Dra Da Jamchey – A Story of Three Generations of Love

Long ago, in a quiet monastery tucked within the mountains, lived Dalo Alo Penjo and Goensa Lham. They were inseparable—best friends who slowly discovered a love that went beyond friendship. Yet, bound by vows and the weight of society, they could not be together. With heavy hearts, they prayed earnestly that in their next life, they might be born as man and woman, free to love without restraint.

Their prayers were answered.

In their second life, they were reborn—Dalo Penjo as a humble, poor boy, and Goensa Lham as the daughter of a wealthy family. Though their worlds were divided by class, fate brought them together as cowherds. Slowly, memories of their past life returned, and so did their love. But once again, obstacles stood in their way.

Goensa Lham’s father disapproved of Dalo Penjo, seeing him as unworthy of their family’s name and status. Determined to separate them, he conspired with his brother to end Dalo Penjo’s life. One fateful night, Dalo Penjo secretly visited Goensa Lham. Hearing of her father’s cruel plan, she begged Dalo to swap clothes with her and escape. At dawn, in the dim light of the blue hour, Dalo slipped away dressed in her kira. Mistaking him for his daughter, the family let him go.

But Goensa Lham, now disguised in Dalo Penjo’s gho, met a tragic fate. Believing her to be the young man they despised, her own father and uncle struck her down. She sacrificed her life so that Dalo Penjo might live.

Years passed, and in their third life, the story took a different turn. Dalo Penjo, scarred by love and loss, devoted himself to a spiritual path. He became a wandering hermit, living in retreat, seeking peace through prayer and religious practice.

It was then that fate brought him once more to Goensa Lham—this time as a young village girl. When they met, recognition sparked instantly, and joy filled their hearts. Yet, life’s cruel timing had returned: she was young, and he had grown old. With tenderness in his eyes, Dalo Penjo told her,

“We cannot walk this path together. You are young, with a life ahead of you. I have chosen the way of religion, for in this devotion, both of us will find peace.”

With tears and smiles, they parted once again—bound by love, yet separated by the hand of destiny.
