i love reinforced records. some of the best hardcore jungle in the history of the genre. massive enjoyment has come to me from them records.

Where to start? Herbie Hancock is a living icon, not just in Jazz music, but also as a cultural personality. His musical cannon spans 60 years and surpasses nearly all benchmarks. In-fact, he sets the benchmarks. Delving into his discography suddenly makes one realize how incredibly versatile and prolific he is. From playing straight ahead jazz with Miles Davis in the 60’s, to constructing Headhunters (the 2nd highest selling ‘Jazz’ album of all time, after Miles’ Kind of Blue) Herbie refuses to settle into one style. The winner of more than 16 Grammys, composer of film soundtracks, collaborator with the up and coming and the trad masters; put simply Hancock is a genius. We’ve attempted to pay tribute to his astounding back catalogue by putting together a selection from our collective Hancock LPs, and even though we only touch the surface, you’ll find a fairly broad representation of his music within. There’s enough material to do another 30 of these mixes!

Themes International was a library record label founded in 1973 by Alan Parker. The music was specifically designed for television and movie scores, and was never released to the public for sale. With a catalog stretching from 1973 to 1985, Themes remains on the top list of vinyl collectors and enthusiasts around the world. This mix tape is a brief glimpse into the mysterious London based record label, and shares to the world a little taste of rare English funk. Enjoy...!!!

Dub and bonus beats mixes were the hidden treats on many '80s hip-hop 12-inch singles – tripped out tracks where re-imagined bass, drum and tape edit arrangements took center stage, and echo-drenched rap fragments floated in and out like ghostly guests. These mixes were also showcases for a generation of transcendent engineers/editors/producers – e.g. Aldo Marin, Carlos Berrios, Omar Santana, Marley Marl & others – at an early moment when hip-hop, R&B, electro and dance music comfortably comingled. Flying solo at the controls on this episode, I explore an hour of ’80s hip-hop 12-inch bonus beats and dub mixes, from the slept-on to the classic.

Across 135th Street - Cold Gettin Dub, 7.18.17

Idris Muhammad's birthday was November 13, and so I thought I'd do a tribute episode to the legendary drummer (RIP) whose sound shaped so much of jazz, soul, funk, rock and later hip-hop. I was very lucky to witness his greatness once, several years ago at the Blue Note when he was playing with Ahmad Jamal's group. So here's a few tunes - only one from his own releases, while the rest are records he played on and shaped in his own way. I tried to stay away from the well-known classics but don't worry, it's all super funky.
