Nu Groove was one of the pioneering house music labels to ever come out of New York. Originally active between 1988 and 1992, its mark on the scene was to be felt for years to come. The cult label has been lovingly cared for by Defected since 2017, who acquired the catalogue and re-mastered and re-delivered it for a digital world. Now Nu Groove will release new productions for the first time in almost three decades, with NYC pioneer Jovonn the first to release new music on the imprint. Coming in with storming two tracker ‘Random / Get Over It’, this pair of flawlessly executed cuts illustrate Jovonn’s innate production abilities. From the headsy funk of ‘Random’ with its playful synths and jazz-infused horns, to the shift in energy for something wavier and almost otherworldly in ‘Get Over It’ (Soulfrican Soul Bass Dub Mix), Jovonn’s production mastery is that of a true house master.

Originally released on wax in 1999 by Defected during the label's first year of operation, 4 To The Floor now picks up the record and delivers and renovated package for the nostalgic 90's kids, with a brand new update from Capriccio alongside their original version. Bringing classic house to contemporary audiences, Capriccio's array of mixes on 'Everybody Get Up' represents the best of vintage disco house and serves as a gem from a golden year of dance music.

Electronic music pioneer and Poker Flat boss Steve Bug is a name that needs little introduction, as one of Germany's true house masters he has consistently pushed musical boundaries to become a taste maker and trend-setter of a generation. Joining forces once more with regular collaborator Clé for their joint Nu Groove debut, the pair who have been behind a vast number of elite club cuts now deliver 'Let It Go / Suitcase In A Box' for an imprint steeped in house history. Opening with 'Let It Go', ethereal strings and an enriched, buttery vocal are paired with a wickedly deep bassline and acidic synths for a track that sounds like it was ripped straight from a 90s NYC dancefloor, while the accompanying Bassmix offers a headsier, dub-like alternative. 'Suitcase In A Box' is a little tougher in its composition, as Steve Bug & Clé's patented old-school drums and another hefty dose of acid influence are layered upon a relentless beat for a track destined for in-the-know floors.

Josh One is a DJ and producer from Los Angeles. Over twenty years on from its original release in 1994, ‘God Made Me Phunky’ still sounds fresh as ever. Produced by MD X-Press (aka Chicago House legend Mike Dunn), the layering of garage beats, an addictive bassline and Mike’s distinctive vocals make for a track that, with its self-proclaiming and uplifting message, has stayed relevant more than two decades later. This updated release includes contemporary remixes from Franky Rizardo and Marlon Hoffstadt, alongside some mixes from the archives from the likes of X-Press 2, Harry Romero, Groove Assassin and Mike Dunn himself. Izmabad (aka Simbad & Karizma) also step up, with an effortlessly lushed-out, grooving mix, making this a must-cop package.

MD X-Spress 'God Made Me Phunky'(Original Mix)

Groovestyle is the alias of the Chicago producer Eric Miller, more famously known as E-Smoove. E-Smoove worked for a number of years with Steve 'Silk' Hurley before releasing 'Insatiable' which would be a #1 hit in the US Dance Chart. First released back in 1994, Groovestyle's 'Freedom Train' uses the sound of a stream train over rolling bass and an inspirational vocal sample, while 'Love' goes in a different direction, offering dreamy Rhodes piano and a crisp 909 drum loop, the formula for a great house record. The Tribal Mix of 'Love' strips back the track for a more club-ready hit, much like the D Boogies 4 Change mix of 'Freedom Train' from Derrick Carter, packing a heavier punch than the originals. Both 'No Ears' edits are courtesy of Rob Mello, intensifying the train samples and giving the record a nervous energy. This must-have package is rounded off by an Instrumental mix of 'Freedom Train', essential house listening from Chicago.

Groovestyle 'Love' (Underground Mix)

An evergreen 90s club classic, ‘4 You’, produced by 4th Measure Men (one of the rarer production aliases of Marc Kinchen) in 1993, and originally released on the house maestro’s own Area 10 label, gets a new lease of life on 4 To The Floor. This release features five mixes of the title track including two of the original mixes by MK showcasing his blossoming signature house sound, as well as later remixes by Maya Jane Coles, 2000 and One and an upfront mix by DJ Steaw, now all available together on one release for the first time.

‘4 You' features MK’s signature 90s-era bumping bassline, sax accents and a vocal chop typical of all his very best work. In his remix he layers more percussion whereas Maya Jane Coles takes her production into deeper territory. With his remix created exclusively for the 2017 Defected compilation DJ Haus In The House, DJ Steaw brings things bang up to date, and finally Dutch producer 2000 and One puts his no-holds-barred stamp on the track with a peak-time remix. A jumpier more uptempo counterpart, the MK Dub of ‘Given’, another 4th Measure Men production, rounds off this completely timeless release.

With one of the most recognisable piano hooks in house music history, DJ Dove’s ‘Illusions’ is a mid-90s gem. Originally released on Deep Groove Records, it captured the laidback melodic sensibilities of the era, balanced by that unmistakeable piano line which was recorded live along with the strings. Rediscovered on 4 To The Floor with a brand new remix from house veteran Gerd, ‘Illusions’ sounds super fresh and fit for any discerning contemporary dancefloor. Gerd’s NY Stomp Tribute Mix adds synths and DJ-friendly drum breaks, exploring the full potential of the production and giving it the attention it deserves.

4 To The Floor present Sandy Rivera’s feel-good late-90s house anthem ‘Come Into My Room’ featuring LT Brown in this mega nine-track release. The much-loved Take It Back Mix, a Sandy Rivera and Jose Burgos (aka Soulvision) production, has repeated soft funk-infused riffs behind husky vocals and bass kicks, alongside their Dub version. This package also features Sandy’s Original Mix and the bouncing 09 Remix. UK producer Mark Knight showcases his blossoming sound in his warped Toolroom Boys Mix with its wobbling bassline. Sandy teams up with Jay Sealée under their D-Menace alias for their bass-heavy remix. D-Dub Beats, Sand Beats and Take It Back Accapella mixes round off this exceptionally uplifting package.

‘Lovelee Dae’, a classic pumper by New Jersey duo Blaze from 1996, gets all the love it deserves on 4 To The Floor in a ten-track mega release featuring remixes from the likes of Frankie Bones, Carl Craig and more. The Original and Radio Edit versions feature a classic deep house bassline, soft hi-hats and distinctive melodic keys. Austrian DJ Joyce Muniz drops the tempo and lays down a bouncy refrain in her laid-back remix. 20:20 Vision, aka Carl Finlow and Ralph Lawson, add bongo beats in their deeper-reaching extended version. The Beloved, aka Jon and Helena Marsh, inject even more groove into their Vocal Rmx, Chris Duckenfield provides a percussive Primitive Dub and Italian duo Supersonic Lovers get funky in their disco-inflicted remix. Brooklyn production titan Frankie Bones brings his famed Summer of Love sound to his previously unreleased Rave Redux mix featuring a thumping bass-line and acid-rave-centric drum rolls. Detroit techno king Carl Craig puts his stamp on the track in his warped 70 Degrees And Sunny Mix rounding off an impressive remix package. Long live this infectiously groovy house music classic.

4 To The Floor revisits Jon Cutler’s soulful hit ‘It’s Yours’ in a ten-track package featuring remixes from the likes of Joey Negro, NiCe7 and many more. Originally released in 2001, the Brooklyn producer Jon Cutler enlisted E-Man on the instantly recognisable vocal hook, coupled with live sax, on his Original Distance Music and Jon’s B-Side Breakdown mixes. Joey Negro ups the tempo and puts the vocals at the forefront of his composition with blissed-out keys. Frankie Feliciano breaks the arrangement right down in his Ricanstruction Mix adding in down-tempo drums and heavenly guitar, as well as a pacier and synth-focused Retro Mix. Italian production duo NiCe7 bring in their tech-house influences on a deeper and darker remix and DJ Fudge lays down a pumping bassline over groovy synth flares. David Penn provides a more main room sound in his Vocal Mix and German DJ Ian Pooley injects some funk with upbeat sax riffs in his Main Mix.
