This recording is of the kids chattering away in English in the classroom, a guy I was working with was in the classroom at the same time talking about something. Te creepy thing about this recording is that you can hear a kid say "I'm so sexy" (he was dressed up as Lady Gaga at the time).

2011.02.03 - Classroom chatter

This recording is of someone playing a trumpet in a practice room somewhere in the 7th district in Budapest. I was walking along the street with my friend about 8pm and I heard it. Once again I didn't have my recorder with me as I had already recorded a sound but thought this would be much better. I used my friends phone to record the sound. Problem was as soon as I started recording a taxi pulled up outside the apartment block and kept its engine running.

This recording is of me running 2 drum sticks up and down the radiator in my hotel room. It really reminds me of the music video for Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" where one of the children run a stick across metal. It was recorded using an Alesis Protrack digital recorder.

Today's recording is of my friend shaving my head with hair clippers. I used my binaural microphones to record this sound as I thought it would make an interesting effect (make sure you listen to it with headphones on). I got the idea from a college project an old friend did years ago. It was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder and a pair of Roland CS-10EM binaural microphones.

Today's recording is of the ambience of the foyer/entrance of the Budapest History Museum in the Castle District. There was a couple of kids running about but apart from that it was pretty quiet. It was a really nice sounding room because of all the marble and massive ceilings. It was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of birds calling at 6am outside the hotel I'm staying at. I went for a walk because I went out early and was amazed at how loud they were. I boosted the signal a little and rolled off 200hz from the low frequencies because of the wind (and unfortunately you can hear a few cars in the background) but I think it's a really nice recording. It's made me think I'd like to record more of these sounds.

2011.03.15 - Birds outside at 6am

This recording is made up of 4 different recordings I made of this small waterfall I passed one afternoon in Austria. This was one of the days that I've truly noticed the difference between microphone positions. You can hear major differences between how close the microphone is and if I have the low cut on or off. The wind was a big problem, I can't wait for my new windshield to arrive! This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

2011.03.16 - Small waterfall samples

This recording is of a printer printing my flatemate's Thomann.de invoice. He gave me the idea yesterday but I wanted to record the soup so we waited for today and then recorded it. I put the printer in the cupboard next to the computer and hooked up a AKG D112 (which I thought would be nice for the bassier sounds of the printer) and an SE2200a (which I wanted to test out anyway because I'm going to buy a SE2000 in a few days). I mixed both of the tracks together in Pro Tools and then exported them. I think I captured a really nice sound. It's a shame if you listen carefully you can hear the rumble of the road outside. Trials and tribulations of living next to a main road.

2011.04.19 - Printer sounds

This recording is of my flatmate's electric drill. He was fixing the toilet-roll holder in our bathroom and I had to record it. I love the sound of power tools. He's a carpenter and is starting work again so I'm going to get a lot more of these. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of a contact microphone attached to my studio desk and with a some distortion sent through the desk onto the mic channel. I was experimenting with some table tapping and I realised that when I moved my hand over the contact mic the vibrations of the speakers were making the mic feedback. I experimented a little bit more and added my distortion guitar pedal. I really like the sound I came out with. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder, a home-made contact microphone and a Dan Electro Daddy-O distortion pedal.

This sound is of a contact microphone on a wooden desk being struck by a drum mallet. I really liked the sound the other day of the mallet hitting off the metal tray and it got me thinking that I should record some sounds people can use in their samplers etc. This is another great sound i think, nice and wooden and blunt. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

 This recording is of my laptop fan going crazy. I meant to record this sound a while ago but my laptop was making weird sounds so I picked them up instead. I love these kinds of sounds, very noisy and when you listen to them loud it feels like your hair is moving. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of me opening a 1.5litre bottle of water and pouring the water into an empty pint glass. I put the mic just slightly over the mouth of the glass to pick up both the sound of the bottle and the water hitting into the glass. I love the deep bass sound of the water pouring out of the bottle. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of a Renault car starting up and the engine running. I put a contact mic on the bonnet of my mum's car and asked her to start it up. I originally just wanted the sound of it starting but I liked the sound of it running as well. Because the mic is so small it didn't pick up much bottom end which is quite disappointing but I can always try it again with a better mic. This was recorded using a contact microphone and a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of some young kids that were playing at the skate park in Kelvingrove park in Glasgow. I was cycling past and noticed that it was especially busy due to the nice weather so I sat down for about ten minutes and recorded the sound of the bikes and skateboards. When I took the recording home I realised that there was a generator or something in the background that I never noticed. This was recorded using a pair of Roland CS-10EM binaural microphones and a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of a "witches laugh" halloween toy I circuit bent. I've been experimenting quite a bit recently with circuit bending and other various twisting of electronic circuits. I spent the morning trying out this toy. It wasn't very complicated but I managed to find a pitch down/slow down, pitch up/speed up and distortion on this toy which definitely gave good enough sounds to record.

This recording was taken in Kelvingrove Park about 9am. I was walking home from my girlfriends when I heard someone playing the bagpipes. I was wondering about the park for a while trying to find the source and when I finally found it I was quite disappointed as it was so close the the road which meant I picked up quite a lot of traffic. The guy who was playing wasn't the best but it was a nice thing to listen to while walking about. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of an Orange order marching band walking past the street adjacent to my girlfriend's flat hence the quiet recording. I missed recording the bands this year as I don't like being out in the streets when they are on. Luckily the band was on its own and I managed to catch them as they walked past. His was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of a moped that someone was about to drive away with before I managed to stop him so I could make this recording. I love the sounds of engines and I'm really glad I got this recording. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of the wind blowing in-between the 2 windows in my living room. I heard this weird screeching noise and I went to investigate and thought this was too good not to record. It's a very noisy recording but I think the sound is good enough to ignore that fact. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording was a lot of fun. I tried to find out what a 440Hz tone would sound like through binaural microphones while I was spinning on the spot. When I started the recording my flatmate had just decided to hoover so I got a really cool effect of 2 sound sources. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder and Roland CS-10EM binaural microphones.

This recording is an excerpt from a 15minute binaural recording I took on a trip to the shops. This part is of a bit of commotion that was happening in the local fruit shop. The man who owns the shop Saaim is an extremely friendly guy and always has friends about being loud and funny. I was standing in between 2 guys moving fruit about and an asian guy telling his kids off. I thought this made a nice little snippet of voices and the shops ambience. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder and Roland CS-10EM binaural microphones.

This recording is of me scratching a plate with a knife and fork. Everyone hates this sound but I love it. I was eating dinner and I accidently made the dreaded sound and I thought I might as well record it at length. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of a really squeaky door. I was in the KPC doing a bit of work and opened one of the old doors and realised how squeaky it was. I had to record it, it definitely has an interesting sound about it. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is a binaural recording I took of The Granary Bar men's bathroom. I was out for a drink with some friends and when I went to the bathroom I noticed this bizzare sound one of the cisterns was making. It sounds like some weird sci-fi effect and siren. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder and Roland CS-10EM binaural microphones.

This is another recording of my Korg Monotron but put through an Alesis Quadraverb that belongs to my flatmate. I was messing around with this and came out with some amazing space-like sounds. Amazing. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is the sound of me ripping up some wrapping paper on Christmas day. I had planned to try and do something else but I just didn't have time and I love this sound so much and it seemed appropriate enough for Christmas day. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of a prepared speaker I made using an old TV speaker, an empty tin of dog food and a battery. I got the idea from a book called Handmade Electronic Music (I'd recommend it to anyone). I've included a picture to give you a better idea as I don't think I'd be able to explain it that well. Basically I put a tin over the speaker cone and put lentils on top of them. I then attached a battery to the speaker and completed the circuit using 2 ring pulls to make a strange scratching sound. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of me putting a cassette tape into a tape player, taking it out, rewinding, playing etc. I got the idea a while ago from a Baconhead preview release of a tape. After every snippet of track there was these cool sounds of someone taking a tape out. I thought it would be nice if these kind of sounds were available to use freely. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of the next step of my Atari Punk Console I'm building. I finally managed to figure out how to use a 556 timer instead of 2 555s and I think the sounds are a lot more fuller than before. My plan is to convert it from breadboard to stripboard and house it a new case. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of a metal wasabi peas tin falling down the stairs in my apartment close then timestretched by 80%. My girlfriend requested this from me ages ago and only got around to doing it now. It's a great sound. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder and effected in Audacity.

This recording is of my Korg Monotron feeding back on itself. Since the Monotron has an input and an output I thought it'd be interesting to see what kind of feedback sounds (effected through the built-in filter) it came out with. Some definite interesting stuff. This was recorded using a Zoom H-1 digital recorder.

This recording is of me and my flatmates shouting happy new year and then timestretched by 70%. 

It's been a good year for recording and the project has gone mighty well I think. Thanks for all your support (all 7000 of you) I can imagine this project would have died a long time ago if it wasn't for the massive amount of praise and kind words from everyone. Sorry for the delay in posting this up but I'm sure you all know what New Year is like. 

I'm going to be releasing a DVD for sale of all 365 Days of Sound recordings along with all the unedited audio and so forth. I'll update the blogs when I figure out what I'm doing and what it contains.

I'm also planning on an exhibition sometime in 2012 so look out for news on this in the future.

2011.12.31 - Happy New Year (timestretched by 70%)

This is a drum beat and arpeggio written on a Casiotone MT-65 put through a broken Daddy-O distortion pedal belonging to my flatmate. I'm not sure if it's broken or it needs a new battery (probably the latter) but it did create a really nice digital-esque sound which I liked.

After drinking a load of tea I became quite gassy and couldn't stop burping. I recorded one of these burps but wanting to keep the sound to the usual 30 seconds I timestretched it to 30 seconds in Ableton Live. I chose Live because I like the "complex" timestretch effect within the program. I recorded this using my Alesis Protack digital recorder.

Today's recording is a crap mash-up I did of an annoying Spotify advert I was talking to my mate about. It's to stop people driving dangerously on country roads. The guy's voice is so annoying.

Here you will find 30 second recordings which can be listened to, downloaded and used in any way you see fit. Each sound has its own description so make sure you read it while you're listening.
