Gregorian chants

The "Salve Regina" is the famous prayer "Hail, holy Queen" which is commonly prayed at the end of the Holy Rosary and is traditionally sung after Compline from Saturday before Trinity Sunday until the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent. It is attributed to Bl. Hermannus Contractus (aka Hermann of Reichenau) in the 11th century, but in its current form comes from the great Abbey of Cluny in the 12th century.

Salve Regina Solemn tone - Gregorian Chant

Performance of the Gregorian Salve Regina coupled with Josquin DesPres's cantus firmus motet in my own performance edition. 

The motet is a marvel of musical craftsmanship: not only does it utilize the Gregorian chant in its entirety in the Alto voice, but its structure is a strict double canon throughout: Soprano/Alto sing one strict canon; Tenor/Bass sing a different strict canon. Performed by Voces Novae et Antiquae under my direction May 16, 2004, in Philadelphia, PA.

The *Salve Regina,* also known as the "Hail Holy Queen," is a Marian hymn and one of four Marian antiphons sung at different seasons within the Christian liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. The *Salve Regina* is traditionally sung at Compline in the time from the Saturday before Trinity Sunday until the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent. "Hail Holy Queen" is also the final prayer of the Rosary.

Monks in the Middle Ages composed and performed this music as an integrated part of their daily occupation with Sacred Scripture. Throughout the centuries Gregorian chant has enriched and deepened the liturgy of the church, and has been a source of inspiration in every period of European music history. Under the leadership of Alexander M. Schweitzer, Consortium Vocale presents chants from the five Sundays of Lent, Palm Sunday and Good Friday, recorded in the medieval church at Ringsaker in Norway.

To the best of my knowledge, the melody of this chant, "Attende Domine", comes from a 17th century codex while the text comes from a 10th century Mozarabic codex. It speaks of the penitent's admission of his sin and guilt, without ever giving way to depression or despair, wonderfully captured by the joyful yet peaceful melody. The soul, full of trust, confesses its sins and calmly places itself in hands of its Redeemer, knowing, without a doubt, that He will forgive those who are truly sorry for their sins.
