Deadbeat Disco - fabric x 3am Recordings Mix

An artist whose music has really been interesting, deep & also really stripped back is 1977 - I know almost nothing about this artist, but have all the 12"s he/she/they have featured on, including most of which seem to be on 1977's own label, For Those That Know. It's deep, leftfield, stripped back & sometimes very sparse, but there's something about 1977's work that just gets me hooked right in. If you want a very deep, moody, spacey afterhours mix, this may well be for you!

Mix #387 in our series comes from Bristol based dj & producer, Red Rack'em. Red Rack'em has previously released on Wolf Music & Innervisions. He has run Bergerac records since 2010 where he has also released on.

Red Rack'em had this to say about the mix..
"This mix is completely inspired by the life changing experience of living in Berlin between 2011-18. I was lucky enough to play in the city nearly every month for almost 8 years at a variety of great venues and I took full advantage of the adventurous set times I was often given. I was often booked to play the morning sets, which was amazing as I didn't have the pressure of the peak time set and I could really experiment in clubs with crowds who danced until midday and with powerful sound systems which made the records sound even better. I was able to play at a wide range of clubs as a DJ in Berlin because I could play most shades of house, techno (but not the super hard stuff), broken beat, disco, UKG stuff, jazzy stuff and more. This was actually an asset I think as I could play disco influenced stuff in the red room at Renate, the deepest house ever in the lobby at Blank or swingy raw techno and electro in the Silo at Muehle. 8 hours back to back with Franklin De Costa in the main room at Kater Holzig starting at 6am on a Sunday morning, playing in the morning after Bambounou at Chalet, warming up for Danny Wang at Renate, covering for Jazzanova at Fete De La Musique, playing the day after I arrived at Woodys birthday at Heidegluhn (there were a few untagged photos on FB after that) - the variety of DJing possible was amazing. 

I was often booked from 4-8am, 6-9am (breakfast set) or even sometimes 8-12am. I would try to have an early night - get a few hours of excited half sleep and then head to the club around 1 hour before I played. I used to turn up and people would be FUCKED but that was great as it meant they would appreciate the music more.  I would have a few rapid shots of vodka or pfeffi depending on the venue to get myself feeling a bit dizzy and begin to play. 3 hours is the standard set time in Berlin clubs which is a perfect set length for me - enough time to have a few peaks, twists and turns. Club wise, I would say this mix is inspired by playing at places like Loftus Hall circa 2012, Mothers Finest at Griessmuehle circa 2016 and of course all the times I played at About Blank back in the day. I never really had to compromise musically in Berlin - apart from playing a bit more harder and manic. Which suited me fine. 

In terms of tunes - it's vinyl only - not to be wanky - I just don't have any CDJs at home, quite a lot of it comes from Diamonds and Pearls distribution in Berlin - huge shouts to Johannes for being generous with the test pressings over the years and also some bits I picked up at the great Bikini Waxx shop in Berlin - I really like their selection there, and of course OYE records who were also my go to shop in Berlin. But yeah vibes wise, I just wanted to get down some of the more techno and jacking vibes I like. Hope you enjoy it. "

Currently melting in the French heat it's Exarde and Sakskøbing label head Ottuga providing us with the next episode of the art:cast series. The ever digging artist has compiled 66 minutes of bliss or to pick up  on Ottuga's bio he's been browsing through his collection, which to most parts consist of 80s and 90s music. #132 is musically moving in-between Deep, Tech- and Minimal, sometimes with a more housey note and sometimes with a slightly rougher tone but always melodic and always on point and certainly making one melt away a little bit faster.

You do not necessarily associate the Mexican electronic music scene with the deeper nuances and facets but rather with Dark Disco and Melodic Techno. All the more Glo My’s way to walk the initially-named path is even more impressive. Originally from Mexico City Jimena, Glo My’s real name, now resides in Italy’s north, Milan to be more precise, spreading her ever groovey yet melodically demanding and sound-wise ambitious music to and with the world. Therefore the artist provides her listeners with a potpourri of Deep House, Breaks, UK Garage and keeps a ravey and with abstract textures sprinkled vibe, which elegantly and smoothly unites the before-mentioned genres and influences to one homogenous sound-experience adding up to the Glo My-way. Her own events, Hell Town, surely have helped Glo My to dive deeper into compiling her sets and creating unique tonal ecstasies but these days the artist distinguishes herself with several productions, something Glo My has only been doing for a little longer than four years. Her latest addings to her catalogue of musical outings are her track Sang Woo on Lis Sarroca’s Maai label, as well as an EP on Womxn Records called Lejos de Casa and another single track, Hey Kiss Me, on Bass Water Freak Out. Having been kissed by Glo My’s style, probably as softly as it was once sung about, there’s only one thing left to say: It’s either the Glo My Way or no way at all. You can convince yourself as the Milanese by choice compiled the latest edition of the art:cast series and talks her latest outing on Maai with us alongside some spicy information of how she became involved with electronic music, her home-county’s influence on her and much more.

Subterranea are back in 2024 and leading the way with our 60th edition of the podcast series is deep-house maestro Al Bradley. Officially one of the nicest dudes around, always playing with a smile and ready for a hug, Al has been running the excellent 3am recordings since 2003 and DJing since he was a toddler (probably!) as It’s very rare that you’ll catch him without a record in his hands.

Gangstercast 58 comes from French house DJ/producer ‘Giom’ 

‘Funky, eclectic, quirky, smooth, melodic, yet always bumpy with a solid groove…’ It’s not easy trying to define the sound that Giom has created for himself over the years but when you attend one of his energetic DJ sets, sample one of his many remixes or dance to one of his chart-topping #1 singles, the message becomes clear: Giom is here to make you move your feet.
And maybe that’s why the London-based Frenchman’s music has been supported by such an impressive list of the world’s best DJs, from the underground kings to the big room soldiers, from Fedde Le Grand to DJ Sneak, Green Velvet to Joey Negro, David Vendetta to Jimpster, Mark Knight to Grant Nelson, Sharam Jey to Kolombo, it seems everybody needs a bit of the Giom sound in their DJ sets. 

In the Summer of 2014, his song “Dr. Zapp" topped the Beatport Indie / NuDisco Top 100 and to this day still remains in the Top 50. And at the end of 2014, Giom was Beatport’s 25th most downloaded Nu Disco artist and was voted Traxsource’s 29th most important Deep House artist of the year.

Giom has worked, released, toured and collaborated with the likes of Riva Starr, Joey Negro, Fred Everything, Loulou Records, Toolroom and Defected Records. He has also headlined some of the world’s best clubs such as Fabric (London), Privilege (Ibiza), LIV (Buenos Aires), 360 (Dubai) and has performed in over 30 countries. 

Away from house music, Giom’s preferred spot is behind the drum kit, which has seen him touring and recording for the likes of Alice Russell, The Nextmen and Kasabian.

Asking Giom how this mix represented him as an artist, he commented; “This mix is old school, mixed with new school, vinyl and digital, sexy, funky, silly, French and quite laid back. Like me!” 

Giom describes the House Gangster sound as “an urban/ghetto/attitude take on the sound we all love” 

When we asked Giom, What does House music mean to you? He replied with, “House music is something I can't explain, it's a feeling, a hypnotic groove, it's a movement. I mean, even bad house music makes me want to dance, that's how much I love it.”  

Telling us how he compiled this mix, he says, “I chose tracks that reminded of how I felt when I used to listen to DJ Sneak many years ago, but also some that represent me today and try to showcase who I am and what I'm about.”
