Espejos Fronterizos (Border Mirrors)
Lewis Carroll in his book "Alice through the looking glass" (1871), describes how Alice, when playing with her cat, discovers that there is a world on the other side of the mirror, in which there is a room just like hers, only that everything is upside down; she continues thinking that on the other side there is a “sea of beautiful things”, however, the other reality was not necessarily as she imagined it. In the same way, the soundscapes that physically occupy the same territory of the border between Tijuana and San Diego, are contrasting and divided by a border wall. On the Mexican side, you can hear a family enjoying their free time on the beach, a band of musicians, cries with their bells from street vendors, a exclamation of “massages”, and the laughter of children; while on the US side, the soundscape is silent, you can only hear the sea, some birds and, a military helicopter that guards its border.
