Open Question Vol. 1 — soon to be followed by a second volume—is the first of two albums that rely on stellar, warm, collective, and freely improvised music. The band formed organically in 2019 from weekly jam sessions in Harlem; it is comprised of tenor saxophonist Ayumi Ishito, pianist Eric Plaks, bassist Zach Swanson, and drummer Jon Panikkar, and later, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter. Recording an album with only free improvisation was Ishito’s long-time dream, stalled by the pandemic, and realized only this year. Open Question’s music today, while fully improvised, remains firmly rooted in the jazz tradition. This is best heard on “Synchronicity,” the last recorded piece of the session, where each musician’s trajectory diverges even as the piece holds together. On the track, Carter starts out with soprano sax then later switches to tenor toward the middle of the piece, as Carter and Ishito playfully spar with competing tenor melodies. This album marks Ayumi Ishito’s second album on 577 Records, following her widely-acclaimed Ayumi Ishito & the Spacemen Vol. 1 (2021).

"I’m supposed to be writing about Pacifica Koral Reef, this record that I’ve made with my friend Henry Kaiser and his friend Wadada Leo Smith. And while the music it contains is, for me, a miraculous late-career achievement after 50 years of mostly playing in alternative rock bands, writing about it is a downright odd thing to have to do. In my parallel life as an arts journalist, I’ve interviewed everyone from Ornette Coleman to John Cage to Robert Plant but I’ve rarely had to write about myself, and I much prefer it that way. Fighting against my natural tendency towards self-effacement is the fact that Pacifica Koral Reef is more than just a record. Yes, everybody says this about their latest slab of black plastic or their shiny new optical disc, but this time it’s true. 
Everybody says this, too, but wait.
The multidimensional experience that is Pacifica Koral Reef began life in trumpet player and composer Smith’s prodigious imagination, and then found a home on a single sheet of paper, inscribed with sinuous lines, bright blocks of spring green and earthy ochre, radiant pools of blue, circuit-board computations, and ancient glyphs. 
You could call it a painting. The University of Chicago’s Renaissance Society, which hosted an exhibition of Smith’s graphic scores in 2015, probably would.
It’s also a portal, as Kaiser and I found when we began, with Smith’s inspiration and help, to translate it into sound. Over the course of several recording sessions, made next door to a sumptuous collection of vintage ukuleles and utilizing an array of microphones made of purest Soviet unobtanium, we were transported to locales as dramatically different as a steamy Chicago nightclub, a Third Stream concert hall, the crystalline world under the Antarctic ice, and a lonely Scottish moor (with hints of a lost tanpura droning in the distance).
Tracking the Pacifica Koral Reef score took us out of familiar habits and into new terrain. It sparked music that will never be duplicated, because if we tried we’d of necessity be expressing a different moment, a different feeling. And it strengthened preexisting bonds of friendship and respect. I met Kaiser in 1978, after seeing a poster advertising a concert of “weird guitar music”, and Smith perhaps a year after that, when he led a workshop for improvisers in Vancouver. Meanwhile, Henry has collaborated with Leo on a number of projects, most notably three 2-CD sets and two single album releases with their Yo Miles! band. Henry, who has known Leo since 1976, tells me that he thinks of Wadada as the favorite and wise uncle that he never had in his own family.

Originally from Kingsport, Tennessee, New York-based Zoh Amba is a precocious, notable star in the avant-garde music scene. Growing up in the Appalachian mountains, Amba practiced saxophone to the forest that surrounded her home before she later traveled to study with David Murray in New York, and also at the San Francisco Conservatory Of Music & New England Conservatory in Boston. Today, her music is full of folk melodies, mesmerizing refrains, repeated incantations and powerfully executed Free Jazz reminiscent of Albert Ayler. Her sound is courageous and bold, commanding her instrument with a loving force that soars from muted hums to squeaky trebles, producing a confident sound imbued with spirituality. 

On this project, Zoh Amba is joined by legendary artists William Parker (Bass) and Francisco Mela (Drums), who temper her daring saxophone with a lush percussive foundation and a reassuring bassline. On one of the album’s 4 tracks, Amba also opts for flute, cutting through the noise with a quieter, adventurous tone, and offering listeners a more exclusive look at her multi-instrumental prowess. The album, O Life, O Light, Vol. 1 will be released on CD (available 5/20/22) and on black and limited color vinyl editions planned to arrive late 2022 but available for pre-order now—the vinyl editions will also include an extra bonus track. Bukas: How Karl Evangelista is Exploring the Future of Free Music with his Quintet and Special Guest, Andrew Cyrille
 
The rumors are true. Rising Filipino-American guitarist Karl Evangelista has officially teamed up with 577 Records to reveal an aural feast fit for melophile royalty.  In his first album with the label, Bukas, his quintet (Karl Evangelista’s Apura) is joined by a very special guest: drum legend Andrew Cyrille.  This thought-provoking avant-garde piece doesn't only recognize the need for a better world.  It also creates a mesmerizing platform for discovering what that could look like.
The new release’s namesake is tied to Evangelista’s roots (“Bukas” means “tomorrow” in the Filipino language Tagalog).  A slightly different pronunciation of the word translates to “open”, setting expressive freedom as the theme for the whole album.  It explores the life of experimentalism, from its origins to its purpose and function and a wondrous destiny currently being shaped by pioneers like Karl Evangelista’s Apura.
“Our project argues that Free Music is aspirational in character,” explains the California-based artist. “It liberates the performer, and in doing so, it envisions a tomorrow where all individuals are guaranteed freedom and equality. Free music may sound dissonant, intense, and overwhelming, but it is also filled with passion, complexity, and love.”
Karl Evangelista’s Apura includes bassist Lisa Mezzacappa, tenor saxist Francis Wong, Rei Scampavia on the keys and electronics, alto saxist Lewis Jordan, and the man himself on guitar. The group defies traditional free music and moves improvisation into the modern age with 21st-century sounds and techniques without sacrificing imagination.

From the soul of 577 Records comes an epic collaboration from experimental masters, pianist Matthew Putman, bassist Hill Greene, and drummer Francisco Mela (who also plays the whistle in this one).  It’s synergy like never before.  The sounds you’ll hear in Believe That Was Me could only have been achieved by this specific combination of artists, setting, and time.
Although Greene and Putman have been collaborating since 2017, this release marks the first time Mela and Putman have played together – though you’d never know it, thanks to their intense chemistry.  This extraordinary album doesn’t only gracefully bridge the gap between intense melodies and classic avant-garde energy; it takes many trips over that bridge and back to unlock an existential experience.
The musicians were shook when they first heard the playback.  They almost didn’t recognize their own enviable talents!  And in that moment, the album title was born.  Believe That Was Me isn’t just an observation; it’s a reckoning.
These three men have roots buried in the heart of the 577 Records community.  They’ve all been a part of it for over a decade (since 2009 for Putman).  Their new album was recorded at the label’s studio in Brooklyn, home of the New York Forward Fest (NYFF).  There’s no doubt that Believe That Was Me was influenced by the enchanting location and lingering high vibes of this community of musicians and their supporters.  Even the cosmic sounds of NYFF’s iconic magical piano were injected into the recording through Putman’s fingers.

Pianist, Composer, and Multi-Instrumentalist Eva Novoa Releases Second Album from Her Dynamic Trio Featuring Sax Legend Daniel Carter and Renowned Drummer Francisco Mela
Brooklyn-based pianist Eva Novoa returns with The Freedom Suite: Novoa / Carter / Mela Trio, Vol. 2 — the second radiant release from her compelling trio with saxophone icon Daniel Carter and celebrated drummer Francisco Mela. This marks Novoa’s sixth album with 577 Records.
The trio first came together live in 2021, followed by a series of performances, including appearances in Cambridge (Boston) and later at the Brooklyn edition of the NY Forward Festival.
The Freedom Suite is an homage to jazz titan Duke Ellington — particularly his masterful big band suites and legendary orchestra featuring Johnny Hodges and other luminaries who helped define an era of jazz greatness. In contrast, Novoa presents her Suite in a more intimate format: the piano trio. The album comprises twelve pieces — mostly brief — with a few extended tracks such as “#6 Free to Be Free” and “#11 Cyborgs.”
For this recording, Novoa also steps in as a vocalist on several tracks, including “#2 Mainstream Media,” “#4 Big Grande,” “#5 Global,” “#6 Free to Be Free,” “#7 Dream,” and “#11 Cyborgs.” These pieces often feature a vocal dialogue between Novoa and Mela, whose expressive, word-infused style draws from rich Cuban traditions.
“Words are powerful,” says Novoa. “They define who we are, where we come from, and who we hope to become. Without words, there is no conversation — and without conversation, there is no real sense of time, space, or connection.”
The Freedom Suite emerged from deep philosophical and creative conversations — spoken, written, and improvised — between Novoa, Carter, and Mela. In the studio, Novoa introduced printed texts that served as thematic foundations for spontaneous, in-the-moment musical interpretation. The result is an urgent and organic interplay, where instruments speak to one another in a language as fluid as it is fearless.
Standout track “Cyborgs” begins with Novoa’s percussive piano, exemplifying the trio’s dynamic, conversational energy. “Creative Destruction” features Novoa on electric harpsichord in a wild, electric exchange. While “Free to Be Free” stands out as the album’s leading single, it also captures the essence and message of the entire Suite.

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, Eva Novoa has been cultivating her distinctive voice since childhood. Now a staple of the New York creative music scene, she has performed across the globe and collaborated with some of the most adventurous voices in jazz and beyond.
The Freedom Suite will be released on October 3rd, 2025, on vinyl, CD, and digital platforms. The album features striking cover art by Novoa’s longtime friend and collaborator, acclaimed street photographer Richard Sandler — the iconic “Subway Kiss (N.Y.C. 1987).”

Ben Stapp Launches Uzmic Ro’Samg — A Visionary Solo Album for Tuba and Sousaphone
Internationally recognized tubist and composer Ben Stapp announces the release of Uzmic Ro’Samg, his first-ever album of unaccompanied tuba and sousaphone. A daring, world-building statement, the recording blends technical mastery with storytelling rooted in Stapp’s original science fiction narrative.
Stapp has long been a distinctive voice in the avant-garde and creative music scenes. He has created and recorded a full opera (Myrrha’s Red Book), led acclaimed small ensembles, and collaborated with leading improvisers including Stephen Haynes, Joe Morris, Steve Swell, and William Parker. With Uzmic Ro’Samg, he turns to the solo format, showcasing the sheer breadth of sonic possibilities within low brass while embedding the music inside a deeply imaginative conceptual framework.

Against the Jazz Police — A Radical New Album of Avant-Garde Rebellion and Afro-Cuban Metaphysics
Emerging artist Leandro Cardenas announces the release of Against the Jazz Police, a bold and genre-defying debut that challenges musical orthodoxy and invokes a fierce metaphysical and cultural critique. More than an album, Against the Jazz Police is a sonic rebellion—part ritual, part philosophical treatise, part avant-garde eruption.
Under the mythic shadow of the ceiba tree, Leandro and his ensemble conjure an Afro-rooted, anarchic sound world built on collective improvisation and ancestral invocation. Using a Dolphy-inspired instrumentation of flute, alto saxophone, and bass clarinet, the group tunnels through the locked corridors of aesthetic convention to reclaim a temporarily autonomous zone in the sonic architecture of the global avant-garde.
Positioned at the crossroads of free jazz, experimental improvisation, and Afro-diasporic ritual, the album unfolds over five sessions of intense, collaborative composition. Each movement serves as a portal into layered cultural and spiritual consciousness, drawing from the symbolic power of Yoruba deities, rural trance practices, and post-colonial resistance.
Highlights include:
	•	“Rito: What Is Endures” – A visceral, textural opening that evokes ritual chaos and Dionysian ecstasy.
	•	“Exu Interlude” – A playful, shape-shifting tribute to the trickster spirit, charged with ludic spontaneity.
	•	“Cagüeiro : In the mangrove” – A trance-driven movement across sonic landscapes, with intensely expressive motifs giving way to deep ancestral resonances.
	•	“He/She Doesn’t Speak” – A haunting solo bass clarinet improvisation invoking the oceanic deity, where language dissolves into the unspeakable.
	•	“Postlude/ Ayágguna” – A baroque, ecstatic finale ascending from earthy textures to celestial climax.
The result is a project that defies genre classification: not jazz as genre, but jazz as force. Through his debut, Cardenas situates himself in dialogue with revolutionary thinkers such as Frantz Fanon, while channeling the raw spiritual currents of Afro-Caribbean cosmology and the ungovernable spirit of avant-garde improvisation.

Leo Genovese Returns with New Album Solo Brooklyn, Live from the New York Forward Festival

Renowned pianist and composer Leo Genovese is back with a captivating new solo album, Solo Brooklyn, released on 577 Records. Recorded live at the New York Forward Festival in Brooklyn in January 2025, this six-track album continues the legacy of Genovese’s celebrated 2024 festival recording, Forward.
For over two decades, Leonardo “Leo” Genovese has traveled the globe, enchanting audiences with his cosmic, boundary-pushing music. As a core collaborator with 577 Records, he has delivered numerous acclaimed releases, and Solo Brooklyn marks another milestone in his prolific career. Fans of acoustic, minimalist, and experimental piano will find this album an essential addition to their collections.
Solo Brooklyn features abstract, dreamlike compositions that are simultaneously romantic, wild, free, and beautiful. Capturing the raw energy and spontaneity of a live performance, the album reflects Genovese’s ongoing commitment to musical exploration. The New York Forward Festival, where this recording took place, is a celebrated New York arts event, highlighting experimental music and creative innovation.
Beyond performance, Genovese is a respected mentor and leader within the festival and 577 Records communities, having guided the 2023 SOF Artist Music Residencies. Born in Venado Tuerto, Argentina, and now based in New York City, Genovese began playing piano at a young age and has since mastered multiple instruments. His adventurous approach to improvisation recently earned him a Grammy Award for Best Improvised Jazz Solo.

Legendary downtown music master Daniel Carter meets Tobias Wilner from world-renowned electronic band Blue Foundation. Featuring Wu-Tang Clan bass player Djibril Toure & drum wiz Federico Ughi. As a band, they have played a number of concerts in NYC, including the Forward Festival 2016 and 2018, and are currently promoting their debut album. This group is the ultimate mix between the classic New York sound of the avant-garde (i.e., John Coltrane & Albert Ayler) combined with electronic manipulation and production.

Although this is the first album they have released as a group, the four musicians have collaborated on different projects for years. The group was first formed when drummer Federico Ughi envisioned an ensemble comprised of some of his favorite super talented people. This includes Daniel Carter, who Federico first met in 2001. The two quickly developed a strong playing partnership, going on to create many albums and tours around the world and eventually founding 577 Records and the Forward Festival together. Federico plays drums in Tobias Wilner’s group Blue Foundation, renowned for its Hollywood movie soundtracks such as the vampire series Twilight in addition to Miami Vice and a busy world tour schedule. Federico also plays with Djibril Toure in the group Major Taylor, one of the best punk rock bands to come out of Bedstuy, Brooklyn in the last 10 years. Djibril plays regularly with GZA, a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan and he’s the bass player featured on a selection of Wu-Tangs legendary albums.

To make this recording, New York United entered the studio without any preconceived plans or written music. They improvised brand new sounds on the spot that were later produced and molded by Tobias Wilner. The result is four strong and dreamy tracks that showcase the rich sound of the acoustic instruments alongside the power of the electronic beats. This project is being released as a limited edition 12’’ vinyl album plus one bonus track for the digital version.

The first single from Coultrain’s forthcoming album, Phantasmagoria, “The Pact” is a representative commitment to one’s self, an “understanding that true freedom is only found within.” Delivered with honeyed vocals, simple guitar riffs, and shifting keys, the track is an unassuming homage to self-love and self-understanding. The curiosity and creativity that drive Frison’s projects, are exemplified in this song’s introspective orientation, striking a balance between explanation and mystery.

Coultrain’s Phantasmagoria is firmly embedded in the Soul tradition, built on muted keyboards and overlaid with his assured, smooth voice—but departs with re-worked percussion and fresh, electronic experimentation. The title refers to a sequence of images reminiscent of a dream, and captures the hazy state of mind that drove the process behind this album, as well as its dreamy effect. A.M. Frison, the poet-filmmaker-musician behind the one-man band Coultrain, explores his innermost self through these compositions, drawing from the wide variety of musical influences that have shaped his creative sensibility who he describes as “the illustrious composers of jazz, the soul singers who own 'soul' in itself, the funk that resonates in dark times.” Phantasmagoria, a masterful interpretation of Frison’s most influential genres and his own introspective reflection, is avant soul at its best. The Brooklyn-based noise-jazz violinist Sana Nagano often finds herself at the center of the storm. About ‘Jackie Smiles Craft A’ Single from LP 'SIGNS REMIXED'

Inspired by the people closest to him, Gerald Cleaver said that his track, ‘Jackie’s Smiles’ was written as an ode to Jackie, “It’s for my sister. She’s a very warm person, and it’s a happy song.” Cleaver’s original song is infused with a recurring optimistic central melody, Jackie’s smile, seeming to radiate throughout the track, splintering through sonic reverb, shadowy reverberation and spacey musical architecture. In Hprizm’s rework, available on his full album of remixes, the title is altered to include “Craft A,” and the sound grows even more expansive, bringing Jackie’s smile towards an atmospheric unknown. Hprizim’s full album reworking Gerald Cleaver’s acclaimed Signs will be available in LP, CD and digital format this year on 577 Records’ experimental, electronic sub-label Positive Elevation.

About The Album ’Signs Remixed’ due June 18th

In this album, legendary New York electronic music producer Hprizm (Antipop Consortium), also known as High Priest, reworks Gerald Cleaver’s acclaimed ’Signs’ (577 Records, 2020). Throughout, Hprizm expands the sonic boundaries of the original work through dream-like, transcendent electronic manipulations. Hprizm’s album is an innovative rework of Gerald Cleaver’s debut electronic project, building off of Cleaver’s long career as an accomplished Jazz percussionist. Born and raised in Detroit, Cleaver was influenced by both traditional jazz percussion and the Motor City’s electronic music scene. Both artists were inspired by forward-thinking electronic arrangement, and reinterpretation, first reimagining jazz and then reworking electronica, offering an inventive, complex and spacey album. Released on 577 Records’ experimental, electronic sub-label Positive Elevation, 'Signs Remixed' will be available in LP, CD and digital format on June 18th, 2021.

Dave Tucker says that he brought this disparate group of musicians together for a live performance at London’s Cafe Oto last March on “an educated guess,” predicting that the artists—Mark Sanders (Drums & Percussion), Pat Thomas (Piano & Keys) Dave Tucker (Guitar) and Thurston Moore (Guitar)—would be able to create something extraordinary through improvisation. The condition of their encounter would later become the collective’s name, an “Educated Guess” and the eponymous title of their first release, the first installment of a two-part volume. The album is another experiment in chance: an eclectic composition of spontaneous performance, layering guitars over complex, sometimes-scattered drum arrangements, and punctuating the noise with distinctive electronic manipulation. Demonstrating their different backgrounds, UK improvised music heroes Thomas and Sanders, already on a few 577 Records’ releases, join forces with UK-based guitarist Tucker (a longtime collaborator with The Fall, Dudu Pukwana, Louis Moholo) and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth to create something deeply inventive and experimental, pushing the boundary of noise music towards a complicated, dissonant electronica. The album, released online and on vinyl, will be available on April 2nd, 2021.

577 Records is proud to be celebrating its 24 year anniversary.  The legendary music master Daniel Carter was one of the first people 577 cofounder Federico Ughi met soon after arriving in New York from Italy in 2000, after a brief stint in London.  It was a meeting of like minds and shortly thereafter the two started a series of house concerts at 577 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, the apartment where Federico was living at the time. The spontaneous nature of the concerts along with the incredible caliber of the deep downtown underground music they were able to present inspired them to bring the unique nature of what they were doing to a wider audience and they founded the label 577 Records to further that mission. 

577 Records started the New York Forward Festival in 2015 to mark the momentous occasion of Daniel Carter’s 70th birthday, now with festival editions happening in Morocco and Italy as well, and the international residency program Sounds of Freedom, in which active musicians are awarded the opportunity to develop their own sound, skills, and improvisation concept.

100% of profit from the sale of most of these albums goes to the musicians.
