pytchblend - selections from "Sweat"

This programme is dedicated to all those who venture out into the world clutching cables, spools and microphones, leaving the solid comforts of bingo, the telly and the wife. Lost in their endless quest for the elusive, the enchanting, the all satisfying object they seek - the right sound, with a good signal to noise ratio...

The past is often said to be a foreign country. This radio programme features audio postcards from some of the inhabitants. Active in the 60s and 70s, the Leicester Tape Recording Club was a club for tape recording enthusiasts united in their dedication to the art of recording sound. Like a latter day Mass Observation these amateur sound recordists sometimes unintentionally captured the minutiae of a now surreal suburbia. A forgotten world of bri-nylon, briar pipes and tank-tops met an arcane society who spoke of tape-speeds and soldering irons. We take a nostalgic (and occasionally humorous) look at the club and its members as their memories wow and flutter like their disintegrating reel-to-reel recordings. This is a story not just of a club but a community, a community of hobbyists, amateurs and charming personalities who captured otherwise long extinct phenomena like 'The Golden Wonder Boy'. Memories are made of hiss...

(FKA PORTRAIT) Boh

One of my favourite friends of old was a tortured crazy genius called Brett Crummett.  We shared so many eye-opening experiences together.  Sadly I found out that he's no longer with us, so here's a montage of us messing about in the early 80s.  The voice and guitar is Brett, the rest is my doing.  I only wish I'd recorded more of him, because this snippet doesn't really do him justice.

This is the soundtrack of a video of the same title made by Lin Li. It seeks to evoke the mystical quality of water in nature through a combination of vocal sounds (breathing, whispering and humming) and field recordings of waves. 

Originally from Hong Kong, Lin Li now lives in Glasgow.  She uses moving image and sound in her creative practice (www.linli-art.com) and likes the fact that they are more ethereal and do not take up too much physical space.  As a keen choral singer, she enjoys experimenting with her voice in her sound work.

'Dreamlands' looks at four bereaved people's experiences of the dead returning in their dreams. These poignant, powerful visitations can both comfort and disturb the dreamer; they provide a final chance to say goodbye to loved ones, but also a painful reminder of their absence.

Et si on imaginait la vie sur Terre dans 10 millions d’années ? 
Le sculpteur animalier Marc Boulay et le paléontologue Sébastien Steyer  ont imaginé ensemble un fantastique bestiaire “Demain, Les Animaux du Futur”. 

Plongeon en plein Néozoïque, où il sera question de radiation évolutive, de têtard géant, d’inversion des pôles magnétiques, de perroquets terrestres… 
Un monde possible et improbable comme on les aime, où l’on entend que la co-évolution des espèces s’applique aussi entre scientifiques et artistes.
Une histoire qui commence par "Il serait une fois…"

The animal sculptor Marc Boulay and the paleontologist Sebastien Steyer imagined together a fantastic bestiary “Tomorrow, Animals from Future”.

Cosmic swoop in Neozoïc Times, where we could deal with adaptative radiation, a giant newt, the inversion of magnetic poles, ground parrots...

A possible and improbable world as we like it, where we can hear that the co-evolution of species also applies between scientists and artists.
A story that begins with turning the time tables.
