1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.
Hello, my name's Ole. Originally from the northwestern coast of Germany i moved to Hamburg in 1998. I got into records and djing very quickly. Originally from the guitar oriented more punk/metal/grunge range i heavily started listening and buying drum'n'bass, broken and down beats back in the days. From this the progression took me into soul, funk, jazz, hiphop and reggae. After a few years as bedroom dj i took the step and got some gigs as part of bigger party line-ups. Further onward i became resident of some bars around Hamburgs Reeperbahn and stated as booker for the Pony Bar around 2003. This gave me the chance to dj a lot myself. I got in contact with many other dj's and artists at the time and with a few we started recurring events like the burnin' ballroom, playing mostly funk, soul, hiphop, reggae and mashup stuff. For about the last ten years i found my partner in crime in Holger aka drop-out. We share  a lot of taste and appetite for funky music and we sort of look alike ;-) So it possibly maybe was logical, we turned out to name ourselves the Funk Bear Brothers. With long residencies at Yoko Mono Bar and BernsteinBar we also had the chance to get into the Jazz Cafe / Mojo Club, where we had much fun until the crisis came up. Not to forget we also do boat tours with Bendix aka DJ HeavyK & Doc Schlucki (the Disco Dudes), where we play AOR, BoogieFunk, ModernSoul, Disco and other sunbeams mostly. The trip is called "Welcome On Soul Board" and will hopefully progress when we all can enjoy the nightlife again.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.
First of all this term "celebration" is sort of ambivalent to me. It's about the music in the first place. So the format comes after this. But i really love to find songs on 7"s for a few reasons. The pragmatic points are weight and size. If you carry fifty 12" Drum'n'Bass maxis to the venue it's heavy like the set you may play with them. I love Albums too, but i have a lot LP's which don't turn me on as a whole. So getting the essential tunes on 7" is a thrill to me too. Though I must admit, i'm a lazy hunter. With 7"s i got confronted with paying attention to the filpside. It happened quite often, that i had my favorite tune but forgot about listening to the b-side. Experiencing this i tried to get better. And there are so many good tunes hidden on the dark side of the hits. 
A main thing that keeps me buying small records even though they are pricey compared to LPs is the fact that there are so many labels that drop good stuff on this format. Last but not least as visual being i like the variety of designs of labels, sleeves, boxsets and these things. When it comes to filling the bags for parties, 7"s make it possible to bring a wide span of styles to the booth. So you have a great flexibility. But you always forget one good tune at home. 

3) An hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?
At first i was unsure, what to put on the turntables. But the strange times we are living in and my latest additions together made it happen that i choose to stay slow and sweet on this soulful journey. All the songs are about love, regrett, confession and straighten it out. But above that they are about keeping up your head and not loosing hope. 

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 
Right now with the clubs and bars closed down it's quite simple. If you check linktr.ee/svolanski you get linked to my mixcloud, twitch, insta and so on. I'm really looking forward to pack my bags again for DJ-Nights at the Jazz Cafe (Mojo Club HH) and Frau Hedi, a harbour ship, which makes 3-4 hour trips with DJs. Together with my Funk Bear Brother Holger and the two Disco Dudes Bendix (Delicious Bisquits HH) and Doc Schlucki i had a lot of funk there. Hopefully we can set sails in the future again.

1 Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection

My name is Eve alias Selecta Kwaby. To keep it short… when I play strictly Jamaican flavoured music it’s Selecta Kwaby’s turn. ;) When I play it in a global way without fixed on style and musical boarders it’s Eve’s turn! ;) I live in the South of Germany in a wonderful city with the Name Tübingen.  I started to collect records around 2005. In this time it was not much known about the late obscure 70s and early 80s of Jamaican and UK Reggae productions. The only chance was to get them on vinyl. Therefore, it all began. I’m deeply connected with Jamaican Music.  However, there was and is also much love for many different styles. Eve likes it funky, fuzzy, groovey, raw and sometimes folky but global. Selecta Kwaby loves it with bass. My goal is always to dig deep into it. I would not call me a DJ but a collector… and I love to take my records out.  

2 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7”. Can you tell us a bit about what you love about this format?

Hehe, this is a good question. Nowadays you can find a lot of tunes on compilations that were only released on 7 inches back in the days, but for me it’s not about to have the song, but it’s about to have it on 7 inch. Why? Because the 7 inch is the real deal for me! It’s about the one song on it! Okay, if you have luck, you have a double sider. Moreover, well, sometimes you have an EP that runs on 45. You drop the needle and you listen to the track you want to listen to. That’s what it’s all about. And don’t forget: The picture sleeves the label sleeves, hehehe. Another 45 nerd told me it’s an erotic thing about the 7 inches and well, yeah that fits. 

3 Four hours of vinyl goodness…can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

For me a guest mix is always an opportunity to sort out some tunes for something special. This mix deals not with funky stuff. This one is about to be psychedelic and raw. Some tunes are downtempo, some are uptempo! And hell yeah, some are really weird and freaky. I sorted out tunes form 16 countries. Mostly 60s to 70s, but also some contemporary tunes. Some play clean and some are dusty. It starts in Russia and ends in Peru. Every continent is represented. 

4 Where can people catch you/ listen to your music?

Im a member of a Reggae Sound (Roots Typhoon) and a member of Global Taste Project. You can find mixes on Mixcloud.  I played at many places in Tübingen and Stuttgart. And sometimes I was invited to play in other cities in Germany. In Tübingen we have “Drehscheibe Tübingen”, a very familiar thing,  where we come together as collectors, DJ’s, and we spin records together.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I have been DJing and collecting records since my pre-teen years in the 80s. I always liked playing records, making music in bands, writing and talking about music and so forth.
My record collection has quite an emphasis on Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and Jazz, but you can find almost anything somewhere in there. When I was younger I always liked the fastest track on a record the most, as I was a (probably hyperactive) energetic dancer. And I loved knowing the words and stops and breaks of records. A tendency to be nerdy about these things. It helps with song selection in sets.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

It is a very practical format to play, I think. 170 records in the box and off to a good night with music. My dear friend Keb Darge put me on in the end, when I was lucky enough to have my brother living in London and Keb inviting me to DJ at his club nights. A box of 45s and off I went. 
That kind of pushed me over the edge from compilations and LPs finally, I guess. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

It is a little Hip Hop heavy with some Soul, Funk and odd bits in there. I was going through a stack of records with some brand new releases, some records I purchased in the last months, a few releases on the Origu label and a few favorites from somewhere in another stack that was right next to that. It is a few reissues, originals and re-edits. All records I enjoy. I just started with the first one and let the records find their way in my hands...

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Well, I think I started collecting records back in 2003 shortly after I've started producing.  I was totally into Downbeat music at that time, labels like Ninja Tune and Tru Thoughts with artists like Quantic, Bonobo, Blockhead and TM Juke were right up my alley and I bought all their records. Around the same time I started producing. First I also did Downbeat music, but I quickly was getting into the Funk/Soul thing and released several records over the next decade. 2016 I somehow had enough of this sound and started working on Downbeat music again, because originally I wanted to release that kind of music when I was getting into music producing. In 2018 my first Keno album 'Around The Corner' was released, two years later the collaboration album 'Transatlantyk' I did with Tristan de Liège from Los Angeles was released. Later this year I will release a collection of remixes and one offs in the 'Out Past The Current' album and for 2022 I plan to release my third Keno studio album. After being more than a decade part of the electronic Funk/Soul scene it feels like coming home producing Downbeat music again. The last 5-6 years I started listening more and more to Downbeat music again and luckily there are great new albums released pushing this genre to the next level.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

It's a nice and handy format, simple and short.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?  

Well the mix contains some old and some modern cuts, some live Band songs and some produced more beat driven tracks. I've tried to vary a bit between live and produced music trying to put them together.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music?

My music is on most of all platforms available, I like Bandcamp a lot. I also have a radio-show called 'Motor Jazz' every second Friday on Soho Radio London, but on the radio show I also play heavy club tunes, not just Downbeat, Electronica  and Jazz. 1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.
Well, since over 40 years I am collecting records. New Wave (later called Post Punk) was my musical socialisation in the 80s. Later followed by strong researches in 60s music and then Black Music. Funk, Soul, Disco and lots of Jazz. Then came Brazilian music in all genres.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.
In my special case 45/7 is not valid. All Brazilian sevens play with 33rpm (and have a small hole) That's the reason why I called my mix Compactos em 33. Compactos is the portugues word for singles. I always loved the idea of having a unique track on a small record. A musical gemm, not hidden between other tracks on album, but alone on one side of a record. With his own cover artwork in the best case. And - even better - a track that was only released on seven inches. A unique piece of art.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?
The first half an hour is dedicated to Boogie and disco. Not the strongest musical discipline in Brazil but the examples chosen are in my humble opinion masterpieces and have not been rereleased. Well at least not all of them ... Tamanqueiro has been pressed recently as original facsimile by Rush Hour. The only seven ever made by Elizio de Buzios. Kaito is pretty unknown. Probably Cara Feia is also the only record he made. Elza Soares who recently died aged 92 in Rio is undoubtedly one of the tough queens of samba. Here's a nice Boogie on the flip side of an 80s seven. Carlos Dafé and Emilio Santiago are two well-known singers with a strong groovy attitude. Miss Lene played pop music and disco in the early 80s. Sorridente is a killer uptempo disco track. Waldirene is one of these hundreds of female singers in Brazilian pop music who is nailing it down on Queima como fogo. The Free Sound Orchestra is strongly connected to the Brazilian label Som Livre, Free sound in portuguese, an orchestra and choir that did hundreds of soundtracks for the telenovelas on Brazilian television. Rush is a masterpiece. Similarities to Quincy Jones' Summer in the city are purely coincidental... Melo da cuica is from Azymüth's first 4-track EP. A very reduced futuristic bass driven song from 1975. Carlos Mendes, guitarist and singer/songwriter presents his easy and airy Hora só. Typical Minas sound. Grupo Ébano has released their music on CD only. But I decided to make an acetate of two of the best tracks. So here's Pé no Chão from a seven! Sociedade Anônima made one seven in 1972. Stunning sounds on this one that remind me very much of New Wave of the early 80s. Psych Prog? Typical prog sounds brings us Stilo Set. Something completely different is coming from a young band called Os Tremendões on their only 4-track EP. Fresh Mod psych sounds on organ. Another female singer I can't find any info on is Watusi. But the fresh and naive way to sing speaks for itself. We are amidst the sounds of the so called jovem guarda, the young generation, maybe beat generation of Brazil. Gerson Côrtes who got fame as one of the leading figures in the funk movement later in the 70s named Gerson King Combo then, started as a beat musician. Tito Madi instead is a representative of the velha guarda, a Samba crooner. We hear a tasteful Samba Jazz from him. Followed by Djalma Dias and his version of Cidade Vazia. Continental records releases from the 60s are always appealing to collectors. Here's a singer called Rahyr with a track called Garota Castelinho from '64. Last but not least Maria Lucia with her version of Maria Moita, an often covered track composed by Carlos Lyra and Vinicius de Moraes.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Hey Im Nadim a 22 year old DJ and Beatmaker from Cologne. I started collecting records when I lived in England in 2015 and since then I haven’t stopped spending most of my money for vinyl. I think I have around 1.500 records at the moment in my flat. A lot of my records (especially jazz) also came from my fathers collection who is a jazz musician and my grandmother + her friends collection who are all big jazz fans but didn’t listen to their records anymore.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

What I love about 7 inches is that the sound is always dope and that I always have them for any set that I play. Whether traveling from Budapest to Berlin and then to Cologne my 7” are always there to back me up!

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

Honestly it was a pretty spontaneous mix haha. I just went after what felt right (which is what i usually do when I dj) and just went with the flow.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Hailing from South-East France, I have been traveling for more than ten years between Europe and South-America and lived for four years in Bogotá. During my stay, I have been digging vinyl all over the country; from the small hidden stores in the bustling capital to the dusty shops of the vibrant Cali, the world-class city of salsa. My record collection is made up almost entirely of traditional Colombian and Latin music with genres such as cumbia, música del pacifico, afro and salsa.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I love this format because it's very easy to transport and very handy when you're playing a set. It also takes more time and you have to concentrate more during the digging part, which makes it very rewarding when you find a gem in a pile of 7" vinyl, especially tracks that were only released in that format. Last but not least, I think the art on the labels is sometimes really beautiful.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... Can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

This mix is the result of a digging trip I did in Mexico in March this year. I visited a lot of local markets and shops during my stay in Mexico City. The mix is made up of some Mexican cumbia from records that used to be in a jukebox, but also from Colombian superstar bands like Los Corraleros de Majagual, Venezuelan legend Pastor Lopez or cumbia master Lisandro Meza. Much of the Colombian and South American music has been released on Mexican labels such as Musart, Peerles and its subsidiary Tucan. So this is a selection of all these 7-inches I came across during my stay. The mix closes with "Como la Flor'' by the Mexican-American queen Selena and a new cumbia version of the famous "Voyage, Voyage" by the producer and record collector Turbo Sonidero from San Jose, California.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

In 2017, I started organising the Vinileros del Trópico event series with some friends in Bogotá, and since 2019 I've been curating the same event in Berlin at a bar called Rotbart.  The idea behind the event is to bring together different DJs who share the same love for vinyl and Latin music. My next gig will be my debut at the RIAA Bar in Hamburg with my dear friend and Salvadoran selector Radio Vampiro.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

My name is Rhina, born in Germany with Indian roots. I have been collecting music and creating mixtapes since I was a child. My father was a tape collector and I also started as a kid to eagerly wait for my favourite songs on the radio to record them on tape. In my youth I was dedicated to spreading music and burning CD's to the people of my hometown Bonn (mostly 90s Hip-Hop like A Tribe Called Quest etc.). Besides, I have been a dancer since the age of 6 and music has always been an indispensable part of my life. I bought my first records when I was a teenager & always listened to them secretly on the hi-fi stereo system when my parents weren't at home. My collection consists mainly of 70’s Jazz. As I'm a Jazz-Funk and Disco DJ, I often have to remind myself not to buy too much Jazz and also to invest in records that I can play at gigs :D.It's also important for me to buy records in record shops or flea markets rather than online. The story or a favourable price is much more important to me than the quantity of my collection. Hardly anything material makes me as happy as a record or an instrument. Every time I play a record, I feel infinitely blessed. 

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

Every 7“ record I found with my favourite tracks is like gold to me. But the reason why I specifically collect 7" is because I realized, shockingly, that I'm almost not able to carry 2 full record cases. I never thought records could be so heavy *laughing*. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

A varied and spontaneous mix of Funk, Brazil, Soul, Jazz-Funk, in between also not perfectly mastered tracks like “Uku Kuut - Funky“ and a final Indian song that I dedicate to my father.

On 23.12.23 I'm playing at Blue Shell Cologne and in 2024 I'm going on tour in Europe again. Plus on platforms like 45/7 Vinyl Club. <3

Well, I think I started collecting records back in 2003 shortly after I've started producing.
I was totally into Ninja Tune and Tru Thoughts stuff at this time.
I had a lot to discover at this point. Diggin at Discogs and shops was a new fresh thing for me.
I started collecting Downtempo music and was then exploring Funk & Soul. I was never into rare
records cause I did not have the money, I collected more contemporary club music.
So my collection contains mostly modern Funk, Soul and Club music and less 60' or 70's music.
Around 2010 my love for library music began. But I wasn't collecting the "mainstream" labels
like KPM than more small and obscure labels which had sometimes less than 20 releases. But with library music it's the same thing you have with rare funk records....they are very expensive unless you have a lucky find somewhere.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

Hmm...I'm not sure. It's handy, it's a simple format...each song has it's own side... does this make sense?

I've tried to select tunes under the view of "The new, the classic and the unexplored" to have a good mixture.

I always loved this format. Handy and good to handle in a club. Many
pressings have a clear and loud/powerful sound.

Starting with some obsuce japanese cover version of nancy sinatras "my baby
shot me down", getting some more uptempo by playing some fresh and funky

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I started DJing just for fun with a few records that I’ve got from my dad. From there I made my way and focused almost exclusively onto 80s funk, Boogie, Breakdance and Funk. We were throwing parties as 'The Brides' in Berlin just to be able celebrating the music that was hard to find here at this time. Diggin deeper into that kind of music I became very interested in contemporary funk and the worldwide scene around it. We started to book Funk DJs. Nowadays my electrofunk sets are infused with Afro, Disco House gems and all that’s groovy. I would consider myself more as a DJ than a collector. I am not hoarding them, but finding records became definitely an obsession. 

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I have to admit that I didn’t appreciate the 7" for a long time. I came late across this scene through meeting Marc Hype. Nowadays I've been intentionally checking those crates too. I think my brighter awareness got also shaped by the contemporary funk scene through labels like Voyage Funktastique, the Funkfreaks and Starcreature universal vibrations who released mostly on 7". I love about the format that it has formed a very specific scene around it. It's been mostly people who are referred to as 'turntablists'. The 7" challenged me to play differently to create faster changes. My focus is still on the 12". I like the long versions of songs and that these records often include a remix version or even acapella. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

My selection for 45/7 was open format and the mix mirrors perfectly my 7" collection. Since they are often quite cheap I end up getting records I wouldn't intentionally include in my DJ Sets. 'Kutte' for example was inspired by Katmando & Marc Hypes Funkvergnügen (a unique mix of German funk and rare grooves)I loved those mixes. I like interpretations of songs like Bacao Rhythm does. I fell immediately in love with the cooperation of Dâm Funk and Snoopzilla. The whole Westcoast Cali vibe that ties up to DJ Quik, Suga Free, Mac Dre... Also I love uplifting messages and 'lemme do my thang, cause I'mma do my thang - only you can do you, so do it, do it, do it!' :) is exactly what I need to hear from time to time. ‚In a trance‘ was a record I found together with around 25 other super cheap 7" in a recordshop in Liège. Jamie Lidell (Mr.Oizo Remix) came across in Berlin. I listened a lot to his Multiply album that's why this 7" catched my attention and I did nothing wrong. What I want to add is that I played most of the records in this mix for the first time publicly!

My top records change from time to time but I am a fan of Chic and how those tracks are composed in so many layers. I resisted many years playing so called 'classics' but I can't dismiss the power and joy those jams bring to people. You feel an interconnectedness beyond words through music as an universal language. One all-time-favorite of mine is 'Boogie fire' from Mac Thornhill; my Jam! Cameo's 'she's strange' accompanied me since I've started playing records. My first DJ name was SHIH in accordance to this track. Since I felt always like an alien; different, not belonging the song became my theme song. Shirley Lites 'heat you up (meltdown) among many other great West End Records releases is a favorite electrofunk gem. I found 'sabes que hora es' randomly at the fleamarket and I really love this Italo-Euro-Disco track. It's a real firecracker!

Dj Sigher is the currently owner of Super Disco Edits record label, and also a producer for uk rap group The Gutter Snypes since 1994.1.  

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I go by the name of Dj Sigher.  Am currently owner of Super Disco Edits record label, and also producer for uk rap group The Gutter Snypes since 1994.. Since i got the bug of being a B-Boy, around 1983-84 ive started collecting records. First of all stuff you could get in your local shops, and then moving on to finding out about breaks and samples around 1986.
My collection is a mish mash of Soul, Jazz, Funk,lp's,  and anything that has a sample on it.
The last 15 or more years have been heavily concentrated on soul 45's.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

For me i love the 45 format, especially U.S Soul 45's. Of course the early period of the 1960's and 70's there wasnt '12 records
so this was the desired format of stuff i love to collect the most.  It means you could get a run of 500 pressed up pretty cheap at 
a pressing plant, and so around every street corner kats could get some green together and put their hopes and dreams on a 45rpm
hoping it got some local airplay and picked up by a major.
Now even more so, 45's are just the right length of time, without the listener getting bored like that 8 min '12.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

Ive done a few mixes of late, so i decided with this mix to change it up a little, i just pretty much pick a bunch of 45's from 
my collection, so i havent visited for a while, a few new ones and then see how they roll together. I dont map out a mix, but 
prefer it when it flows as if you were playing at a club or event.

firstly, to me it`s all about the haptic and secondly, in some cases the real diamonds can be found only on 7" inches.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Strictly Kev aka DJ Food, I've been DJing for over 30 years now and collecting vinyl for longer. I've no idea how many records I have but it's probably in the region of 10,000 7", 12" and LPs plus lots of other odd formats that I collect as well as just the music. It's housed in my studio in custom built shelves that include drawers for 45s, cassettes and CDs. I like that the songs are short and sweet, there's no chaff so the track says what it needs to and then it's done, which is essentially what a DJ needs in today's ADD society. I like the size and weight of them compared to 12"s and LPs because I've used digital means to DJ for 8 years now and, when I do go back and play vinyl, I don't want to break my back like I used to lugging a 30 kilo record box around. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

There's a lot of guitars, fuzz and distortion in this one, lots of solid drums too, I'm really digging a lot of the funkier side of rock and psyche in my 45 sets and this comes out here.  Some of it is where rock and electronica cross over though so you'll have DJ Shadow remixing John Spencer Blues Explosion, Brendan Lynch's dub mixes of Paul Weller or Graham Massey's Toolshed project. There's also straight up rock by The Zutons, The Go! Team or Primal Scream and more diggers delights like The Protein Bros, Chaps and Alan Copeland. I try and have a good mix of contemporary stuff in there too, the 45 format shouldn't always be about old, hard to find stuff from the 60s and 70s, there's plenty of great new music around, just as hard to find too.

I'm DJ/Producer for over 20 years living in Jersey, Channel Islands... Recently release a track with Oxygen from SoundSci on Dinked45 Records, record collection mainly into hip-hop/funk/soul and reggae but have a very eclectic taste so won't rule anything out as you'll guess by the mix lol.  Been buying 7" on and off for last 10 years, especially been keen on finding the samples which have been used in hip-hop records for Djing, not fanatically about having the original but nice to have if can afford it :)

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

A lot more fun and challenging to DJ with as the tracks are finite time length to play, there's also the investment not only with buying the track but time spent tracking down something, alot easy with the internet now though.

To be honest, it was a bunch of tracks thrown together, nothing planned. Kind of wanted it to reflect parts of my dj sets that's all and records i like.

1)     Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I’ve started collecting records fifteen years ago and, with the passing years, as my addiction to buying records grew, my collection got bigger, counting now about 1500 singles/LPs and somewhere between 500 and 1000  45/7's. Although in the beginning I bought only hip-hop albums and singles and a few funk and jazz records for the breaks, now I collect old (and newly made) organic music from different parts of the world; I suppose it’s my way of discovering various cultures. 
 
2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

Of course. I like it because it’s very DJ friendly: eighty 12’’ records weigh a lot more than the same amount of 45/7 records. Plus, these records usually have one song per side which makes them very easy to sort through.
 
3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

Well, all I can say is that I threw in mostly old rhythm & blues songs, infused with an exotic/latin twist, together with some classic northern soul tunes, but also a few fresh tracks in the beginning. I like to let the songs create the story of the mix.

You can find me spinning records at different venues mainly in Bucharest and around the country. Together with my friends I started Vinyl, Rum, Tapas & Wine – a series of parties with the main objective to bring back vinyl as the main ingredient for social gatherings.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection

SoulBrigada was initiated 2009 by Alex D. & Fabio V. as a platform for own events in the trijunction on the lake of constance in the south of germany. Alex also started to spin records on this events and abroad. In 2011 the first studio collaboration leads to an exclusive vinyl only release with their remix of a track by Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura Band on Poets Club Records.
Due to time time constraints and spatial distance Fabio had to withdraw from this project a little bit so that Alex runs nowadays SoulBrigada mainly. Further tracks was released in 2013 on 7inch on english label KAT45 Records and the own 2016-founded Matasuna Records. The focus is now on the label work and spreading the Matasuna vibe on festivals and clubs across europe.
The record collection is approx. 1500 records – one third 7inches and two third 10“ and 12“. I collect a broad range of different records from all over the world. I also like to buy records on my vacations like in Japan, California, Greece, Portugal etc. So for me my collection is more than only music – it's also a memory to special moments of my life. Most of the time when i put out a vinyl from the collection these memories came back to mind.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

It's more challenging to play with 7inches: on one hand the mixing of the tracks because there's no long in- or outros like on an extended 12“ Disco Single. On the other hand you have to be focused a lot on the mix because of the short play time of the 7“. But i like this kind of challange.
And also the size and weight of the record bag is optimal for trips abroad.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I was influenced by Djs & Diggers like Paul Nice, Mr. Scruff, Kenny Dope or DJ Muro which couldn't be categorized in a specific genre and suprised again and again with their musical taste. It would be a loss to be restricted to a certain genre because there's so incredible good music out there. This is also the philosophy of SoulBrigada: as the name associates, Soulmusic is obligatory but there isn't a limit to this genre – the main point is the SOUL in the music.
So this exclusive 7inch vinyl only mix reflects excellent the musical bandwith of the SoulBrigada sound. It's ranging from Reggae, Calypso, Brazil, Tropical, Orienta l, Asia over to Funk, Breaks, Boogie towards Dubby Disco.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Hello, my name is Will aka Skinshape, I do old school sounding psychedelic-funky-souly-stoner-rock music... Or something like that. I'm working on my fourth album now. I also run a label called Horus Records, we do exclusively roots reggae. I'm also a record trader and collector. Living in London provides a lot of opportunities for record digging. I've been collecting for about 8 years... First reggae mostly, then moving into soul and funk, and now I'm more into African music.


2. 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

The 7" for some reason is a near-mythical thing. I don't know quite what it is about it... But something grabs me a lot more than an LP does. 7" Just feels like the coolest format, and I love the artwork on 7" records. If you're into certain genres, especially reggae, the 7" is really the only way to go! 


3. One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I've pulled out my favourite 7" singles, but then realised there are still way too many. I've worked it down to records that I can't really let go of, or that I'm just really into at the moment! It starts in the USA, then hops across the Atlantic to Africa (West to East), then hops back across to the Caribbean for a final blast of a few of my favourite reggae singles.

I'm a DJ, drummer, producer and part time designer based in London. I drum with The Expansions, and co-run the Albert's Favourites record label. After studying fine-art, my passion turned to music. I started collecting records and making my own electronic music in the year 2000. These days my collection is eclectic but firmly rooted around anything soulful, whether it's Funk, Disco and Latin or Hip Hop. Open ears, open mind!

There's an abundance or amazing compilations and and incredible album re-issues on 12" on the market today, but is there anything purer than the 7"? I think not. They are just so damn punchy! 
3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

This mix seemed like a nice excuse to 'dig in my own crates' and pull out some things that I wouldn't necessarily play out or have neglected of late, alongside some very recent releases. With a lot of my recorded mixes I like to start steady and gradually crank the tempo up throughout the mix, so we start with a kind of Hip Hop tempo and finish up somewhere in the disco-house zone (apart some the dubby comedown finale). There's all kinds of things going on in the mix, enjoy the ride!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I produce, DJ and perform live with my band Daytoner and I've been making records for 10 years under this artist name, although I have been DJ'ing since the mid 90s and collecting records since I was a teenager. I live in the far west of the UK (in Cornwall) and spend a lot of my spare time either in my studio shed or out in the lovely Cornish countryside and coastline with my wife and kids.

2. 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format. 

It's been great to see the revival of 7" vinyl, which is a lot less back-breaking than a DJ bag of 80 12" vinyls! As a producer, the format also focusses the mind, condensing track length to less than 4 minutes, which is more than enough for most ideas anyway. The 7" also makes vinyl production affordable for DiY labels such as mine (Cabin Pressure Recordings) as they can be made relatively cheaply in short runs of 300-500 copies. 

3. One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I thought I'd supply a varied mix to include a lot of the genres that I enjoy, along with some of my major influences, so I've included a favourite from my youth (Primal Scream's 'Loaded' that I bought back in 1990 when I was at University) and a very dusty old Chess copy of Fontella Bass' 'Rescue Me', right through to brand new releases such as my own 'Apache Street' edit. I'm also very grateful to producer and label friends such as Smoove, Aldo Vanucci, The Allergies, 45 Live and Dinked Records for supplying me with their funk-fuelled 7s.

4. Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

In the last few years I've been focussing on producing and performing with my band and we've been out and about across the UK playing at over 50 festivals and events. This Summer we'll be playing at another 6 festivals including Mostly Jazz, Wilderness, Love Summer & Beautiful Days, plus we'll be supporting Craig Charles at his Funk and Soul Club events as we have been doing regularly since 2016. Online there's lots of my music in the usual places including Soundcloud, Mixcloud, YouTube and Spotify, not forgetting record stores such as Juno, Jazzman etc

I always find these Top 5 lists really hard as it's always changing, but right now I'd have to go for...

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough (Tamla 1967)
One of the few records that always gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I hear it and it often seems to be an emotional moment when playing it out, especially when everyone sings the chorus in unison. I think its the Jamerson bass line that's the goosebumps trigger, but I just also love the whole Berry Gordy, Tamla Motown hit factory story in that tiny Detroit basement, during such upheaval in US society.

Googie Rene Combo - Smokey Joe's La La (Class 1966)
I remember buying Wah Wah 45's re-release of this for 99p from a little Cornish record shop (Solo Records) and I still treasure it as it's always been a go to record for almost any DJ set. I feel it distills all the excitement and optimism of the 60s into 3 minutes of jazz piano, breaks and crowd noise.

Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band - Apache (Pride 1973)
The importance of this record in the birth of hip-hop is well documented in the movie 'Sample This'. Personally I've always loved this break and as my 'Apache Street' 7" reveals I still use it today.

Primal Scream - Loaded (Creation 1990)
In my teens I was an indie rock fan, then this release became my introduction to the wide world of dance music and it still sounds fresh nearly 30 years on.

Daytoner - Little Wonder (Wack 2009) 
Indulgent I know, but it was my very first Daytoner vinyl release (and it's got a young Stevie on it)!

45/7 #59 ARTIST: DAYTONER

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

My name is Theo Keating, and I’m from London. I’ve made records and DJ’ed under various names - Fake Blood, Touché, The Wiseguys, The Black Ghosts… I’ve been DJing and collecting records since I was a kid in the late 80’s. My collection used to also include a huge amount of hip-hop, house, techno etc, but I sold all of that and just kept what I’ve always called “The Crates” ie: all my records (orig pressings) from the mid-60’s to the mid-80’s that I’ve bought, dug, and dirtied my hands for over the years! 

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format:

I’m by no means a 45 obsessive, but being a digger means 45’s are of course part of the fun. I got into listening and buying old music not only from an interest in original breaks and nuggets as a teenager, but also through London’s Rare Groove scene in ’87 / ’88,  and listening to pirate radio shows at that time - and of course 7”s were at the core of that sound. There was something so magical about finding and owning a 7” of some raw tune. Not only funk, but whatever you could find and take a chance on. I’m sure many people have answered this question better than myself, though. I love 45’s, but I also love LP’s. Whatever delivers those pieces of joy!

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

Rather than do a mix based around any one style or genre, I wanted to play a range of stuff. The only theme was that the tempo would increase gradually as the mix went on. And that was it! I just drew the records that made sense - or didn’t make sense! That’s the fun part.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Preddy my name or Herr Preddy or Preddy Tendergrass. Since my parents bought me in my early childhood some K-Tel and Arcade Comps records complete hits my soul. From Rock to New Wave to No Wave to early Rap to Electronics to Ska to Soul to Disco to House to Jazz to Bossa Nova to Dancehall to Rocksteady to Folk to nearly everything that catch my attention is in my collection. Starting to spin beginning of the 1990s at legendary BeatBox Club in Wuppertal, worked long time for Groove Attack Record Shop & Distribution to finally be on my own Deejaywise, with my Label personal rec., as a Radio Host with my Show Rare & Well Done for Radio Superfly in Vienna and doin sometimes some productions with DJ Buzz from the Waxolutionists. 

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about 

what you love about the format.
Always in love with the small ones. In my youth it was the Format if you couldn't afford with your pocket money the big ones. The love for the 45s stayed and later on it started to be the main medium for sounds like Funk, Soul, Reggae etc. Then people around started to turn digital because of backproblems or fed up of carring tons of Vinyl around i decided to spin and travel more and more with my small Avonberatercase. Same result and more fun. And for the DJ-side: the small ones can be bitchy as hell, hard to handle but this only multiply the fun if you get them in control.....

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your
selection for your 45/7 mix?

This mix is like a shortened Clubnight. I like to warm up with slow and moody tunes, turn the level more up, let it collapse, boiling it up again and ending with something or obscure. First record is very important, the rest follows istinctly. 
  
4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music?

I dunno have a residency. Back and forth all the time. In Vienna at the Dachboden/25 Hours Hotel, Heuer am Karlsplatz, Kleinod Stadtgarten, or you can catch me at Blockpartys like Zweitbester Strassenfest, Events like Liquid Market, Future Prop Tech, Vienna Flatland Jam,...otherwise in Bukarest, Cologne, Zürich, Madrid, Istanbul etc.

45/7 #63 ARTIST: PREDDY TENDERGRASS

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I've been playing drums since the late 80s and started DJing with a friend I met at University in the early 90s. At that point I only had a handful of records - mostly albums, some borrowed from my parents collection, some that I'd been finding in second hand shops, and a few new releases. Musical styles were fairly broad, I'd been really into blues & jazz for some time, and that crossed over into the rare groove sounds that were all around London at that time, which led back to deeper funk sounds. All these styles were being heavily sampled in the contemporary hip hop of the era, so I was soon spending plenty on new hip hop whilst simultaneously trying to catch up on tracks I'd been aware of in the late 80s, and enjoyed, but hadn't been buying. Luckily, 2nd hand vinyl was plentiful and cheap in those days, so the collection was growing pretty rapidly at that time. I guess by now I have a couple of thousand 12" singles, and a similar number of albums, plus around 1000 7"s - so it takes a bit more organising these days, but it's always great to dig back through - especially for mixes like this!

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

As with a lot of people my age, 7's were some of the first records I bought as a kid, and I had my parent's old record player in my bedroom from the age of about 10. I ended up with a bunch of Beatles and Rolling Stones 45s that I'd find at jumble sales, and remember spending time with a tennis racket trying to do the Shadows dance steps like Hank Marvin. The first new record I bought was probably something by The Police or The Beat I think - both early 80s school disco favourites! The 7" was still a pop format in the early 90s, so as dance music crossed over into mainstream charts, it was still the cheapest way of getting tunes to DJ with, so I have a bunch of things from that era on 7" but not on 12". Buying Hip Hop 45s for 99p seems like only yesterday! ;)

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I had a bit of rummage through the 45 shelves and pulled a few things that I haven't played out for a while, alongside some new releases, some of my own and a couple of classics that are always in my box. The Jazzman and Now Again re-issues from the early 00s are all great - making available things that hadn't been on 45 before. Jazzman did great work in selecting some super hard-to-find library tracks, and Now Again just keep digging up the most amazing unreleased music from the 60s and 70s. I have a bit of a thing for covers of 'Tramp' and the Julie Driscoll / Brian Auger version is one of my favourites, such a lazy but irresistible groove - always gets people moving. DJ Format is always a surefire hit on the dancefloor, whether it's with his original productions or themed cut n paste megamixes, and 'Saturday Night Theme' is a great party hip hop track. Likewise, Quantic's work has covered so much ground over the last 20 years and he has a great ear for an arrangement. His cover of 'That Thing' showcases his knack in that area once again.

I’m Simon Hill part of the psychedelic soul band MNP. Also playing bass in The Palms and a bit of everything in Beta Hector. I also make animation by the name of Manalishi. Life ain’t too shabby. I’ve been collecting vinyl for 25 years. Help!

The mix is half stuff I’ve bought during fun times in lockdown. I just grabbed a shoebox and pulled out the rest of my babies. Some of them are filthy rotten and some are just pure beauty.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Im Elado a DJ from Tel Aviv, playing more than 25 years now. Started buying records as a child and haven't stopped since. My first records were house from Italy and Chicago I bought back in 88'. Over the years I've collected lots of funk & disco 45's, and almost every other genre. 
I played lots of genres and did lots of parties in Tel Aviv over the years. Today I play a very wide selection that is around disco from all over the world, stuff from Africa, India, Middle East, Far East and I love Japanese disco, 90's rare India jams, 80's europop and many other things. Lately I started to work in the studio and make my own edits. My first edit was released last month, its a 45 on Red Motorbike Berlin based label. In mid November I will have my first edit e.p on the Brooklyn Razorntape label with 4 of my edits. I continue working and making new edits to rare and unknown tunes, turning them into something new for today's dancefloors. The edits already have support from DJ's such Antal, Jkriv, James Murphy & more. Its a great feeling to have your idols playing your stuff. I already played in Berlin and Switzerland top clubs few years ago and I hope this will open the gates for more gigs around the world.  

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

45 records is big love for me. Over the years I insisted on playing vinyl only in gigs. I found the 7" a great solution for having lots of music without needing a moving company for each gig. I can carry in these bags for 3 days non stop. I always find it amazing that I can carry so many records to a gig and have everything I need in the club. Furthermore - a limited space on this format forces you to be sharp and super focused. Blink - and the tune is finished. I have some recorded sets where you can hear 1-2 seconds of surface noise only - that's when someone came to say hello haha..  I think it's good for the crowd to have their DJ "awake" and I get bored when the DJ is switching tunes every 7 minutes. With 45's there's no room for "DJ pose" of smoking your cigarette, putting your hands in the air or looking at chicks. You have to work, work and that makes a hell of a good party in the end. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I started with some laid back sunny tunes, some brazilian stuff, my balearic folk disco edit, than some serious b-boy boogie stuff, old & new, than some vocal boogie disco tunes also from the nu boogie labels mixed with the original stuff, that some hard hitting 130 bpm party disco in the end. 

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

Im playing in the top spots in Tel Aviv between one lockdown to another, now im in Varna actually, so i might gonna play here and maybe in other east Europe places (hit me for booking offers!) and hopefully in Berlin after all the covid thing is over. you can check the Red Motorbike 45 and wait for the edits e.p for more. Soon I'm releasing a youtube 2 hours set with lots of my new edits and the stuff i dig at the mo.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I'm Shatter Hands, hailing from Svendborg, Denmark. I'm mainly in to production, but I've been DJ'ing and scratching since the mid '00's. Raised on Portishead and DJ Shadow, but born again via the so-called beat scene of the '10's. Autodidact digger with a collection of ca. 1500 pieces. Not too many 7's but they've become my fav format in recent years. My collection consists mainly of instrumental beats, rap, some house and jazz, past and present.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I used to skip the 7 bins when I was digging and now I blame myself. I've come to love the format because of the size and portability, the labels and their artwork and not having to skip through tracks when DJ'ing.

3) 50 minutes of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

News of MF DOOM's passing really got to me, so I'm starting out, and ending, with him and Madlib. In between you'll find beats, rap and some psych/fuzz/heavy on the drums kinda stuff. It's a short mix, given the size of my collection, but It'll give you an idea of what I listen to and play these days.
