Aired on David James's "Moovin in the Right Direction" radio show on 6th August, 2020.  It's a morning show (06:00-09:00), so I aimed to appeal to both listeners starting off their days as well as those who had pulled all-nighters.

5South Records is an independent music group created by DJs and producers, JR Mendez and Mimi Raza. From Tecate, Baja California, established in April 2020 and focusing in House, Deep House, Tech House, Funky, Jackin’, Acid, Disco and Downtempo. JR and Mimi met in 2011 while working with Cris Herrera from Soul On Beat. Collectively, they have DJ’d at countless private parties in San Diego, Baja California, Los Angeles and Hawaii including back to back sets since 2003. They have also supported and played at events such as Sunrise Festival (B.C.), Love Festival (San Francisco), Earth Dance, Moon Drop, San Diego Pride, Art of Sound, Siesta, Lifted Entertainment, Kimika, Soleil, Wet Pool Parties, Detour SD, Summer Daze, Lady Lush, Mardi Gras San Diego and Habitat (We Are One). They’ve opened for DJs and shared the decks alongside Alix Alvarez, Tato, Halo, Joshua Heath, Colette, DJ Heather, DJ Dayhota, Lazaro Casanova, David Alvarado, DJ Frances, Blackliquid (Hed Kandi UK), Derek Dunbar, Hector Moralez, Chuck Love, Roy Davis Jr., Miguel Migs, Gene Farris, Giano, Fred Everything, Franky Boissy, and Cesar Coronado.  

5South’s experience started in 2004 when Mimi was working at nightclubs and warehouse parties in San Diego doing it all: from promoting, charging cover, handling the VIP guest list to bartending, DJ’ing and even managing her own events. She has worked and played at nightclubs such as Spin, Onyx/Thin, The Office Bar (SD), Blonde (formerly known as Bar Dynamite), El Dorado (formerly known as AIrport Lounge), Deco’s, On Broadway, Club Paparazzi (Hawaii), WorldBeat Cultural Center, Palomar Hotel, Kava Lounge, Bourbon Street, Sublevel and held a residency at Red C Lounge on Tuesday Nights; not to mention a handful of underground warehouses too! During this time, JR started to throw his own house parties and connecting with people in the scene from Baja (Tijuana, Ensenada, Rosarito and Tecate). He’s played at venues like Eurobar (Ensenada), El Tinieblo (Tijuana), Papas & Beer (Rosarito), Rumors (Tijuana, formerly known as Deck 22), and Onyx (SD). As their paths crossed, they shared the same passion for music and attended many events together. JR has been producing music all along and has decided to team up with Mimi to share their music with the world.
