It has been a while since I put together a producer tribute mix but over the weekend I found time to put together a mix of my good friend Dragan’s productions. 

The mix itself is just over 2hrs 30 and I could have carried on. So many great tracks over the years and a number of recent exclusives made selection tricky!

Christal is the label co/owner of the prominent Drum & Bass label - Smooth N Groove Records alongside Clen. The label is based out of Northampton, UK and Washington DC, USA. Smooth N Groove Records launched in May 2016 opening with their first release, Jrumhand’s Beaches & Countryside.

Smooth N Groove Records is a Drum & Bass label dedicated to bringing atmospheric, Funky, Soulful, rolling vibez from the best in the scene to the ears of all listeners. Since its conception Smooth N Groove has established a respectable place within the scene with full support from their peers and an ever growing fan base.

Chris has been running a club night since 2018 alongside Soul Deep Recordings head honcho, Scott Allen, Clen and John Crossland, AKA SoulStructure. Appropriately named Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove, representing artists from both labels to perform at their events. They have also taken the Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove brand to the west coast of America hosting events in Los Angeles at Respect, and San Francisco at Stamina.

The next Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove is planned to take place at Club 43, Northampton, UK, on August 5th.

****** THE STORY ******
On Saturday 1st of March 2014, I met a little girl called 'Lilli' and her wonderful family. 
Lilli is a 7 year old girl from Cleethorpes and she suffers with stage 3b of C.K.D. , which stands for 'Chronic Kidney Disease', 
which she had suffered from a traumatic birth.
Imagine being told that your child could die at any moment, 
after waking up from an operation, imagine having to contact a vicar to come baptize your child on that moment.
Now your imagination will become a realisation, a realisation that we have to take everything and every one for granted that are closest to us,
but not for me I also realised that the people who are not closest to you, have an immediate impact on your life. The smile on Lilli's face,
is the message of an angel. The message that this world holds more miracles than you think, its these miracles that need to be recognised to the world.
But some of these miracles have a more difficult time in being a miracle than others. Lilli gets very poorly at times and she is completely aware of the reason,
but a lot of people dont actually recognise the reason. People have answered it is caused by drinking, but how is that possible on a 7 year old, you are asking yourself right now.
Because it is not the answer and we are going to make this recognised! Which moves me from 1 miracle to another 2. Lilli's parents have also been through a lot themselves.
They have not had any support from support groups during the difficult times which are involved in the disease, despite that it didn't stop them from helping others,
as well as having a family of their own to look after. And now they are going to start their own Support/Awareness Group. 
They are aiming to start out with a little shop,
where people can have a coffee, ask for advise, and simply meet up for chats.
But they can't do that until they get some fundraising done.
Thats where I am asking everyone, all the people that know me and the ones that don't, to help by either sharing this post,
If your an artist and want to perform on a fundraising event to get in touch, If your in a company and want to support this project to also get in touch.

A lot hasn't been mentioned what they have all gone through,
so believe me that this will inspire you a lot. I haven't stopped smiling since this experience, and us all at 100% are going to do our best to support the set up of this wonderful project.

ChRiStAL - Producer Mixup (SoulTec)

Calibre, birth name Dominick Martin, is a drum and bass and liquid funk, music producer and DJ hailing from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He started producing at a young aged. He is a classically trained musician, playing a variety of musical instruments. Martin started producing Drum and Bass in 1995 and his first signed release was credited under the now defunct Quadrophonic label. 

He soon came to the attention of drum and bass DJ Fabio, who signed Calibre to his Creative Source label. While studying Fine Arts at the University of Ulster in Belfast, he became interested in the music of John Cage whose work was influential in titling Martin’s first album release Musique Concrète in 2001. Since his initial releases in 2001, Martin has been known for his consistent signature style and sound.

Short Circuits Magazine refers to him as "one of the quietest people in drum and bass". He shares tracks with only a small circle of friends. Martin has no website or even any blog presence to distribute his tracks online.

Calibre has released more albums than any other Drum n Bass artist. Over 15 years of music production, he has self-published over 60 singles and 10 albums. Also, according to UKF as of 2014, none of his original productions have ever been officially remixed.

ChRiStAL - THE GREENROOM Guest Mix (Bassdrive Radio) 19th February 2025

Dominick Martin aka Calibre is the 1st exclusively Irish Drum and Bass artist.

Classically trained in violin, he dropped this for drums and began playing in various bands, before finding early Detroit techno and house. His inspiration around that time is said to wander around the likes of Kenny Larkin, Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, the Orb.

His brother introduced Calibre to drum and bass and jungle, which at first he couldn’t follow the pattern as he felt it was too relentless and ‘beaty’, and so at that point he preferred four to the floor drumbeats from the US house style. 

From there he’s developed on slowly but surely to become an accomplished producer.

Since his early work for Dublin label Quadrophonic in 1998, Calibre has always delivered a sound that delves below the all too often unsatisfying drum and bass surface. 

His ability to bring a warm, natural feel to the digital landscape of drum and bass raised interest from Radio 1’s Fabio, leading to a critically acclaimed double album in 2001, entitled ‘Musique Concrete’ released on Fabio’s Creative Source imprint.

Since then Calibre has released for labels such as Soul:R, including collaboration work under the Mist:i:Cal moniker with the Manchester duo Marcus Intalex and ST Files (together MIST). Other label contributions have included CIA, 31, Defunked, V and Critical. 

Remixes have also been a heavy outlet for Calibre, with commissions from the likes of High Contrast, Badmarsh & Shri and american R&B-singer Jaheim, to name but a few.

After the popularity gained via my Calibre tribute mix I thought I owed it to you to put together a 2 hour mix of Calibre remixes.

Christal is the co/owner of the prominent Drum & Bass label - Smooth N Groove Records alongside Clen. The label is based out of Northampton, UK and Washington DC, USA. Smooth N Groove Records launched in May 2016 opening with their first release, Jrumhand’s Beaches & Countryside.

Smooth N Groove Records is a Drum & Bass label dedicated to bringing atmospheric, Funky, Soulful, rolling vibez from the best in the scene to the ears of all listeners. Since its conception Smooth N Groove has established a respectable place within the scene with full support from their peers and an ever growing fan base.

Christal has been running a club night since 2018 alongside Soul Deep Recordings head honcho, Scott Allen, Clen and John Crossland, AKA SoulStructure. Appropriately named Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove, representing artists from both labels to perform at their events. They have also taken the Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove brand to the west & east coasts of America hosting events in Los Angeles at Respect, Stamina, San Francisco, and Mosaic, Baltimore.

The next Soul Deep vs Smooth N Groove is planned to take place at Club 43, Northampton, UK, on June 21st 2025
