"Larner began making works in the late 1980s in which she grew cultures of various substances in glass petri dishes like those found in a lab. She is interested in exploring the potential of biochemical processes as a tool for art-making. For these experiments, she combined varying items in a jelly-like nutrient called agar to promote bacterial growth. This yielded many fascinating visual qualities.

One such example is 𝘖𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘥, 𝘉𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘬, 𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘺, a sculpture titled after its key components. The dish on the left contains an orchid, buttermilk, and a penny added the day this exhibition opened. Rejecting the permanence of traditional sculptural materials, Larner embraces the instability of the organic process. As the elements interact, new color combinations and textures appear over time.

Larner enjoys wordplay and the use of the word "culture" to describe this biological system is of interest to her. When a bacterial culture reaches its peak growth, it is said to "bloom." The interconnectedness of nature and culture is an idea that Larner explores in many later works."
