For 10 years, south west label Livity Sound has been at the forefront of a wave of sound that’s been dubbed as anything from “distinct”, to “Bristol techno”, “dubby and innovative” to “broken techno”, even “Bristol bass-techno”. Whatever you want to call it, Livity has been busy capturing a fragmented energy of bassy and hybrid UK club sounds for the last decade.

Ahead of their birthday party here in Farringdon on Friday 6th May, honcho Pev has gifted us a mix – a flavour of what to expect when *that* Bristol sound comes to the club.

Open-hearted house and techno from a Minneapolis mainstay who believes in the freedom of music. Autokinetic’s contribution to the series is a brand new live hardware set, featuring all original tracks written and performed by Mike McClure. 

The mix opens with a bird call sample recorded somewhere in the woods of Minnesota by Field Guide co-founder Lauryn Lesley, overlaid by moody chords that wouldn’t sound out of place in a deep house track. Tune in for one hour of warm, spacious, dub-tinged deep techno for the lover in you.

Stephan Laubner/STL's Homework LP was one of the first records I bought when I started DJing 'properly' back in 2007. 

If u don't know STL - very lofi, brittle, dubby, wooden, not overly bassy, discordant, minimal, scratchy, lush, strangely funky stuff, beautiful in its own way. And he does these locked grooves on most of his records, which I've mixed up here into a two hour special at 133⅓bpm. I recorded it with a new rotary EQ mixer (thanks Dean!) and then ran it through my Roland RE-201 Space Echo (thanks Maciej!)...

U might be surprised (if u listen) how organic and varied u can make a single loop, with the right EQing, cutting, boosting, fader tricks and so on - it was a lot of fun to mix, but I don't think this is a DJ thing just for other DJs.

This Friday’s mix celebrates some of the earlier work of Cleveland techno legend Dan Curtin. Herein you shall find a glorious selection of melodic, acidic electronica and tech house, rich with his complex, layered sound. I discovered Dan’s 1994 masterpiece The Silicon Dawn in the late 90s, and although I loved it dearly from the off, never really dug into his wonderfully diverse back catalogue to the extent that his talent warrants. Well, that’s all changed now :)

The tracklist on this mix is shorter than usual and with good reason. These tunes really deserve a chance to breathe, jam-packed as they are with ideas - you get three tracks’ worth of melodies, acidic riffs and bleeps in one. In a few cases it was hard to cut a tune even after 5 minutes, knowing yet another earworm was just around the corner. 

I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did compiling and making it - if you do, and weren’t overly familiar with Dan Curtin before, I strongly recommend picking up The Silicon Dawn for starters, it’s an absolute classic. Martyn for Little White Earbuds Podcast 174 (2013)

Bristol raised, London based Otik (@otikmusic) turned a lot of heads right from the off, and by now he has fully established himself as one of bass and techno's most interesting artists. His always original sounds on the likes of Keysound, Dext Recordings and Midland's Intergraded come with big kicks and curious leads that make for compelling listening. They always manage to be both physical yet emotive thanks to the ambiance around the inventive drum programming.

He manages to carry over that sense of the unknown yet the accessible into his always infectious DJ mixes. This week's podcast is a case in point: it's a meticulous piece of DJ craftsmanship that splices jungle, booming bass and skeletal UK techno together into a dark soundtrack that flails away wildly one minute then drills down to a hypnotic groove before cutting loose once more. Off-setting the dark with the light and the intense with the atmospheric in this way is a rare skill, but one that Otik has got down to a tee.
