110 minutes of Japanese techno from its pre-2006 golden age.

One of the most underappreciated and rich lineages in electronic music comes from the deft hands and sharp minds of Japan's mid-90s techno pioneers, for whom techno was just as much about relentlessly driving forwards into the future, completely ignoring Western techno conventions, and making music for the brain, as it was about making people dance. This philosophy has underlined my DJ practice since its conception, and this mix is an ode to them.

Techno is not just socially countercultural in its establishment of modern rave culture, but also an intrinsically experimental genre in a purely musical sense. There is a lot of discourse on its socially countercultural roots; in the way it defied the day-night cycle, repurposed urban environments, and redefined how people recreate and find purpose and community. However, far less people talk about the mindset of the music itself in its progenitive form. Its Detroit pioneers were using new machinery to make music that sounded like absolutely nothing that had come before it. It was their priority to create a musical language that was completely, unrecognisably cutting-edge, and this priority is infused in all of the genre's earliest works. Understanding this foundation is essential to understanding techno's DNA.

As techno took off in the States, and then in Europe, this priority lessened in intensity as the genre's conventions were established, and the "normal-ness" of techno was concreted into popular consciousness. Across the other side of the world, however, Japan's techno golden age was about to spark into a fiery, defiant, bizarre, and aggressively creative peak. 

This burgeoning scene would go on to create some of the most singularly experimental works of techno the world has ever seen. This is not like any other regional techno scene that mirrors the conventions of the US or Europe, waiting for approval and validation by adopting its sounds. This is a separate lineage, a separate cultural tree, that developed *in parallel* to the techno we hear today, before arguably fizzling out around the mid-2010s as minimal techno began emerging as the dominant sonic power in the genre. 

Some of these tracks got me into techno, and they form a crucial cornerstone of my style and mode of expression as a DJ. 

Here are 110 minutes of some of this era's best work, glued and patterned together by myself.
We don't recapture techno's "golden age" by copying their sounds - we bring it back to life by thinking like they did.
