pandemic lockdown in 2020.  African-American man George Floyd had just been coldly murdered by a white US policeman Derek Chauvin, who kneeled on his neck until he suffocated. This ignited another upsurge in world-wide protests against white supremacy.   
I was also connecting to the deadened state of the earth of the fields near me, utterly controlled by Monsanto's 'Round-up' herbicide. 'On earth' felt more appropriate than 'in earth'. 
The performance by African-American opera singer Jessye Norman was in my ears this whole period.  Dido was a north African Queen of Carthage who died from grief at the loss of her love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOIAi2XwuWo
