In July 2005, 5 Magazine began appearing at festivals, in shops and in clubs all around Chicago with a mission of bringing the unstoppable power of underground house music to every part of the city and every corner of the world.

Twenty years later, we're celebrating with our first vinyl-only release. WITH LOVE features three foundational Chicago house music artists — Mike Dunn, Roy Davis Jr. and Jamie 3:26 & Danou P. — who are vital figures in both its history and in providing the energy and music that pushes the scene forward into the future.

WITH LOVE also features bespoke cover art — a collage made up of almost 100 photos from 5 Mag's archives, spanning 20 years of the people, places and parties that make up the Chicago house music scene. Look closely and you'll definitely see someone you know. You may even see yourself!

The first 100 copies are pressed on pink vinyl and sold on a first-come first-serve basis!

5 Mag launches a new mix series today, with a set from our friend Rissa Garcia.

RISE is a weekly mix series, posted every Monday and featuring DJs from all genres that we cover. Not too long ago, 5 Mag used to do another weekly mix series debuting every Monday, and it seemed like it set things off in a good way - a good start to the work week and something to get you through. Words like "uplifting" and "motivating" mean different things to different people, but we hope the music brings something positive to you.

@rissa Garcia was one of those original 5 Mag Monday DJs, and is someone whose career and love of music has continued to shine. Based in NYC, Rissa is the Dancing Room Only resident DJ, a producer and founder of NightChild Records. She's shared the decks with legends Danny Tenaglia, Danny Krivit, Todd Terry, Tony Humphries, Chez Damier and Ultra Nate; she'll be playing with several more at the "LGNDS" event this December 17 2022 with Boris, Kenny Dope, Mark Knight and Oscar G.

5 Mag's new mix series RISE returns with this week's set from Dublin-based DJ Glenn Davis @gsoul

Glenn Davis is a DJ and producer praised in these pages and others for his incredibly vibrant deep house tracks on labels including F*CLR, Yore, D1, LDF and A Deeper Groove. We premiered one of his tracks from his Better Daze EP on Yore a few months ago. 

Davis has a track coming soon on a forthcoming Local Talk compilation and a record on a new Berlin label called Ascension on Wax — the latter featuring "a remix from one of my favorite producers Mark Hand." Also in the pipe are remixes for DJ/producer Craig Smith and DJ Gratts.

Apartment Records' Kenny Hanlon is the DJ for this week's featured mix for 5 Mag's RISE series.

Kenny Hanlon is a long term "get" for me personally as I've been a crazy fanboy of both the music on his label and the way he runs it. Hanlon runs @apartment-records which released one of my favorite records of 2022, Being's There, available on digital and cassette via Bandcamp. Come to think of it, Apartment also released one of my favorite records of 2021, NCW on NCW. Their next release (and thus potentially my favorite record next year) will be from New Jackson, coming out in early 2023.

In addition to running Apartment Hanlon is one of the organizers of the Open Ear festival in Sherkin Island, Cork, Ireland.

This week's RISE mix comes via @djdeeka head honcho at strictlyundergroundmusic.com and A&R at @strictlyum — "my very first label and love." He also co-hosted The Housing Project Radio Show on New Zealand's legendary underground radio station RadioActive.fm from 2012 to 2016.

DJ Deeka - RISE vol 4

@rhythmrobot is the alias of Chicago producer Ryan Gilhooley, specializing in the styles of Acid, Techno and Deep House. Making tracks since the early 2000s under the name "Hardware," Ryan took a break between 2009-2015 to focus on his marketing career. For therapeutic reasons, he started producing tracks again in 2015 as rhythmrobot. In 2016, Ante Recordings put out his first label release, "Drum Hop," followed by Owen Ni aka Pan!k, who put out his second EP,  "Chapdr3" on Run on Recordings. Since then, Owen and Ryan have teamed up on a number of projects. Together, they have released music on Ante Recordings, Snail Juice Records, Bang Le Dex, Run on Trax and AcidWorx. 

The highlight of rhythmrobot's music career came when Posthuman played his track "Urges" at I Love Acid in October 2020. In early 2021, rhythmrobot collaborated with Owen Ni on the "Crate Diggin'/Rung" EP. "Rung" was picked up by multiple Spotify editorial playlists which allowed their music to be heard in 138 different countries that year. To date, rhythmrobot's music has been remixed by dyLAB, Owen Ni/Pan!k, Raytek, Master Master, Yokushe, JAK, Distortion Inc., Pat Foosheen and Mark Ryal.

Anna Schreit @anna-maria-schreit was born and raised in Berlin, into a family of a musician who exposed her to a diverse range of music genres from a very young age. Her father's art rock band was one of her earliest influences, shaping her understanding of music and its various forms. 

Despite living in a beloved techno city in Europe, it was actually during a trip to Munich that Anna was introduced to the world of electronic music. It was here that she discovered the exotic sounds of house music, which proved to be a turning point for her musical journey. After falling in love with the endless possibilities of house music, Anna began DJing in 2012 to share the tracks she had collected and built up over the years. Her goal was to create immersive experiences and take her listeners on unique journeys through her sets. 

Anna Schreit's latest release is Duck EP, her first for the legendary Compost Records — a "warm and funky soulful three track" EP, each of which are dedicated to one of the three bookers at Berlin's Sisyphos where Anna is one of the club's valued regular DJs:

Anna Schreit mix ☀️ RISE vol 23

We've been searching for a proper way to post all this stuff from 5 Mag's 18 years of history that slipped through the cracks. This series, SYNC, is our way to revisit that history in a respectful way and not just dump a bunch of content back on the internet without context. We could think of  no better way to start than with this lost mix from the great Paul Johnson.

There was never a time that we asked Paul Johnson for a favor and he turned us away. You could hit him up at 5am for a mix, an interview, a booking, a DJ chart, a free track or to sit for several hours for a video interview, as he did for our 5 year anniversary project. He was usually still up, and he almost always complied. He wasn't just a brilliant artist &mdash; maybe the best house music DJ and creator that Chicago ever produced. The guy gave of himself and his time like no one else. 

This was not an original 5 Mag mix. Paul used to post mixes to SoundCloud almost weekly and delete them when they reached 100 downloads. This one he called "Jive Turkey," and it was posted just prior to Thanksgiving weekend in 2012. We embedded this mix for a shortlived feature called "ChicagoCast," highlighting new mixes from figures in the Chicago house scene. Paul later deleted it, and when I asked about it he sent it over for us to repost. It seems to have fallen completely off the map since then; according to Google it's not available anywhere and this might be the only copy, or at least the only one we could find.

SYNC: Paul Johnson - Jive Turkey (2012)

Rick Wade is one of those electronic music producers who deserves the honorific title of "maestro." Listening to his music unlocks vibes, sensations, triggered by a deep knowledge of music that is impossible to reproduce without doing the work. The same, I think, goes for his DJ sets. 

This mix series, Sanctify, was created with a sound like Rick Wade's in mind: warm, analog-sounding deep house. "Late Night Basix" could be an alternate title. Though we started with others, Rick Wade drew the blueprint for this.

5 Mag Cover Mix ⚡️ Rick Wade - Sanctify vol 10

Fouk are a Dutch deep house duo with records on Heist, Shall Not Fade, Razor'N'Tape and many more. Their own label, Outplay, is one of the real secret gems in the scene, with a small but tight discography, every release being distinct from the others and absolutely essential. 

In addition to this issue's cover feature, @justsayfouk also put together this mix for our Sanctify deep house series.

"It's full of tracks we've been digging lately," the duo says "It starts out a bit slower, nice and melodic flowing into disco-fied and full on house music upping the tempo along the way!

Chicago DJ and producer Elbert Phillips pays tribute to the late, legendary Frankie Knuckles with this extended and thoroughly dope classic tribute mix.

This is also an intensely personal mix — @elbert-struthers-phillips was both a fan and a confidant of Frankie Knuckles, one of a small handful of DJs handpicked by FK to open for him at his own events and selected shows. He also released a sensational cover of the Frankie Knuckles and Robert Owens classic “Tears” that 5 Mag covered last year.

This mix is “a retrospective of his career from his residency at the Warehouse to selections that I think he would appreciate today,” Elbert says.

“Two selections from the playlist (Din Jay’s ‘Cosmic Lust’ & Pat Bedeau’s ‘My Life’ aren’t classics, but they remind me of Frankie. Chris Forkis’s ‘Beats & Jembe’ is just a dope track that made sense with the others! Souldynamic’s ‘Too Hot For Love’ is def a classic tune but it’s got a heavier foot and edits.”

Elbert Phillips: A Frankie Knuckles Classics Tribute

Wake up it's time for a new deep & heady set from LUKUMIPEOPLE for 5 Mag's RISE series

LUKUMIPEOPLE (Aphrosoul Lukumi People) (LUKUMIPEOPLE MUSIC, YORUBA RECORDS, MOJÙGBÁ BKNY, WPFW 89.3FM, EATON RADIO, BLAST RADIO) is a musical, cultural, and spiritual polymath. 

In addition to being a captivating DJ, he is a spiritual conduit, plant- based yogi, Usui/Tibetan Reiki master teacher, and founder of Lukumi People Music & Oracle Bohemian Artifacts. 

LUKUMIPEOPLE has been in the music scene for more than half his life. He has worked as a club security doorman, promotor, dancer, and radio personality. 

His deep-house DJ sets can be best described as “Ancient Future Soul Music.”

LUKUMIPEOPLE mix: RISE vol 32

A pillar of the West Coast and American dance music scenes, Galen perfected his skills in the ’90s on long and eclectic DJ sets at renegade & warehouse parties.

First among them: his own Sunset Sound System events, a DIY happening in which he played adventurous sets every Sunday in a park framed by the setting sun, the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge.

With some friends in common, we’ve been meaning to interview Galen for years, and took the opportunity presented by the release of his new Magic Bus EP, out May 9 on Justin Martin’s What To Do label. We’re honored to share this new cover mix as well, which Galen made exclusively for 5 Mag.

In July 2005, 5 Magazine began appearing at festivals, in shops and in clubs all around Chicago with a mission of bringing the unstoppable power of underground house music to every part of the city and every corner of the world.

Twenty years later, we're celebrating with our first vinyl-only release. WITH LOVE features three foundational Chicago house music artists — Mike Dunn, Roy Davis Jr. and Jamie 3:26 & Danou P. — who are vital figures in both its history and in providing the energy and music that pushes the scene forward into the future.

WITH LOVE also features bespoke cover art — a collage made up of almost 100 photos from 5 Mag's archives, spanning 20 years of the people, places and parties that make up the Chicago house music scene. Look closely and you'll definitely see someone you know. You may even see yourself!

The first 100 copies are pressed on pink vinyl and sold on a first-come first-serve basis!

She currently hosts the Vintage House radio program and podcast and is a member of the Good Girls DJ collective along with Hanna Viti, aka Vitigrrl, and Darlene Jackson, aka DJ Lady D.

Quicktastic mix - 5 Mag RISE vol 37

Ultra rare sounds in a lost mix from one of the greatest DJs in the world. Paul Johnson mixing electro, synth and '80s classics in a unique throwback mix called RETROJACKTIVE.

Where This Mix Came From:
For a time, Paul Johnson was posting mixes to SoundCloud almost weekly and would delete them when they reached 100 downloads. I was one of the 100. Sometimes people re-uploaded them on SoundCloud or Mixcloud. But looking back through 5 Mag's archives, I found this mix again and realized that not only had it disappeared from the internet, but even the word "retrojacktive" turned up 0 search results. This might be the only copy of a very rare side of Paul Johnson. 

We have about three or four other mixes like this — either vanished from the internet or available in very restricted formats.
