Welcome to episode #7 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast sees Imran Mirza celebrate incredible albums from the 1990s alongside a variety of Blue-in-Green:RADIO presenters. This episode sees Imran and Rhonda from San Jose, California - and host of Ride The Vibe - delve into the sophomore album release of revered vocalist, Aaliyah.

Released in 1996, 'One in a Million' proved to be a huge hit for the vocalist along with the project's chief collaborators, Timbaland and Missy Elliott - marking the beginning of their musical union which would garner several notable collaborations over the years.  'One in a Million' has sold over three million copies in the US and eight million copies worldwide.

The album produced six singles, 'If Your Girl Only Knew', 'One in a Million', 'Got to Give It Up', '4 Page Letter', 'Hot Like Fire', and 'The One I Gave My Heart To', with the last becoming the album's highest-charting single, peaking at nine on the US Billboard Hot 100.

90s State of Mind #7: "One in a Million" (w/Rhonda)

Welcome to episode #8 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and this week, the pair revisit the debut album from Kelis, 'Kaleidoscope'.

Released in 1999, 'Kaleidoscope' was produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes making the album a breakout project for all three.  Despite underperforming in the US, the album was a moderate success overseas receiving a gold certification in the UK.  Spawning three singles including 'Caught Out There', 'Good Stuff' and 'Get Along With You', the album also held the distinction of ranking #391 in Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

90s State of Mind #8: "Kaleidoscope" (w/Rhonda)

Welcome to episode #9 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and this week, the pair revisit the debut album from Lauryn Hill, 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'.

Released in 1998, the debut solo album album from Lauryn Hill followed the massive success of 'The Score' by The Fugees.  Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras had solified their name within hip-hop following the sophomore Fugees album and its success paved the way for the solo projects that would follow-on afterwards.  The one and only studio album album from Hill was spearheaded by three singles and ten Grammy nominations winning five of those.  The album has gone on to sell over 20 million copies worldwide making it one of the biggest selling records of all time and a definitive 90s album.

90s State of Mind #9: "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" (w/Rhonda)

Welcome to Episode #10 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and this week, the pair revisit the one-&-only album from incomparable Groove Theory.

Released in 1995 through Epic Records - and spearheaded by the classic single 'Tell Me' - the pairing of vocalist Amel Larrieux and producer Bryce Wilson resulted in one of 90s R&B's most beloved projects.  Having achieved moderate success upon release, the duo disbanded a few years after their album release and although there have been efforts to resurrect the Groove Theory name, no new full-lengths have come to fruition.  The 90s was certainly a prolific decade for each member with Amel Larrieux having established herself as a solo star with the first of what would be five solo albums having been released in 1999 along with multiple guest appearances on projects by The Roots and Guru.  Wilson continued his run of excellent productions jumping behind the boards for colossal names like Mary J Blige, Changing Faces and Toni Braxton.

90s State of Mind #10: "Groove Theory" (w/Rhonda)

Welcome to Episode #11 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair revisit the debut self-titled album from R&B vocalist, Brandy.

Released on 27th September 1994 by Atlantic Records, the album was chiefly produced by Keith Crouch and reached number 20 on the US Billboard 200 becoming certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).  Worldwide, the album has sold over six million copies.

Four singles were released from the album in 'I Wanna Be Down', 'Baby', 'Best Friend' and 'Brokenhearted'.  The singles garnered Brandy nominations for various awards, including two Grammy Award nominations and the success of the album allowed the young star to establish herself as one of the most successful of the then-new generation of R&B female vocalists who emerged during the mid-to-late 1990s.

Released on 26th October 1993 by Qwest/Warner Records, the album was chiefly produced by Babyface, Prince and Narada Michael Walden.  The album sold over 2 million copies, reaching double Platinum status, and featured an incredible 6 single releases in support of the album including the biggest R&B hit of his career, 'Can We Talk'.  At only 16 years old, 'I'm Ready' is widely regarded as the high-point in Tevin's career even earning the artist 3 Grammy nominations.

Welcome to Episode #13 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair revisit Bobby Brown's, 'Bobby'.

Released 25th August 1992 through MCA Records, the album served as the third solo outing for the R&B vocalist following his departure from R&B collective New Edition.  Bobby peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 Album Chart and spawned three major US Billboard Hot 100 singles; "Humpin' Around" (US #3), "Good Enough" (US #7), and "Get Away" (US #14). The album also reached number one on the Billboard R&B Albums chart, and reached the top 10 in Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.  Brown received his second Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 35th Grammy Awards for the single "Humpin' Around" and the album was certified double platinum by the RIAA.

Released 25th March 1997 through Bad Boy Records, the album would see its release 16 days after Biggie's murder and would go on to be nominated for three Grammies and be certified Platinum in the US eleven times.  Spearheaded by the singles 'Hypnotize', 'Mo Money Mo Problems' and 'Sky's The Limit', the album would also be cited in several leading publications from Rolling Stone, The Face, Q and The Source as one of the greatest albums of all time.

This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the sophomore studio album from the R&B trio TLC, 'CrazySexyCool'.

'CrazySexyCool' is the second studio album by American girl group TLC, released on November 15, 1994, by LaFace and Arista Records. The album was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number three on the Billboard 200, where it spent over two years. It has been certified 12-times platinum by the RIAA, making TLC the first girl group in history to be awarded diamond status. 'CrazySexyCool' has since sold over 15 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by an American girl group. The album has since been featured on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and was listed as a "New Classic" by Entertainment Weekly in 2008. The album was also ranked as the seventh best diamond-certified album of all time by Billboard.

'The Day' is the fourth studio album by American R&B singer Babyface. It was released by Epic Records on October 22, 1996, in the United States. The album peaked at number 6 on the US Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, also reaching the top ten on the Dutch Albums Chart. 'The Day' was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and received Grammy Award nominations for Album of the Year and Best R&B Album respectively.

Marking the debut studio effort from Badu, the project found a home on Kedar Records and Universal Records, and was a commercial success debuting at number two on the US Billboard charts and number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The album was certified three times Platinum by the RIAA, Gold by British Phonographic Industry and Gold by the Canadian Recording Industry Association.  Serving as one of the earliest forays into what would become neo-soul, 'Baduizm' was beset with praise even earning itself a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 40th Grammy Awards.

The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. The album was released on October 7, 1997, through Virgin Records. Prior to its release, she renegotiated her contract with Virgin for US$80 million, the largest recording contract in history at that time. Its composition fuses various genres, including pop, R&B, trip hop, folk, jazz, rock and techno music. Considered to be Jackson's most mature recording, it is regarded as a template for pop artists transitioning to a darker or rebellious sound and as a precursor to the development of alternative R&B. The album was certified triple platinum by the RIAA and has sold an estimated eight million copies worldwide.

Comprised of rappers Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Mariana "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira, and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving, 'Blowout Comb' was released in 1994 on Pendulum Records, just a year after their debut 'Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space)' which garnered the trio a Grammy for their single 'Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)'

The album proved to be their final full-length effort as a collective despite the numerous tours they would subsequently unite for over the years.

Released in 1991, Dangerous is considered an artistic change for Jackson, with his music embracing more socially conscious material, and a broader range of sounds and styles - namely the introduction New Jack Swing from the project's notable inclusion of Teddy Riley. It features catchy pop hooks and choruses while also introducing underground sounds to a mainstream audience. 

Delivering a mammoth nine singles, the album is noted as being one of the best-selling of all time, receiving four Grammy nominations and being certified 8x platinum.
