Bucharest duo Karpov Not Kasparov debut on Disco Halal with new single ‘Memory’, out 21st May.

Underpinned by a haunting synth-line and hypnotic vocals, ‘Memory’ is a psychedelia-laced leftfield pop jam that pairs Eastern influences with an infectious dancefloor sensibility. The release also features an remix from Crosstown Rebels head honcho and certified dancefloor alchemist Damian Lazarus, who delivers a chugging, acid-tinged take on his ‘Re-Shape’. Both versions of ‘Memory’ will feature on Karpov Not Kasparov’s forthcoming five-track EP of the same name, out 18th June.

Valeriu Borcos and Eduard Gabia aka Karpov not Kasparov describe what they do as ‘a musical game of chess between synthesizer and drums’. As well as releasing music on the likes of Fleeting Wax, Karakter Records and Local Records, the Romanian duo also incorporate an analogue visual artist and contemporary dancers into their live performances, resulting in a theatrical show and a kind of real-time soundtrack to the action around them.

Encompassing elements of downtempo, new-wave and alternative pop, stitched together with a leftfield dancefloor throb, the Disco Halal back-catalogue, filled with efforts from the likes of Polocorp, Budakid and Moscoman himself, has seen the imprint rapidly emerging from the once-overlooked nightlife and club scene of Tel Aviv into the worldwide spectrum.
 
‘Memory’ sees Disco Halal explore a fresh avenue while simultaneously staying true to the label’s ethos and trademark sound.

The wheel continued to turn under the weight of the machine. Upon the spinning top was an array of multi coloured statues, each with a ghoulish looking face and a marble smile. They were a creepy bunch, those things upon the carousel. The cold wind blew fiercely through the park, winter would soon be well and truly upon them and then the ice and snow would plunge this place into chaotic disarray. Up North the weather had already worsened but for now the wheel kept moving.

Four slices of smouldering, sexy, groove-toned deep disco, perfect for any lockdown or socially distanced scenario you can possibly imagine, they come courtesy of Tel Aviv's Niv Ast who's been making a name for himself in all the right places; Nein, Duro, Ombra, Relish and of course this very label with two big cameos last year remixing Fort Romeau and appearing on the 'Nume'ro 2' collection. This is his debut EP for Correspondent and arguably his biggest EP to date; 'I Remember' sets the hazy, introspective mood with purring spoken word and salubrious instrumentation before 'Ninja's Mothership' goes all-out psychedelic with sweeping guitar blasts and a slinky, writhing groove. Deeper again we hit pure uncut funk in the form of 'Hyperball Superball' before 'Poisson d'Argent' brings home the silver... A hook-up with good friend Cornelius Doctor, and easily the heaviest piece of the release, it's a chugging cosmic finale laced with layers of textures and sounds to completely lose yourself within. From France to Mexico via China: Motel77 take us to rowdy roadside destinations we didn't even know existed on their Duro EP debut: 'Savage'

The title track gets the engine running. Buckle up and prepare for a sweltering ride as the Shanghai-based French duo follow up their past successes on La Dame Noir with four moody, heavy missions. It's hot, it's sweaty, it's loaded it's with big sweeping guitar blasts. It's the sound of two men in full control of their machines. And it's backed by three more dark disco treats.

'Three On The Floor' raises its third leg and slams it on the table in two very distinct ways: the original slugs into hypnotic existence, layer by trippy percussive layer, while Sascha Funke ups the tempo with his creepier, more technoid flavoured twist.

Finally we arrive at our destination; the epic waves of 'It Is All Over'. At first it shimmers like a mirage, then slowly the ground opens out beneath and it sucks you up like a sinkhole. You think it's all over?

Belgian disco savants Rheinzand return with the second in a triptych of remix EPs. This one follows Obey Remixes, which came out Nov 6.

Kills & Kisses, the original track, comes off Rheinzand’s 2019 self-titled album and has been out as a single as well. The track was one of the more propulsive on the album with an almost micro-house sounding groove, driving down low, blossoming up top.

This bundle of remixes flow from that vein, expanding on the house angle of Rheinzand’s sound through the work of three fantastic artists.

Sicilian Musumeci aka Mauro di Martino tidies up the track and grooms that sweet, dreamy essence of the original into a timeless dance tune.

The Tel Aviv duo Red Axes’ deliver a more visceral take, stoking the bodily fires with deep, punchy bass and sharp staccato.

And last but not least, English-Japanese group Skylab deconstruct and almost perversely (in a good way) re-intensify the source material on a mesmeric trip to the chthonic planes of dance music.

The track also features as a special dub mix and instrumental version.
