Widely regarded as one of the most important female haiku poets, Fukuda Chiyo-ni was a Japanese poet of the Edo period. She started writing haiku early in her childhood and was strongly influenced by Basho’s poetry (probably because her teachers were his students).

The fundamentals in Basho’s poetry include: sabi (detached loneliness), wabi (poverty of spirit), hosomi (slenderness, sparseness), shiori (tenderness), sokkyo (spontaneity), makoto (sincerity), fuga (elegance), karumi (simplicity), kyakkan byosha (objectivity), and shiZen to hitotsu ni naru (oneness with nature). Fukuda Chiyo-ni was particularly interested in the latter, since most of her poetry deals with the realm of nature.

This was primarily an ambient track, but then a harmonic and rhythmic content showed up in my mind, and a couple of lines of lyrics immediately followed, so I guess it turned to be some kind of experimental ethnic desert blues... I don't know whether I'm right or wrong, I'm not so good at labelling music.
It's all about Africa, quite obviously. What if the same panic that many people in Western countries are experiencing now because of COVID-19 was a permanent condition? What if beside epidemics we had to face wars, famines, poverty, rapes, violence and structural corruption every single day of our life? I had these and other questions in my mind while recording this tune...

Last month my friend Jeff/Stonerjazz sent me a preview of this song he was about to release (https://soundcloud.com/user-911083679/01-i-still), and he was so kind to ask me if I wanted to add anything to it. We had been planning a collaboration for months, so I happily started to work on it, recording a few instrumental tracks. I got inspired from Jeff's amazing lyrics and vocal harmonies, and we're both happy about the way this tune turned out to sound.
A wonderful collaboration that we'd like to dedicate to all of you SoundCloud maestros, wishing everyone a happy new year. Peace, love and happiness...

captured in the eddy of the river bright, the still life painted with the colors of the soul, the dead-eyed and the damaged wander through the landscape of the misty light without compassion for our plight.
even in the darkest night there’s drops of paint, notes from my guitar, and tiny light that usher in such lush delights, though worthless in the merchants eye, the maestro has the wings to fly…
it’s a big mess, got a hole in my chest, taken down and crushed like apples in a press, i confess to everything i’ve ever done. every single one of us… on the run.
