The interior of the keep was blacker still, sub-frequencies permeating the structure and making the stillness feel yet alive with morbid energy. Interference was running through his implants, he sensed their inactivity and felt alone, unprotected. Picking his way through the labyrinthine stark corridors to the nexus. The low hum intensified in the passage, the air became much colder – difficult to breathe.. Pulling his cloak tight around him he ducked through a nearby opening to search for brief respite. A brief thought activated his gland through instinct, coursing agents to heighten his senses in the gloom around his system. He was not ready for the ghastly sight that creeped through the darkness into his awareness… the distorted bodies of his people, victims of horrific experimentation – their forms cut, mangled and respliced – leering out of the gloom with undead eyes, implanted with vile mechanisms, animating their twisted forms to obscure disturbing purposes in the darkness. Reeling with horror, his eyes moving swiftly across the deformed mass of his kinsmen, hoping, praying not to see her in this morbid tangle, he staggered back out of the desecrated space of life beyond death, pushing onward to the core.. conserving his breath within his chest, heavy with sorrow… determined to save her from this fate.

Feeling the reassurance of his ancestor memories and technologies unfurled throughout his mind and body, his senses heightened, his movements swift and precise – he journeyed into the heart of the mountains, to the portal through which the great darkness had spilled. The bunker of those who had opened the doorway lay ahead of him, reaching out of the stone with towering menace.. powerful distortional energy still spilling up through the gaping entrance and reaching up into the bleak skies above and seeming to sap the very life from the surrounding reality. The microcomponents under the surface of his skin came to life, reacting to the immediate threat that reached through the air towards him – the field was quickly cast around him, repelling the cold and deathly dimensional tears that sought to eviscerate his body and rip him from this existence. Without delay he passed the threshold of the entrance, stepped into nothingness…

Scruggs & Sonny Jim had ridden long since dealing the final blow to the plantoid behemoth that had first impeded their journey some many months ago. They had left that beast’s lair far behind, and happily so for the stench of commingled acrid sap and gunpowder that filled it once the pair had finished. Astonished by the wonders of this alien land, their journey had lead them through biomes never before seen, in which red rock sandstone bore forth soaring forests filled with idyllic glens and treacherous thickets alike. Through these, they had climbed in an ascent to a high plateau, and it was at this peak that the pair saw a sight unrivaled by any in their journey thus far.

Rising above the forest that continued onwards below was a great stone structure of peaks and turrets, connected by a network of bridges that hung precariously over the ravines and canyons of the mountainside upon which it was built. The building’s spires rose to a height of such impractical grandiosity that the pair wondered what the purpose of such a structure could be or, more than likely, could have been. For all of the stature that it had certainly once commanded, the building was a shell of its former self, a relic of unique hubris worn bare by the selfsame forces that allowed the forest beneath it to thrive. No light shone from its windows and no figures stood atop its balconies, for whatever cataclysm had befallen its creators had driven them from this place long ago. All of these thoughts passed through Scrugg’s mind as he gazed upwards, and to synthesize them he asked a single question of his partner, Sonny Jim.

“Hey, Sonny Jim,”
“Yeah Scruggs?”
“Why the hell would you bother hauling rocks all the way up there?”

With nothing but a grunt and a shrug in response, Sonny Jim spurred his horse onwards, and the two resumed their journey, riding into the shadow cast by the great castle that lay above.

BURR OAK drive the EATBRAIN horde into the shadowed depths of their latest EP, DARK AGE, the latest from the duo, and a follow up to their previous releases Roots of Evil & Hawkeye on the label. Within, the duo unleashes six tracks stacked with aggressive tonalities and futuristic textures that unveil the latest in the sonic tale of these twin bassline masterminds.

It duly delivers, before plummeting once more into a 4KHD day-glo stepper.
