Hola and bonjour! Today's mix was specially recorded for us by Nico Jean, a musician, DJ and producer of Mexican-French origin (how do you like this combination, huh?), whose name alone makes the most advanced party-goers in Mexico City gently wiggle their hips.

A little bird whispered in our ears that Niko has his own label @colectivomiramar, which we love so much by the previous name Casa Disco (Niko, why did you change it?), and he draws inspiration from the exotic sound of the music from the most unexpected corners of the world and melodies found on rare vintage vinyl.

To get in the right mood for listening to Nico Jean's mix we strongly recommend you get into your sexiest pants or your most unbridled shirt, learn a couple of saucy phrases in Spanish or French, and master your hypnotized snake moves.

Кстати, о Данииле! Готовьтесь загибать пальцы: он записывает миксы, в которых каким-то невообразимым образом «сшивает» друг с другом неоклассику и полиритмическую дьявольщину, сочиняет собственную музыку, а ещё и является одним из основателей объединения Alt, славящегося своими тусовками с экспериментальной электроникой музыкой.

You fall asleep on the open deck of the ferry to the Kadıköy pier. All fades away in blackness separating reality from the world of dreams: Seryozha, your children, a simit in a plastic bag, and a sore knee due to the endless climbing uphill on the Buyukada island. You suddenly turned into a mackerel trying to escape from the strong hands of an elderly fisherman on the Galata Bridge. He carries your shiny little body to a dirty plastic bucket with a missing handle. It's getting really scary, but that feeling suddenly goes away as soon as you hear Süheyla's mix for 5/8: radio playing from a car passing over the bridge. You look at the minarets, the setting sun, the water surface of the Bosphorus, tourists passing by, pinching their noses in disgust, and humility spreads over every squama with the thought that the beauty of your whole fish life is hidden in its transience.

Today's mix was made for us by Süheyla, an aspiring DJ from Istanbul, whose love of combining disco with trance and tribal motifs with downtempo makes not only the audience at home shake their hips, but has already won the hearts of the people from Berlin.

You pull out a 1992 calendar with the Bulgarian football club «Etar», a postcard with the Riga TV tower sent to you by a person whose bare buttocks you sometimes remember, then you’ll pull out a bitter resentment for the fact that in the eighth grade no one called you to dance at school disco, and a dusty mix of Krjuk for 5/8: the radio which you turn on whenever you want to imagine yourself as a tanned resident of a sanatorium in Gagra.

Today's mix is a guaranteed way to immerse yourself in sweet languor, even if you go for a beer to the local bottle shop in Lytkarino. We want to thank Alexey Kryuk, musician, DJ and a member of the Soft Metal band, for taking the time to find this treasure among his countless archival creations

To rejoice, having turned Tijani Babangida, who scored the single goal into the gates of the hated Danes on a hot June evening in 1998.

Serafima tightly squeezed the hand of Leonid Borisovich. It almost instantly became wet either from the August heat, or from the excitement of the moment. Looking at the pond, which reflected a twelve-story panel building called the "candle" by the locals, she asked: "Lenya, would you also want all of this to last forever?".

At first Leonid Borisovich wanted to nod as a sign of agreement, but then he remembered everything that he could not really accept the finiteness of: like a trip to the nudist beach "Little Banana" on the island of Skiathos which was full of surprises, or the promising career of Stefan Bellof, which was ended with a crash into a concrete wall in Belgium, but above all of this – the mix of Istanbul rhythm-caster Ali Riza Firat, created for 5/8: radio.

Tonya was twelve years old. On the small screen of the «Toshiba» color TV were corrugated potato chip floating in zero gravity, news anchor Ken Brockman went nuts and welcoming a race of giant ants to Earth, and a drunken Barney Gumble flew off on a jetpack stolen from NASA with a bottle of champagne in his hand. Glasses clinked in the kitchen. Father received a prepayment and brought Turkish sweets with marmalade inside. Mother opened a bottle of champagne and thickly painted her lips with the lipstick bought in Bulgaria last summer. Outside the window, in the dim light of the loneliest street lamp, there were falling large flakes of January’s snow.

Tonya somehow felt surprisingly good, but she had no idea that she would feel just as good only after 23 years, when she decided to turn on the Safronel mix for the 5/8: a radio, inspired by the «Deep Space Homer» episode, in which Homer Simpson goes to space.

Mikhail Alexandrovich opened his eyes with an effort. During the night his apartment became so cold that his face felt like a heavy ice mask. The smell of rain and rotting leaves wafted into the bedroom from the open window.

Everything inside Mikhail Alexandrovich crumpled because of the mere thought that he would have to get out of bed in all this September nightmare. He imagined his cold hands, puddle-stained boots, a terribly prickly sweater, and smoking breaks under the drizzle. It was too much.

The only thing that gave Mikhail Alexandrovich strength to finally pull his shaking pale body out from the blanket was not the prospect of being under boiling water in the shower, not a cup of hot instant coffee, and not even a trip to Tunisian Sousse bought for October. It was the 200th anniversary mix from 5/8: radio, recorded by Sasha Shuliko, warming like the July sun

The reality around you suddenly turns into a beach bar called «Carousel». It smells of cypress, charcoal fish and cheap cigarettes. The lights are dancing on the sea surface. The dance floor is sticky because of all the alcohol spilled overnight. There are only you and a hugging drunk couple dancing there (he is a chubby man in a light coloured loose-fitting suit, he’s hardly pronouncing «I’m technically married, but …»; she is a petite brunette in a provocative short red dress). Somewhere on the embankment howls the siren of a police car. Moustached bartender puts your (well, whose else?) misted glass of beer with a swaying head of foam on the counter. He unequivocally bites his lower lip and for some reason you smiles broadly. It’s clearly that tonight you are going to his place. Everything is rapidly slipping away, dissolving in the darkness of the southern night. All you had to do to experience all of that was just to turn on the mix of our precious Andrey Zhilin for 5/8: radio

And now we have Sergey, a business-class taxi driver whose car radio is always playing Monte Carlo. While drinking with us, he spoke of more inspiring times, when he used to pick up rides in his old Lada 2107, and of his favourite spot on Solanka Street to pick up clientele. He told us how they who had just been so cheerful out in public or in a nightclub suddenly, when getting in the car, seemed to their spark. Most often their reflection in his review mirror showed pure sadness. It was for those clients that he produced this mixtape.

Vegetable gardens have become an unexpected treasure troves of mixtapes. Gardeners, whether for practical purposes of scaring away birds or in bursts of inspiration akin to communal art, put into use CD-Rs, long-forgotten by their children, and hang them on the vegetable plots, hardly suspecting the musical gems these discs contain. We found one of these CD-Rs in a garden in Avdotino. There are the words written on it in blue: «For the car. 03.06.2002»

While everyone is getting ready for Valentine's Day, we invite you to listen to a new mix recorded by Dima Safronov. Dima is the founder and ideologist of the independent radio @5na8radio , where he has released over 200 mixes collected from all over the world.

Describing the mix, Dima shared his emotions: 

"On the day when everyone gives each other valentines and all sorts of trinkets as hints of sympathy or love, I remember my romantic relationships and the stages I've been through. Whether it's saying goodbye at the Bryansk bus station or strong hugs in the Almada hostel, endless calvados and universal shyness before a kiss, watching movies together, sharing one earphone, or a cigarette smoked by two. All of this happened, and perhaps will happen again. This is a compilation of compositions that miraculously turn into one of these stories."

Планов на завтра нет (да и есть ли оно – завтра?), привычные тревога и беспокойство бесследно растворились, периодически возникающие на экране телефона уведомления совершенно тебя не волнуют, даже не хочется проверять, что там. Все, что сейчас по-настоящему важно – это запотевший бокальчик лагера в твоей изящной руке. Пышная шапка пены медленно тает, капли конденсата приятно холодят кончики твоих пальцев. Вот бы каждый день был таким. Ах, мечты-мечты.

Красиво уходим в короткий отпуск под ритмы грандиозного микса Миши Политковского, записанного для недавнего фестиваля «Ветерок» в баре «Ровесник». Целый час аудиального блаженства про вторую самую важную вещь для нас всех (помимо музыки, конечно же) – пивко, пивасик, пивчик, пивандрий.

These yellowed plastic cassettes contain music that accompanied people's romantic experiences. This one was recorded in June 1996 in Porto.

On that day, when it rained again, he waited for a bus for an hour, just to see it racing by with a glowing notice “fora de service”. He walked. Probably, it was an unknown to him local holiday, for on his way he couldn’t find anything open: no bakery, café, bookshop to distract him from his melancholy. Eventually though there were some festive sounds coming out of lottery house he never saw operating before. Inside of the preserved mid-century interior music to his liking played. Men and women in uniforms danced with small beers in hands. Those were bus drivers, postmen, nurses, waiters. He joined the party that seemed like a salvation for him. 
Once the music finished and the strangers shuffled out, clinking bottles neatly on the marble floor, he went to the old-fashioned audio system, out of which he ejected a tape marked “Fora de Horas”.

Apartment 21, fifth floor. Gleb is washing a plate with a neat yellow rim. A barely visible steam rises beautifully from the hot water. The foam pleasantly runs down into the sink. For some reason, at that very moment, while looking at the steam, the foam, the shiny tiles of the kitchen backsplash, and his slouched reflection in the window, he suddenly remembered a story so old, it felt like it happened in a past life. A scorching day in Budapest, he ordered an espresso tonic at a café. Around him were bare concrete walls, pots with ficus plants, and posters in an unfamiliar language. The smiling cashier in a coral-colored t-shirt handed him a change. With a cute Eastern European accent, she complimented his recent tattoo of Pierrot's head in a cap. Oh God, how embarrassed he was! He couldn’t think of anything better to say than something like, “Well, you’ve got a great tattoos too”… except she didn’t have any. At least none that he could see. An awkward pause. He quickly forced a smile, took the change (a couple of coins, of course, fell loudly to the floor, so he had to spend time picking them up), waited for his drink, and dashed out into the July heat without looking back, trying to forget the embarrassing incident. Suddenly, Gleb felt just as awkward as if that scene had just happened now, right there in his kitchen. Poor boy, if only he knew there is a perfect remedy to quickly distract from embarrassing memories (and everything else), and that is the Solid Angle mix for 5/8: radio.

Apartment 140, ninth floor. Yegor stuck his large shaved head out of the bedroom window. Low in the night sky, the lights of a plane were gliding by, and soon the familiar hum of jet engines would catch up. Yegor wished he could be there on board right now. And not flying to some far away place, but coming home. Fidgeting in a not-so-comfortable seat, waiting for the landing, and looking out of the window at the familiar concrete high-rises on the outskirts of the city, the occasional cars on the roads, and the streetlights casting a soft yellow glow on the empty yards and streets. Then there would be the taxi ride with an overly chatty driver, the familiar clank of the key in the door lock, and a home that feels and smells a little different after a long absence. Like putting on a winter coat for the first time in a year. And when the floor in the living room creaks underfoot, as it always does, there will be a sudden, special kind of comfort — just like the feeling when you turn on the Sasha Foam mix for 5/8: radio.

You were woken by the cries of seagulls circling above the neighboring house. A memory surfaces — so distant it feels almost imagined: a waffle cone with an enormous scoop of strawberry ice cream in your hand, old fishing boats rocking at the pier, a bandage proudly displayed on your knee after a tumble down the steep limestone stairs (was rushing to the pool really worth it?), a dusty little truck creeping along the cobblestone promenade with the glass bottles rattling ominously in plastic crates in its bed, a sharp pebble lodged in your sandal that you stubbornly ignore. Soon, your parents will return from the souvenir shop in that ancient tile-roofed house, bringing you a garishly printed sunhat — the one you’ll leave behind on the bus ride home. For now, though, you listen to the seagulls wheeling high above, though this moment deserved nothing less than Victor M’s mix for 5/8: radio. But how could you have known that back then?

You suddenly hear the distant clatter of train wheels somewhere far away. And in your memory surfaces a summer day when you were still very young. A winding forest path. The crunch of pine cones under your feet. Clouds glimpsed through the branches of towering trees. You already know — what comes next is everything you once loved: the creak of the old metal gate at the dacha, the rope swing hanging from the willow bowed over the pond, ice cream melting in the summer heat from the kiosk in the neighboring garden settlement, the echo of your footsteps through abandoned pioneer camp buildings, the smell of your mother's vegetable soup wafting from the kitchen, the locomotive's whistle and the rhythmic clatter of express trains rushing past the station. The only thing missing would be kaisou's mix for 5/8: radio. And that, of course, is a rather regrettable oversight

Suddenly, you catch a faint, familiar scent — an aroma you first encountered in a far-off country. And it makes you wonder: does anyone there remember you, or that you once walked their streets?

Maybe it's the woman in the green car, singing loudly along to the radio, who stopped for you at a crosswalk late one evening. Or the freckled cashier with braces, who rang up your bottle of ice-cold soda on a day when the sun was relentlessly hot, and you wished you could be a smooth, small stone at the bottom of the sea. Or perhaps it's the older laborer in his dusty overalls, passing his lunch break with a glass of beer at a plastic table in a cheap diner.

And of course, remembering all these strangers in foreign cities, whose eyes you briefly met, is a far more pleasant experience when you're listening to the matteo just mix for 5/8: radio through your headphones

This mixtape was recorded for the farewell disco of the senior group of the third stream of the Poseidon children camp 15 km from Varna in Bulgaria.

You look out the window, then at your phone screen, then out the window again. Why is it getting dark so early? Suddenly, images from a similarly cool August evening many, many years ago appear in your mind. The dim glow of a couple of yard lamps (there were three altogether, but the third one, as always, was out). An old bench with peeling paint. The creak of swings on the playground. The clingy orange taste of cheap chewing candy. Zhenka’s classmate’s ridiculously wide sweatpants. A lone rusty shell-shaped garage covered with the first yellow leaves (remember how you always wondered what was inside?). The metallic smell on your palms after hanging on the monkey bars. A throbbing bruise on your knee from falling off your bike at the dacha. And that strange, uneasy premonition that carefree life — the one you’d grown so used to over those three months — was about to end. All of that was there, of course. The only thing missing was Marques’ mix for 5/8: radio. And yes, that’s a terrible omission

You notice that nearly all the leaves have fallen from the trees outside your window, and through their bare branches, you can now clearly see the lights on in the bulding across the street. It suddenly brings back a memory of an autumn evening many years ago.

It had grown dark with startling speed. Your parents were taking you with them to visit friends — there was no one to leave you with at home — and all you wanted in the world was to stay behind and watch cartoons. Under the soles of your small, disliked shoes, you felt the squelch of puddles, the slick of wet asphalt, and the soft decay of rotting leaves. A commuter train hummed in the distance. In the twilight of the back courtyards, you could just barely make out the silhouettes: a woman in a puffer jacket with a German shepherd on a leash, the building of a long-shuttered shoe repair shop, a man in a huge coat drinking alone on a bench, and the old garages where a group of teenagers was leaping across the rooftops. But what captivated you most was the light in the windows of the surrounding apartments. It was so fascinating to peer through the bare branches of the poplars and chestnut trees. The only pity is that on that walk, you had no way to play the Grisha Gerg mix for 5/8: Radio

Maybe it’s the pattern of the paving stones, or maybe it’s the design on a stranger’s scarf in the metro, but something suddenly reminds you of that apartment carpet.

The very apartment that, not so long ago — just yesterday, it feels — was the very definition of home. With its old, creaky parquet in the hallway, the clothesline with multicolored pegs on the balcony, the sideboard from a city starting with a "B" (Bucharest? Budapest? Bryansk?), the terrifyingly gas water heater, and, of course, the big living room carpet.

Now, it is home to completely different people. People who know nothing about the sideboard, or about how you used to love studying the patterns on that very carpet, watching the shadows of the towering poplars outside the window while your grandmother conjured up lunch by the stove in the kitchen.

And doing so would have been a hundred times more pleasant with Andrey Panin's mix for 5/8: Radio playing in the background. That much is certain
