The Alive Again EP tries something different; it’s my effort to highlight elements of musical composition in a genre that too often prioritizes “cool” or “catchy” sounds over musicality. Each version of Alive Again was created with different production techniques, different song-writing styles and thus, each strives to invoke a unique emotional response. We listen to different genres of music depending on our states of mind, so I wanted people to enjoy the song behind Alive Again across multiple moods. Whether you’re feeling energetic, chill, or need a dose of vulnerability, there’s always a version to listen to.

I’m looking forward to following this format for a lot of my future releases. Since my early mashup days I’ve always been fascinated by combinations, how different elements of different things could work together to create something new. The Alive Again EP is the evolution of that fascination that I have with sound. The concept of that in literature is called intertextuality - the idea that every creative concept is influenced by a variety of creative predecessors. I’m using it as a framework for everything I make moving forward, taking bits and pieces of musical influence from lots of different genres and injecting it in dance music.

More specifically to the Alive Again project, it was an honor to work with Emma Hewitt, as her voice has perfectly complimented some of the most beautiful dance records of our time. Her haunting tone really completes the soundscape of Alive Again, pulling heart strings and effortlessly enveloping listeners in the euphoric atmosphere of the record. I've always viewed myself as a musician first, a producer second, and a performer third; this is the beginning of a new chapter for me, where I'll be doing more projects that showcase musicianship over anything else :)

I've always been dedicated to trying new things, and never repeating myself creatively. This was a pretty big departure from what I normally do, but I'm beyond stoked with the result and I REALLY hope you are too! My 4th record with Bright Lights and definitely a personal favorite, "Runaway" pulls influence from lots of different genres: from trap to pop to experimental dance. Heather and I wanted to go against the grain, but maintain familiarity and musicality; we hope you think we succeeded. BUT, most importantly, we hope you go absolutely apeshit wild while listening to this, the same way we do ;)

I wrote this song with Yeah Boy at his parents house, in Adelaide, while I was touring Australia 2 years ago. I'm very excited to release it today, after spending months perfecting every little sound / melody! 

This song is out on my label BLUME, which means all of the proceeds from streams & sales will go to charity. Last year we raised $200,000 for Pencils of Promise, and 7 new schools will be built in South America from that fundraising by September 2017. Our next goal is to raise $30,000 for the ACLU, and this song will help contribute to that goal :) Once we've raised that, I wanna let you guys decide what charity we give to next! Justin Blau, AKA 3LAU, is a rarity in the music industry: A successful recording artist, DJ, and producer whose main goal is not fame, but helping others. Raised in New York and Las Vegas by parents who emphasized the importance of charitable work, Blau left college, where he studied finance, and the promise of a career in business to pursue his dream of making music. He went on to release a string of well-received original tracks, including “How You Love Me,” “Is It Love,” “Fire,” “On My Mind,” “Hot Water,” and "Star Crossed," as well as remixes for Rihanna, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes, and Ariana Grande — all of which have racked up millions of streams. But unwilling to take and not give back, Blau has used his business savvy to parlay his success into doing good. In 2016 Blau launched Blume Records, an independent label with a ground-breaking model that harnesses the power of streaming to raise money for charitable causes. Earlier this year 3LAU released his debut album Ultraviolet featuring hit single "Touch," both reached #1 on the iTunes Electronic chart and all profits will be donated to F Cancer. Outside of the studio 3LAU has also built his reputation as a must see live performer, appearing at such major festivals as Electric Zoo, EDC Vegas, Lollapalooza, and Life Is Beautiful and tours extensively internationally.
