Please meet London based DJ and producer, former Cafe Del Mar resident, and our long time close friend Phil Mison (@cantomamusic). Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hi Phil, many know you as one of the DJ's who has played all the best sunset spots across the globe. How did your summer look this year, still been scoring sunsets here and there?

PM: My summer was great. I travelled to Amsterdam, Cork, Copenhagen and Barcelona and had some nice gigs in the UK. My friend Deke has opened a bar on the seafront in Margate, you get pretty epic sunsets down there. I played a few records one evening and managed to fit in a few old cafe classics as the sun disappeared into the sea. 

MFM: Please tell us a bit about how it all started for you?

PM: I grew up in the 70’s, so there were quite a few different influences. David Bowie ‘Life On Mars’ was an early memory, and I was obsessed with Blondie. Parallel lines was the first album I bought. Later it was Northern Soul, Electro, nothing really that mellow! In 87 I met a couple of people who were really into House. I started going to groove records in soho to buy records like Adonis - No Way Back, Ten City - Devotion. Then as 88 rolled around I got into the more Balearic side of things. Later in 89 I’d pop into Reckless Records for second hand stuff and started to browse the New Age section where I got things like Kitaro  ‘Tunhuang’ and Paul Greaver ‘Joy’. Those records were the starting point really. 

MFM: DJing in clubs to make people dance never really attracted you?

PM: I’d say pretty much most of my DJing has been in clubs. I started at the Milk Bar in Soho in 1992 after giving Darren Emerson a tape. Even though I was doing the warm up and playing mellow stuff at the beginning, you had to build it up to a full dance floor by the end. In 1996 and 2000 I was the tour DJ for Lefttfield, playing in front of 1000 odd people. ‘Just get it going before we come on!’ Alongside Ross Allen and Rob Da Bank, I was resident at Bar Rhumba for our Next Level night in 1997. It lasted a year and we opened with Harvey and closed with Andrew Weatherall. I Have to mention Moonboots and Jason Boardman’s night Aficionado too. I always enjoyed playing to a dancefloor there, they’ve kept the Balearic flag flying since 1998. 

MFM: At what point did you got into making music on your own? 

PM: I’d worked on a project for Kenneth Bager in 1994. Then later on he started his Music For Dreams Label, and asked me if I would be interested in making an album.  So the first Cantoma album was started in Copenhagen in 1999, and finished in London in 2003. 

MFM: How do you come up with a new song, is there a certain Phil Mison way to it? Do you write the parts for the musicians?

PM: It usually starts with an idea that pops into my head. Sometimes a memory or travelling will get a melody going, and I’ll sometimes hum it into my phone and use that as a starting point. Ive worked with Engineer/Producer Robin Twelftree on all the Cantoma albums. I’ll go into Robin’s studio and usually start with some basic keyboards, then I’ll play a bassline in. I’ll take the demos away and think about what would work on the tracks. For some musicians the music is written down. Ive worked with Robin Lee from Faze Action on a few Cantoma tunes, and he usually transcribes my basic melodies onto sheet music. Other times I’ll play the melodies on a keyboard or hum the tunes for the musicians to follow along to. On some tracks I’ll write the lyrics too and get a singer to record on a track. There’s a lot of going back and forth until I’m happy with the final cut. The music rarely ends up sounding like the first version.

MFM: Making a mix must have been a piece of cake for you :) What is this mix like?

PM: I went back through my 92-94 selection and picked a selection of the lesser played records. Memories of magic times at the Milk Bar and warm summer evenings at the Cafe del mar.

This sound system haunted our dreams, since they packed it up at Swan Wharf. Came with high hopes and open minds for our first Sunday at the Hackney Wick Baths. What started as a soulful afternoon selection escalated slowly into a rolling dance. A few asked since if it was recorded and - luckily - this time we got the sucker.

Blended with *ahem* human touch on 2 modified Technics and an ISO420 mixer, deeper into the night than we’d expected, under the shimmers of their famous mirrorball.

Andres Astorga, aka ”Trujillo", aka "the Venezuelan don", feels most at home in the cosmic Caribe. The monthly mixes he put out from 2009 - 2016 are legendary and he has a real good feeling for finding that special record everyone will be after. (See Johnny Lamas if you need convincing). 

For "5918mins.", the don is dimming the light a little bit, slicking back his hair and showing us his sensual side. Hope you enjoy the ride.

Parisian collector Emile Omar is first and foremost known for his 15 year-long outstanding work as curator of the legendary Radio Nova. Since then, he has released 26 "Nova Tunes" compilations, 6 boxsets, and several releases on his homegrown "Fanon Records" - cumulating in just short of 2400 licensed tracks.

No wonder that we got tipped off about this guy by the man Hans Reuschel himself (who did an earlier mix for us). If Hans is the loving German mother of the renewed interest in Europe for Haïtian & Francophone Caribbean music (like Kompa & Zouk), then Emile is very much its strict father. (Maybe the other way round - you get the point).

Like Hans, however, Emile surprises in this mix with a very different selection of, as he called it: "musique lamaison".

Julian is one of three people behind the Austrian label "Edition Hawara", focused on re-issuing Fusion, Jazz-Funk and Soul from their home country. "Music from the past that sounds like the future", as they say and the long awaited re-issue of *that* Zenit album was certainly a fulminant start.

Julian himself actually uploaded the song which made this LP so sought after to Youtube, making it somewhat his discovery. Even though the term can be difficult in music and should be used with caution - it certainly seems to apply here.

Julian's own approach comes from a very humble perspective with a strong sense for that calm, soulful beauty so apparent in Zenit's "Waitin'". This is also brought out strongly in the present mix and we are more than happy to present Julian here on 5918mins. Take a calm hour of the day for this, and we're sure it will touch you just like it did to us.

Jita Sensation are Antonin and Aymard from Paris. As part of Bruits Des La Passion, they have been forming the Parisian underground for a while now with killer parties, cutting edge artwork and the necessary bit of humor. We're very happy they have provided us with some of their signature down-tempo sound that makes their sets so special.

This mix is a two-part introduction to the mind of Armin Schmelz. On a technical side, Armin’s way of tying together songs is of course flawless and quick. It seems almost as if he dances with the songs, cherishing and worshipping every single one as long as he deems enough – which makes his mixes incredibly exciting to listen to. Armin’s mind is also a world that we find fascinating and exciting, however, a world that has no rules or pre-conceptions and that we would like to say something more about. 

Being open-minded means taking other peoples’ views as seriously as your own, it means understanding everyone’s justification in shaping their existence, being open to the developments around you and to refrain from locking down your views as gospel truth. Most people are narrow-minded, some people are less narrow-minded, and the mind of a certain Armin Schmelz from Vienna seems to have virtually no boundaries at all. 

Another all-right Austrian, Ludwig Wittgenstein, believes that such a mind has understood the metaphysics of our world. We on our behalf, W thinks, should accordingly come to see that this person “waxes and wanes as a whole”, together with the worldly boundaries around them. This should mean somewhat of a simultaneous dissolution and fulfilment of the “ego” in terms of being everything and nothing - something that is most likely also felt and experienced by the person; and so should be apparent in their creative output. On this note, two maybe corresponding experiences that we have when we listen to Armin’s mixes could be mentioned.

First, it sometimes feels as if the “essence” of his creation is not in the individual tracks, nor in the way they progress, but in tying them together on some non-understood level, representing some distant picture, that cannot be expressed in words but only approached through the title that he gives them. In these moments, it feels like skipping through a certain mix of his with that description in mind has just as much of a continuity as listening to them properly. Every second is completely entrenched in this abstract picture and the technical precision of his mixing makes it easy to perceive everything as one. Here the two movements in which Mr. Schmelz presents his opus should give you two distinct pictures for direct comparison. In other moments, however, it seems completely wrong to over-intellectualize his music. Then, Armin’s mixes present themselves as funfairs, or a circus, best to be enjoyed with cotton candy and naïve childrens’ eyes.
