Although Gabriel Berlanga has done the rounds, with records & mixes out on labels such as Correspondant, Nein and Melomana, undoubtedly here his Aeromuerto EP on Beachcoma brought this to us. A wonderful homage to analogue synths and the 16 step sequenced journeys they created brought aching joy to this R$N fella. Familiar at Razzmatazz, The Loft and Moog, Barcelona loves Undo.

With his own Factor City Records label (which has featured Club Bizarre, Offset and Morgan Hammer) to look after too, we asked the salt & pepper haired Catalonian to do a mix for us. And give us a little about his favourite food and stuff.

(uk)Sounding the promise of long days ahead and late nights to follow with its opening salvos, Chloé’s The Dawn heralds the return of the Paris-based DJ and producer, and a new dawn in her ever-evolving career.

Indeed, The Dawn is her inaugural release on her own label Lumière Noire, which she recently set up as a separate entity and of course for her infamous Rex Club night, which has since 2014 become a bit of a club house for Parisian electronic music fans. Operating Lumière Noire as a fully-fledged label will enable Chloé to release a new full-length album (of which The Dawn is the lead single) sometime in the next few months.

Over the ten-plus minutes of The Dawn, a spoken-word track languishes over melodic washes in a dramatic progression that evokes a novel, or noir-ish cinema – a method that the producer has taken a shine to since Take Care. This cultivation of the strange and the beautiful has become her calling card, putting her in a league with likeminded producers, who take the basic tenets of techno and inject them with their own singular poetic visions. A visual-arts analogue could be found in Noémie Goudal’s photographs which grace the EP’s cover as they will Chloé’s upcoming releases.

This stirring aesthetic gives The Dawn a slightly cerebral dimension, which is taken to new depths by Dixon’s stubbornly technoid remix. The Berlin-based whiz kid, who has over the last few years risen to the top of the international electronic music scene, inverts Chloé’s light-drenched, full-bodied production into a tense, captivating chiaroscuro.

The Dawn can also be explored via the “Chloé * IRCAM V2: The Dawn Interactive Mix” installation, which embodies Chloé’s music as an intimate interactive experience. It is one of the first offshoots of a constantly mutating collaboration between Chloé and the IRCAM Institution (www.ircam.fr/) that began in 2015.

Blindetonation hits double figures with a suitably notable new EP from Aurum Miles. Pardon Moi, Il Est Vilaine and Thomass Jackson all serve up sizzling remixes to complete this interesting package. 

Miles hails from Lithuania and has grown up around shoegaze, rock and British indie, and was later touched by electronic sounds. A keys, drums and guitar player who mixes up all these influences with narcotic weirdness, he has released on this label before and always impresses. 

The excellently elastic ‘Few Feets’ is a sleazy, low slung machine made disco jam with skewed synths, punk hits and dirty bass. Exotic vocals and dark spoken words flesh out the wonky groove and the whole thing is hugely intoxicating. ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ is a menacing number with more filthy bass guitar riffs that snake along an urban sounding landscape. More dehumanised vocals bring an edgy feel and cosmic synths serve to trip you out. Last original ‘Mojo’ completes this brilliant disco freak show with off kilter synths and guttural guitar riffs that add up to dark cosmic excellence. 

First to remix is Berlin Based New Wave Duo Pardon Moi aka James Brook and Thomas Freudenthal. They flip ‘Few Feets’ into a surging track with shooting synths that reach to the skies. It’s a spine tingling cut with plenty of intergalactic energy.  Then come the duo of Il Est Vilaine, who make twisted electronic music and get their machines dancing on labels like Dialect. Their take on ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ is libidinous and dripping with a moody tension. Propped up by rugged bass and coloured with naughty chords, it’s a psyched-out and vital version.  Lastly, label regular and esteemed modern disco man Thomass Jackson works ‘Mojo’ in to a characterfully chugging, flipped out number with scale-riding melodies and percolating bass that takes you on a real trip. 

This is an inventive package of perfectly macho dark disco.

Autarkic makes-up part of an unspoken alliance from Tel-Aviv, which is currently altering the state of contemporary house and techno music. Heavy Dreamer, the artist’s first, four-track outing on Life and Death, showcases much of what this bold movement is about, all while pushing it forward into progress.  

Ever-present tones of kraut and punk rock flow throughout the EP, beginning with Some Things To Keep, a pumping, warehouse floor-filler. Autarkic steps up to the mic, often re-amping and distorting his vocal delivery, placing it alongside finely-programmed keyboard riffs, tough drums and further psychedelia. Realistic Guru, the trippiest of the lot, is tailor-made for an early-morning DJ Tennis after-party excursion. Slowing down the pace on Powerhouse, Autarkic hints at moments of Bauhaus’ and Tones on Tail’s doom-and-dance pop, while offering-up a digital-only, stripped-down, bonus version. The title track stands as a testament to this new wave of artists, coming from the shores of Israel’s Mediterranean coastline. Bass, drums and guitar are recorded through bespoke boxes and presented through the lens of modernist club-culture.

Without a doubt Permanent Vacation's eponymous compilation, which is released every other year, not only marks the musical ending of every second calendar year but is a highlight to any music-enthusiast's record collection as well as a proper track- or dance floor potpourri of music for any DJ. With the fifth compilation Permanent Vacation remains true to its sound yet reinvents itself by giving emerging and established artists a platform to share their current musical approaches. Multi-talented Chloé certainly belongs to the latter named as the Parisian has contributed several musical pieces in various ways to the electronic music scene and a wider audience. As the label-founder of Lumiere Noire Records she recently compiled its anniversary compilation to now present her latest track 'Through the Bells' on Permanent Vacation 5. The track is built just around what the title suggests: bell-sounds. Starting off with a multi-layered bassline and shallow 80s influenced chords Chloé implements the track-carrying and looped bell-element after that unfolds a hypnotic effect through its monotony which the producer skillfully breaks open by partly replacing the effaced chords, giving them more space and strike up a symbiosis with the first occurring and newly placed bell-sounds. Therefore 'Through the Bells' is an ongoing dancefloor relationship that swaps sounds but not the love for its intention to surprise and fascinate the audience, the listeners of Chloé's music.

Permanent Vacation 5 will be released November 23rd.
