Punjab - 6ixsr 
Samples an old folk punjabi song from the 80s by a legend named Kuldeep Manak. The main instrument here is called a Sarangi. I tried to mix in the wave genre with this folk sample and ended up with this. The original song which i sampled was recorded live, so the quality was a little tough to work with. Definitely not my cleanest mix, but I just loved the sample.

For those that don't know, Sidhu MooseWala was an influential Punjabi singer, rapper, & lyricist. He effortlessly combined different genres within Hip-Hop with Folk Punjabi Music. This included trap, drill, rnb, reggae, you name it. He pushed the boundaries to where no Punjabi artist had ever done before. Unfortunately, he was shot and killed while driving in his home village. His legacy will live on forever.

This song was one of the last songs he released. In it, he talks about how he will die young, saying "Uthoga jawani ch janaza mithiye", which translates into: "my funeral will be held in my youth". The cover art for this song showed a picture of the car 2Pac was shot in. Coincidentally, just a short while later, he met the fame fate. 

Now if you follow my music, you'll notice that I try to combine different trap genres with punjabi instrumentation and percussion's. Sidhu was my #1 influence, and you can clearly hear this in anything I've ever posted. This is why the death has profoundly shocked me. He was 28 years old.

I had this project started the same day the song dropped. I wanted to make a remix instantly so I started it then and didn't get a chance to come back to it. Now when I opened this project, I changed it completely. It was a bhangra remix originally, but now it reflects the current state of the Punjabi community.

The Last Ride 🥀

The Story of Mirza & Sahiban. It's like the punjabi version of Romeo & Juliet. I hope to make a collection of remixes for this classic folk tale. 

This song in particular is sung in the 80s by a legendary punjabi artist named Kuldeep Manak. 

Bakki is the name of the horse which Mirza (the Romeo in this case) rides. In this song, Bakki is trying to wake up Mirza, but Mirza can't get up. He's been killed by Sahibans (the Juliet ) brothers.

The Story of Heer & Ranjha (lyrics and translations up on my youtube channel)

I’m sure many of you know the gist of the story, but how well do we actually know it?

Growing up, I was surrounded by a lot of different musical influences, but my favourite singer was Kuldeep Manak. I don’t know what it was about him, but I just loved all his work. Although my generation knows of Manak, and they appreciate his work, it seems as if they don’t entirely understand the beauty behind the music. Part of that could be due to meanings lost in translation, and another part of it could be due to the fact that most of his work was acoustic/recorded live, which kids don't listen to very often these days.

This year I’ve started a project where I wanted to break those barriers and get a wider audience introduced to the magic of Dev Tharikewala (Manak Ji’s writer) and Kuldeep Manak himself. I will be making a series of modern remixes that will tell the story of Heer & Ranjha. On YouTube/IG I will have the translations of the lyrics on screen so that everyone may understand what is being said. I’ll try to make each remix a different style and will be uploading them to SoundCloud/YouTube. I believe there are about 20-25 different songs through which the story is told. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have completed this project and future generations will continue to know the full story of Heer & Ranjha told by the legendary Kuldeep Manak. It can never replace the original recordings, but hopefully this project will inspire people to fall in love with the original songs


For those that follow me and have never heard of this story, it’s similar to Romeo & Juliet in a sense. Romeo in this case is named Ranjha, and Juliet is named Heer. 

I’m starting off this year with this track called “Heer Doli Beh Gai Kherian Di”. In this point of the story, Ranjha learns that the love of his life is forced to marry someone else. The song goes through the different emotions and thoughts that Ranjha had at this time.

Putt Jattan De (Feat. Soni Pabla & Surinder Shinda)

Everyone who's punjabi knows about the classic track Putt Jattan De. It was originally sung by Surinder Shinda for the movie with the same name, back in 1982. The film & the song turned out to be a huge success and is considered iconic within the punjabi community.

It's been remade many many times by many singers. One of these singers is none other than Soni Pabla himself.

For those of you that follow me and aren't punjabi, you may not have heard of Soni Pabla. He was a singer from the early 2000's with an amazing voice. Every song he touched was gold. Unfortunately, he passed away tragically during a performance at the young age of 30.

The vocals I've used here are from an old UK track by @PanjabiHitSquad released way back in 2003. Soni sang this to a completely different beat from the original, and it was made to be a UK garage version of the original.

It took me literally forever, but I was able to chop/screw/warp the vocals to be similar to Shinda's 1980s version. I tried to do more, but I was just messing it up if I tried to process the vocals any more lol.

I also tried to keep it as folk as I could while incorpating modern elements into it. The first half is Soni Pabla only, the second half is a both Surinder Shinda and Soni Pabla singing together.

Heer Ranjha Project: Song One - Mera Dhido Ranjha Beparwah Kudio

          This is the first song from the Heer Ranjha Project I began this year. For context, Heer/Ranjha is like a Romeo/Juliet story originating from Panjab/Pakistan/Northern India. In the story, Ranjha is born into a rich farmer family. He has many older brothers, and Ranjha himself was the youngest. Since he was the youngest, he never did any work out in the fields; his brothers would take care of it. All Ranjha did was play the flute and relax. As he got older, his brothers would ask him to assist them in their farming duties, but Ranjha was carefree and never bothered to help. Eventually, Ranjha’s father passed away and the land he owned was split up between his sons. Ranjha’s brothers gave him the harshest plot of land, one that required a lot of hard work to produce any crops. Since Ranjha had never actually bothered to work before, he found this extremely difficult. His brothers and sister-in-laws kept taunting and shaming Ranjha because he was unable to farm his land properly.

            Eventually Ranjha got fed up and said screw it, I’m leaving this village. He took his flute and a few belongings then set out on an adventure. During his travels, he gained some fame for how well he was able to play the flute. Everyone who heard him became mesmerized. Eventually he ran into Heer, the “Julliet” of this story. She fell in love with him at first sight. She then convinced her father to hire Ranjha as a shepherd. This way both Heer and Ranjha could stay close to one another. Heer would often bring sweets and other food for Ranjha as he worked. Ranjha did great at his job and soon the whole village knew of the handsome Ranjha who plays the flute.

                    This song in particular is where Dev Tharikewala (the writer) decided to start the story. Although this isn’t the first song sung by Manak regarding Heer/Ranjha, this song is the one that contains the earliest part of the story. The song is told in the perspective of Heer; she is explaining to all her friends how amazing Ranjha is

Warriors

This song is from the 1956 movie called “Jagte Raho” and it shows the first time that bhangra (a Panjabi folk dance) was done on camera!

This week Sikhs and Panjabi’s celebrate what is called Vaisakhi (or Basakhi). There are different cultural and religious reasons for the celebration, but in this post, I’ll just focus mostly on the cultural parts.

Many of the people that live in Panjab are farmers, and Vaisakhi marks the ripening of the harvest. It’s a beautiful time when the crops turn golden, and the farmers are thankful and joyous for their yields. Bhangra is a North Indian/Panjabi folk dance which is very closely tied to the Vaisakhi festivals. One of the literal definitions of bhangra is “to be so overcome with joy that you start dancing”. While farming, the farmers would begin dancing in the fields; this helped time pass faster and they enjoyed their work while doing it. They would sing songs and play the dhol (drums) while in the fields. When the harvest was completed, large festivals were thrown, and the entire village would come out and enjoy themselves. Kind of similar to thanksgiving where they thank God for their great harvest and share the joy with their family and friends.

Channa Churi Da, the second song in this Heer Ranjha project. This one is a unique one from the rest. 

It describes what Heer & Ranjha get up to while hiding in the fields 👀. That means exactly what you think it means 🙊. It's one of the very few songs by Manak regarding this subject matter. 

I loved the music in this song, but for the longest time I couldn't really understand the lyrics. I guess that may have been a good thing considering they were kinda explicit lol. I've removed all the dirty parts so it should be mostly safe to listen to now.

Next song in the Heer Ranjha Story: Maan Karin Na Jattiye

Overall, Manak is singing in perspective of Ranjha. Backstory, Ranjha comes over to meet Heer. While waiting for her, he falls asleep on her bed. 

When she comes and finds him, she starts to taunt him. Ranjha responds by telling her that "your bed isn't as glamorous, and big as your chest is, don't be too prideful.  I got plenty of other gardens". 

Ranjha compares himself to a bird that can fly to any other garden at any time - he's got a lot of options.

Maan Karin Na Jattiye - Kuldeep Manak x 6ixsr

This song is called Challa and was popularized by Gurdas Maan in the 80s as it was used in the popular 1982 film “Laung Da Lishkara”. It’s now one of the most famous Punjabi folk songs, although it was first recorded in 1934 (and written even before that). The movie adaptation of this folk story focuses more on the love aspect, and it is referring to a lover and her partner. The word “Challa” itself can also be translated into “Ring”.

However, the original folk story is sung from the perspective of a sailor named Jhalla. His job was to transport goods and passengers across the rivers of Panjab. Jhalla only had one young son; his wife passed away shortly after his son was born. Jhalla raised him all on his own. One day, Jhalla became severely ill, and the medicine needed was across the river. Since Jhalla was too sick to sail, his teenage son named Challa decided he would go retrieve the medicine. Challa himself was not experienced in sailing; he only accompanied his father a few times, which is why his father had refused to let him go. In the morning, Challa ignored his father’s pleas and set out to sail to the opposite shore. Unfortunately, there was a large storm which caused his boat to capsize, and Challa to drown. Meanwhile, Jhalla continued to wait for his son, all night, the next day, and so on. Eventually villagers noticed that Jhalla had been sitting in the same spot for days, so they approached him. But by then, Jhalla had become overcome with grief over the loss of his young son. He began roaming the streets while singing these verses. Since this is a folk story passed down through music, there is a lot of variation on what happened depending on who you ask, but this is the basic story of it.

In this song, Manak is singing in the perspective of Heer's mother. Basically Heer's mother is trying to explain to her daughter that this relationship with Ranjha will never work and that she needs to leave him. She then goes on to explain that people are finding out, and if the wrong people learn of her relationship with Ranjha, they could be in trouble...

The title of this song translates to "What Kaidon says to Chuchak". Kaidon is the name of Heer's uncle, and Chuchak is the name of her father.

So far in the story, Heer has fallen in love with Ranjha, and they've been doing a lot of lovey dovey stuff. Theres some rumours spreading in Heer's village of Siyal about Ranjha and Heer being together. In the last song, Heer's mother sat her down and explained to Heer that she needs to leave Ranjha as someone of her status should not be associating with a servant who tends to the crops and animals.

This song is the next in the chronological order. As the story goes, Kaidon was spying on Heer trying to catch her spending alone time with Ranjha. Eventually Kaidon saw them together and came running back to the village square. The "Sath" is like a gathering or meeting place in a village where everyone goes to chill. So Kaidon decides to run there and confronts his brother Chuchak ( Heer's Father) about what his daughter is up to. By the end of the song, Kaidon tells Chuchak that Heer should get married off to the folks from the Khera village soon to prevent any further embarrassment.

So this is the track that's next up in the series. In the previous track we heard from the perspective of Heer's uncle named Kaidon who told Heer's Father that she's getting too close with their servant Ranjha. Kaidon suggested that Heer's Father should fix her marriage with someone named Saide from the village Khede. At this point in the story, Heer learns of the plans her father and uncle are making, and begs Ranjha to do something as she doesn't want to leave him.

This track is one of my absolute favourite Manak tracks even though it is super underrated and not many people even know of this track. It was a really tricky one one to mix but I think it turned out nice.

This track was on Kuldip Manak's 1978 ep called Folk Songs of Punjab. It's the next one up in the Heer Ranjha project. In the previous track, Heer tells Ranjha that her family is planning to get her engaged to Saida. Heer begs Ranjha to do something about it. So, Ranjha goes to have a chat with Heer's mother. Eventually Heer's mom promises the hand of her daughter to Ranjha, and told him not to worry. But then comes along Saida, to which Heer's father and uncle had already promised Heer. And so the wedding plans are made and the dates are set. Ranjha learns of this and becomes upset with Heer and her mother. He claims he was betrayed by Heer's mother and that Heer is excited to start her new life with Saida. To which Heer responds and claims that she was unaware of her mother's promises and even though she is now engaged to Saida, she'll never love him. In this song, Manak sings from two perspectives, basically showcasing a poetic conversation between both Heer and Ranjha.

I actually had maybe 5 completely different versions of this song. The original was very fast and tough to get on beat lol. But eventually I found something that sounded good and stuck with it.

Maa Teri Ne Dhoka Kita - Kuldeep Manak x 6ixsr

I've made a lot remixes about Heer and Ranjha, but I wanted to showcase some less famous folk stories too. This one is about the story of Farhat the artist and Shirin the princess.

The story has been around forever, and many think that it maybe have been a true story, however it was popularized in 1178 when the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi wrote the folk tale as a part of a gift for a king. The same collection of stories included the folk tale of Majnun and Layla, which is a more well known folk love story.

Farhad/Farhat was a renowned sculptor in Persia and he was asked to come to the palace of the Queen to decorate her home. While he was there, he fell in love with the Queen's sister Shirin. Eventualy Farhat asked the Queen if she will allow him to marry Shirin. The Queen was obviously not going to allow a lowborn to marry a princess, so she came up with an impossible task for Farhat. She told him that she will agree to the marriage if he is able to carve a path for the river through a giant mountain. Farhat knew this was an impossible task, yet he set off and began working on carving out the mountain using his pickaxe immediately. He worked all day and all night, repeating Shirin's name over and over again to give him strength. With his intense determination and incredible skill, he was making considerable progress. Once the Queen heard that Farhat might actually accomplish the impossible, she devised an evil plan. She sent a messenger to go tell Farhat that Shirin has died. Upon hearing the news, Farhat fell to his knees and threw his pickaxe in the sky. When it came down, it hit him in the head, and Farhat died on that mountain. The news of Farhats death reached Shirin, and in response, she jumped off her balcony and plummeted to her death. In some versions it is said that the lovers reunited in heaven.
