Not for the first time she felt she had been used. From the start everything had been done according to the rules: the proper education, the right friends, the most suitable employment, the perfect execution of a flawless image. And yet here again she was: wasted cold and uninvolved. For decades she had been stuck, unable to get beyond cursory relationships, brief partnerships found in bars, parties, shopping galas and work-spaces, bound in depressants and stimulants and consummated in frivolous physical transactions. Drifting past windows, tremendous reflections of herself awakened, held in vast images, personalised holograms and softly dancing mannequins. Exultations to maintain the good life adjusted to her personal preferences stored in data about her body. The afternoon light refracted neon orange through the dome arching out, down and round, wide across the skyline: the glossy circuit of the world. She stared glumly about, so much perfect beauty realised, rendered, touched and presented, everything exactly as the screens said it should be. And yet here she was, empty, lost within this web of bright white smiling people, people who looked and lived just as she did; her stomach heaved, she was terribly alone and no amount of stimulant, DNA fixing or acquisition could alter this conscious realisation. Her demographic all knew the holy laws of science: heat death, symmetry, rational equilibrium and you cannot deny the laws of physics even in ordered societies of functioning human beings. She realised and recognised for too long reaction had deceived action: screw these bastards, she would eat them all. Her future lay formed and complete in disruption via antithesis to the norm. In a world of wholly calculated beauty the only way to truth was to be defiant in impulsive ugliness, ascension through depression and soul enriching cleanliness found in chaos and in filth.
Tzusing has previously released two well received E.P.s on Ron Morelli’s Long Island Electrical Systems, one man’s personal project to redefine the laws of modern dance music. Here Tzusing presents just over an hour of EBM informed sounds, relishing in harsh tones, unexpected samples, noisy techno and grungy electronics. Post-punk no-wave realised via synthesiser and drum machine: because when the digital sheen gets too much its analogue soul that shows the way to sonic heaven.

When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable marathon set recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. 2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000... if we have to clock it, so do you.

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around start-to-close combinations. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is 385 scintillating minutes of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes, chronicling a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than potentially any comparable point in the 21st century. A masterclass, and entirely self-contained in audio form.

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. A disco-dub cover of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM feels practically like a racecar.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few goals: tick off a handful of long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else. We sought to render an accurate picture of DJ culture in 2025 for the longhaul.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. Fantasy Techno collective DUST - a trio comprised of audio engineer Michael Sherburn, DIY nightlife entrepreneur John Barclay and multi-disciplinary artist Greem Jellyfish - announce today their debut full length, Agony Planet.

The nightmarish, alien horror narrative will be released January 22nd on Mike Simonetti’s new 2MR imprint. Immersed in Brooklyn's DIY rave community, all three members held roles in the genesis of notable extinct venues 285 Kent and Trip House, and now Bossa Nova Civic Club. In 2012 Sherburn and Barclay joined forces to found DUST and were joined shortly thereafter by Jellyfish; the following year they released their first 12”, “Onset of Decimation,” on Mannequin. Between 2013 and 2015, they released several more 12”, two on Mannequin, as well as one for Sci-Fi & Fantasy and one for 2MR.

Over these years, with Sherburn at the helm, the framework and themes for Agony Planet began to be conceptualized. Thirteen tracks, spanning in genre from digital hardcore, dungeon techno, and celestial ambience, are all held together by a theme of extravagant extraterrestrial warfare. Club-savvy techno engineering accompanied by frontwoman Greem Jellyfish’s bizarre monologues and warped screams beckon listeners on a journey through the occult mysticism of the nightmarish and torturous deep ocean of an alien hell. Agony Planet is an unrelenting and bold debut from a trio not afraid to explore the dark caverns of the underground.
