soon they stumbled upon a place that both of them had not yet seen before
and so both of them got cold feet

then they tightly held each other's hands; tried scampering away desperately

A yearly winter getaway

The Pacific Golden Plover is a migratory shorebird which breeds in the summer in the northern regions of Russia and Alaska, and travels south across various locations throughout the Pacific in winter to roost. In Singapore, they usually arrive starting in late August and can be found in undisturbed coastal regions such as Sungei Buloh and its surrounding mudflats.

Birds from the Void Deck II

Pluvialis fulva

Yellow-vented Bulbuls are the most common urban species of bulbul in Southeast Asia. Their name comes from the yellow patch of feathers on their [funny area I will not mention :) ]. They often forage around in parks and gardens here in Singapore, where you'll probably hear their distinctly 'bubbly' calls. Small lil guys.

Pycnonotus goiavier

The Eurasian Tree Sparrow (P. montanus) is a widespread bird across Europe and Asia. They are gregarious (social; in flocks), and frequent places associated with human activity. You'll recognise them as the tiny brown flighty birds that forage around coffee shops here.

In Singapore, there're two species of sparrow (family Passer). The other is the much-less common House Sparrow (P. domesticus) which has its local population seemingly restricted to the oil refineries of Jurong Island. It's a mystery from where this population originated. Contrastingly, P. domesticus' worldwide range is actually much wider than P. montanus, and is probably the sparrow you're thinking of if you're in the Western world, particularly the Americas. P. domesticus displays sexual dimorphism (where both sexes look different), whereas P. montanus doesn't.

Striated herons are a rather widespread species. Fitting the alternate name, their small size makes them distinct from many herons - but you'll find them in the same places, around bodies of water, feeding on stuff like fishes and crustaceans. Stealthily, they station themselves along the water edge, waiting still, before ambushing their prey.

Taxonomists ascribe several subspecies to B. striata, with the Singaporean one being javanica. Usually, this narrower categorisation happens because the subspecies don't interbreed with each other, or/and they are morphologically distinct enough (i.e., they appear significantly different). Differentiating species more narrowly like this can, for example, allow for more targeted conservation efforts. Since these sub-groups are smaller, the individual members share more traits, so it's easier to decide on what actions to take to help them effectively.

Butorides striata javanica

Hirundo javanica - the 'Javan Swallow'
(formally grouped together with other spp. as "H. tahitica")

oh, to soar gracefully in the wind (and have yummy bugs)

Swallows belong to a family of birds that've found niches in aerial feeding -- that's capturing and consuming prey while in flight -- usually on insects flying around in the air. Owing to this, species across the family evolved a unique and pretty cool aerodynamic shape, allowing them to efficiently fly at high speeds. Other birds in this family (Hirundininae) include swifts, martins and saw-wings.

Swallows themselves are also famous for their cup-shaped nests made of mud which they build under ledges of cliffs. Though nowadays in urban environments, they've found nesting under roofs, bridges and other man-made hollow structures to be fine too. These nests aren't the edible ones used in Bird's Nest (燕窝) soup/drinks, although they use the same Chinese word "燕 (yàn)". Those use the nests of swiftlets instead (also in the Hirundininae).

As for pacific swallows, they're the most common swallow species in Singapore, appearing all over the country whenever some insects decide to congregate in the air. The rest of our swallows are migratory visitors. One of them is the barn swallow, which looks very similar, but has a blue band around its chest. While they may have a striking red face and throat, from far away (which is where you'll usually be looking at them), it's hard to tell them apart from other aerial feeders. One piece of advice the Bird Society of Singapore gives is that swallow species fold their wings back in flight.

Hirundo javanica

Pitta megarnhyncha - the 'Large-beaked Little-bird'

Mangrove Pittas are a near-threatened species of pitta specialised to mangrove habitats, and also the only resident pitta in Singapore. Lok et al. (2009) cite it as being extinct on the main island though over recent years infrequent sightings of it have been made. Their shy nature doesn't help either; it makes them very hard to observe. The population is now largely restricted to offshore islands Pulau Ubin (which is largely designated as a nature park) and Pulau Tekong (which is reserved for military use). Because the majority of Singapore's original mangrove landscape has been reclaimed (and still is being reclaimed), the stability of the current population is very much at risk. Outside the country, logging for mangrove timber and urban development of coastal land also pose threats to these birds' futures.

The genus name Pitta is a Telugu word meaning "little (bird)", and the species name comes from ancient Greek words meaning "large beak", that which it uses to crush crustacean prey. Its diet also consists of other animals from snails to small frogs. The bulkier beak also helps distinguish it from similar-looking species like the more common (non-resident) Blue-winged Pitta (P. moluccensis). Their calls are a very prominent whistle-like "wi↑e↓uw-wi↑e↓uw!" which cuts through the dense mangrove environment -- males make this call to mark territory.
