i made this almost a year ago..
as a soundtrack for ayla dmyterko‘s moving-image film “on volya: filling in the frescoes”. i learnt from ayla that the concept of volya holds a meaning close to “temporary freedom”, so i was aiming for this track to feel like a release.

the cover is a close-up of the painting madeleine la veilleuse (magdelene with a smoking flame). the original artwork (if there is one) is dated back to 1640. it was attributed by authorities of representativity (french nationalists and strategic art historians) to lorraine landlord and painter george la tour, for catholic identification and poverty porn purposes. magdalene is depicted with a rope around her shameful pregnant belly; she simultaneously carries death on her lap. agency is her grip on her own mortality. i believe the shame she was made to feel is what is keeping her awake at night here, while the guilty are asleep. she feels cold and wrong so she sits too close to the flame. her role was once to be one man's public trophy and private saviour. she is now an awkward and potentially hysterical memory pushed aside to the narrators' brotherhood. brotherhood, she cannot empirically believe that it is the only form of socialisation that ultimately matters. the brothers' episodic repentance serves their good consciousness as protagonists.
