SYSTEM108 PODCAST 159: CAPTAIN MUSTACHE

Ever since his first exposure to euro-dance pop as a twelve year-old kid, Berlin native Sascha Funke followed the siren call of electronic music, carving out his own spot at the forefront of leading-edge dance music. A seasoned hunter constantly digging for epic melodies, kicking beats or top-tier records to grace both his studio output and DJ sets, he specializes in deep, sweeping sounds - but always favored sitting on the fence when it came to the occasional shootout between genre trenches.

A well-known purveyor of allusive, pop-infused minimalism, Funke successfully combines the straightforward and the uncanny, all wrapped up in lean and stylish arrangements that don’t need much tools to establish a complex atmosphere - a sort of lock 'n' load romanticism that can be readily experienced on the much-acclaimed and highly influential full-length releases „Bravo“ (2003) or „Mango“ (2008). Both went on to become electronic classics in their own right and remain a rather popular choice on international dance floors to this day.

After establishing his unique musical vision on iconic underground imprints like BPitch Control or Kompakt, Funke has returned to the latter for his more recent efforts with Saschienne, a project he put forth with partner in crime Julienne Dessagne - resulting in 2012’s album „Unknown“, a master class in sparse, but highly effective techno songwriting that found its fair share of loyalists and serves as an ideal primer for Funke’s new solo output with the label. We could welcome him back, but then again, he wasn't really away.

After the release the duo toured around the world and further introduced their work with a dynamic live show. When Funke was not on stage with Julienne or spending his time with her and their son, he was occupying his weekends by playing his current favourite tunes and classics in some DJ booth around the world. The only Berlin-based producer that supports 1.FC Köln then had locked himself in the studio again and produced four new tracks the label Multi Culti, which celebrate techno darkly with melodies full of New Age and Krautrock spheres, cosmic trance moments and a slower BPM power.

As well he released on Tiga’s Canadian label Turbo Recordings the EP “IFA” and delivered four enchanting tracks between bewitched minimal tribal, twisted piano house, stomping psychedelic and space techno. And there is also a new solo album in the pipeline. It will be called “Lotos Land”, will see the light of the day on the Japanese label Endless Flight and presents the 40-year-old as a musician, that transcends deep felt emotions into a multidimensional ocean of sound. Those who would like to hear first impressions of his newest musical output should come to one of his DJ gigs - Sascha Funke likes to play unreleased sounds in DJ sets, which lately go beyond the average definition of techno and house and also presentdisco, wave, electro, cosmic, Krautrock and early electronic dance music. All mixed up with passion in order to kick all dancers into an unpredictable emotional journey, in which their bodies become absolutely unrestricted and bodiless.

I wanted to propose to Flemming (@flemming) to do a 716 Mix, but something different. We first talked about it in march 2013. 
Flemming quickly came back with the the idea of a darker mix. He worked A LOT, there are tons of edits especially made for this session, that’s why it’s only online in January 2014.

Why did he decide to play this Belgian sound?
“After italo faded away for me in 1986, became to Commercial and lost the magic, I moved to new beat and I have ALL new beat records ever released. After new beat died the belgian’s raised tempo and it became hard beat, Skizzo and eventually early European techno which I also loooove…. and I really got 99% of all early European techno records !!!!!!

Why did he choose the name “The Sound Of Belgium”?
“Just came to me because a lot of my friends from Belgium are telling me about a huge second wave of this musical genre right now!!!!!!…. and some friends have just released a compilation called “The Sound Of Belgium“…. so i thought it would be smart to pick the same title/name hehe
I believe it’s a strong concept mix…. strong theme….. all belgian early techno style from when the new beat rised up in tempo and became European techno.”

Jonathan Ward is a true 78rpm passionate man. He has created the blog Excavated Shellac where he shares some of his discoveries and allows the free download. He has also done some compilations in cooperation with the site Dust-to-Digital via its label Parlortone.
Let’s mention that « Opika Pende: Africa at 78rpm » was nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. And he has just completed a new one « Reeds » but the date of release has not been fixed yet.
« 78rpm records were made out of shellac, or at least coated with shellac, or a mix of shellac. But, it’s true that early records, 78rpm records, were made from the secretion of the lac beetle! »
I appreciate a lot his way of looking at music and passion for it. He is truly in love with finding 78rpm but he refuses the term « record collector » although he owns an astronomic quantity of records :
« Record collectors are eccentric people. I don’t even like the term “record collector.” They’ve been parodied far too many times. Accurately, I might add. But I could not live with myself as a “collector” without at least one person I could share sounds with. So this blog is for my friends, and for you, stranger.
This mix has been a project for a year and a half and now here it is. All the good things have an end:)

Dj Nomad (@vulkandance & @africaine-808) played at the first 716lavie Party ever (after 9 years of existence), alongside with the French record seller and dj, Boulo Disjoké (@boulo), and this is something big. For the occasion, both have recorded a special mix. Boulo Disjoké made a mix dedicated to the Afro-Caribbean music that was played in the African bars and restaurants in Paris in the 70/80’s.

Dj Nomad’s selection is like a compilation about the Cameroonian Diaspora in Paris in the 80’s :  100% Cameroonian Modern Soul + Disco, Parisian production. We can say that the African scene from that time in Paname (nickname from Paris) has been well represented here. Dig it here and come saturday in Paris at le 9B to hear this guy live, free entrance, 8PM-2AM, the rest is history.

To illustrate this mix, we wanted to use a photo from that era. It was hard to find some in google, until I discovered the amazing work of Bill Akwa Betoté who covered all this scene during twenty years. His work is a unique and exceptional testimony about this scene that has been a cornerstone in the musical and cultural life in Paris. What was happening in Paris at the time was having an influence abroad, some foreigners had their first contact with African music in Paris. Have a look at these photos from Bill they speak by themselves and don’t tell me you don’t want to just travel in time and dance with those people right now. I choose a photo from Princess Erika because the shot is off the hook and she is originally from Cameroon.

Françoijack (@francoijak) is a long time activist in the art/music scene in Bretagne, the west part of France. He discovered the illegal raves in the early 90’s, and since then, his passion for this music and the original spirit of this culture has never left him since : »our philosophy is to keep on the soul of the early raves, by mixing and crossing arts, people and 80's sounds in modern features. » This why he is still there, 25 years after his first rave parties as a promoter, staying active, keeping updated about the scene and the new talents, always starting new projects : running the art gallery DMA, the Vielspaß label (The Mick Wills Ep was among the Best of 2015 Juno List), throwing the wild Bargain parties (usually sold out), producing music or deejaying as Françoijack / Bocaccio, organizing all kind of designers fairs, creative flea markets and so on.

I have heard for the the first time about Nixxon (@nixxon) very recently because he was participating at the Camp Cosmic organized by the famous dj and digger Albion.
Nixxon has been involved with music for a while : he runs the label Cytown Records, co-hosts the radio show Radio Vendetta and contribute to the cool blog http://overfitti.ng-dis.co/. Be sure to check his other mixes.

Mathieu De Ridder (@djtechnician070) is an electro producer from The Hague in Holland. He is a purveyor of genuine electro music, that goes from the raw electro bass – including scratches, old school synths and robot male voices – to more funky italo tracks. Yancity Gurl (@yancitygurl)  is a young Russian Producer living in Kazan, state of Tatarstan, 11 hours drive east from Moscow. I discovered his music through his track "Thou Shalt Not Forget" featured on the compilation U S S R (Ur Social Status Resistance) on Opal Tapes. Later on I found more of his tracks and still loved his original techno vibe, his classy touch, the twist of early rave and deep house.
I'm super happy to publish his mix today, 1st january, on 716lavie : it's excellent techno music right there, groovy, smart, perfectly mixed and fresh as hell. Welcome to 2017.

Dunkeltier, aka Sneaker (@sneakerdj and @sneaker-edits), aka Gino Galan, aka Lupo in Bionda e Lupo (check their 716 Playlist and their upcoming EP « Die Kinder Aus Dem Park« ), aka Dérive with June (@june), aka Serial Error with Jacob Korn (@jacob-korn) & Credit 00 (@credit-00), aka another name to be found for his two projects coming with Scannoir (@scannoir) in 2018, aka many other names you might ignore…  has been here for a long time now in the underground « electro » music scene in the super wide meaning of the word. He released for numerous labels but has been particularly close of Uncanny Valley Records (@uncanny-valley-dresden), including its sublabel Rat Life Records, and Frigio Records (@frigio-records) run by our friend Juanpablo (check his 716 Mix).
Sneakers contribution is the reenactment of his long prepared mix of Russian (Italo) Disco and Post Punk for the Friday afternoon slot at the Camp Cosmic festival 2017. For those who don’t know it yet – CC is THE event for disco diggers in Europe since 2011 - invented by Albion (@big-muffle) in Sweden and now co-hosted by Spacelex (@spacelex) and a bunch of underground supporters from Dresden and Berlin.

Le Discoboulet (@le_discoboulet ), another "hidden" dj that I found thanks to Albion (@big-muffle) who booked it at his festival Camp Cosmic and thanks to Guillaume des Bois (@guillaumedesbois) who recommended it to me. When I say "hidden", I mean "to me", cause just a quick look at his gig dates is enough to see how much he is booked. He is an authentic records digger, looking for those rare vinyls with tracks you have never heard. He has been strongly influence by Danielle Baldelli's tapes from the 80's. "That was a key moment for me and i started to collect all kind of weird library music and stuff that is kind of danceable".

For this first edition of his balearic disorders, le discoboulet will take you on a journey made of sweet ballads, psycho-folk, funky trips, synth explorations and groovy meditations.

Clément Jehan aka La Mano Peluda (@la-mano-peluda ) is a dj based in Montreal, who explores the grooves from all around the world and more specifically the Latin and African ones during the Canicule Tropicale parties he co-runs with his friend Philippe Noël who already did 2 mixes for 716lavie (mix Latino & mix Congo). It’s been a while we discussed about a mix with Clément, but it needed some time to mature. Finally, it’s a musical voyage that takes us from Turkey to Trinidad with a big lay-over in Africa. Clément prefers those melodic journeys that cross continents to those focused on one single country.

The Yugolearica Mix series by WC7 (@wc7) aka Vladimir Crvenkovic is one of the best things I have discovered during the golden age of music blogs (circa 2010’s).  Since then, we’ve been talking with Vladimir about a 716 Mix he could do. I think it’s the longest time I have waited for a mix, exactly 6 years. It was worth waiting and as you could see, I am persistent and Vladimir has a word. So this mix is more a collection of beautiful tracks he love and could listen to endlessly.

"My beginnings in digging were about cosmic, kraut, balearic and yugo heritage, but nowadays I am all around, playing sounds depending of the occasion. Always inspired by world music and its influences in electronic dance with an experimental approach. 716 Exclusive Mix - WC7 : Pleromatic Delusions

The French Plastic Bamboo (@plasticbamboo) is dropping a unique mix of Balearic, early 90's French House, World and French Boogie with a guideline that is cheap synthesizer sounds. 

Before starting his Plastic Bamboo mixes series, he was part of the crew of les Les Yeux Orange (@les-yeux-orange). That was when he got back to France after spending 6 years in UK, Manchester, where he discovered the house and balearic scenes thanks to his roommate Patrick Ryder, who now works at Piccadilly Records and has just created his label Talking Drums (@talkingdrumsrecords). 
Until then, Camille was much more into the indie pop scene. During the years in England he toured and released tracks with his band May68 (@may68). They got a 12″, “The Prisoner”, published on Kitsuné (@kitsunemusique) and that was bridging the gap between pop and electronic music around 2010’s.
Nowadays, alongside his dj activity as Plastic Bamboo, Camille also produces music under the alias Alan Dente (@alan-dente-1). The Ep “Dark Nebula” has been released on Bordello A Parigi in 2016 and a few remixes since then in a sexy house/disco vein.
Time for this 716 mix that starts with a cover of Madonna's “La Isla Bonita” –  which used to be on my favorite album from her “True Blue” – by the Venezuelian born and Italian resident Lucia Montanari.

Jasper Verhulst is the Dutch bassist behind the Turkish Psych Folk band Altin Gün. This 716 Mix is made of all the records he found while on tour in France, Switzerland and Spain : a killer selection that includes Spanish Disco, Zouk, 80's pop, French and Italian 70's and much more. Jasper explained in an interview that he chose the name Altin Gün because he wanted something positive so he type "Golden Days" in google translate and Altin Gün came out. Well you can indeed feel his the good vibes in this mix.

716 Exclusive Mix - Jasper Verhulst (Altin Gün) : Tour Mix October 2018

Ed Isar (@ed-isar) has been pretty active lately with his gigs as a dj, his radio show “Moins Vite Plus Loin” (Slower and Further) and also with the label Musique pour la danse  – which is a sub division of Mental Groove records. that he co-runs with Oliver Mental Groove. It’s been a while we got in touch thanks to Sneaker who introduced us to each other. I suggested to Ed to do a slow mix for 716lavie, which is one of his trademarks. Eventually he came to me with a beautiful selection of tracks from Sri Lanka. There is the long story in French, but to make it short, Edouard traveled for a week inside Sri Lanka with his father and a friend. They had hired a guide/driver named Saman. This buddhist driver had an incredible selection of mp3’s that he was playing in his van : popular songs sung in Sinhala from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s but most of them had non traditional Sri Lankese instruments such as drum, bass or guitar. Some of them have a latin influence, a clear Caribbean touch. Indeed around 50’s-60’s Calypso was a worldwide trend and this part of popular Sri Lankese music was under this influence too.

I appreciated a lot the work of Boris Bunnik under his various aliases, especially his last series of Ep's, «Soul of the Automaton», I'm always surprised by the synths here.

6. Skee Mask - South Mathematikz [Ilian Tape]
Every release from Skee Mask is a big hit. I consider him as the best producer from the last years. His first Ep's on Ilian Tape are excellent, but the 2 albums are more than sublime.

7. Stenny - Lights On [ilian tape]
His recently released album is beautiful, but I have always loved this track featured on his Ep "Consume IV" from 2016, there was also the track "Consumer's Tool" that is huge!

8. Hiele - Verwelkomming [Ekster]
Hard to choose among the discography of Roman Hiele, but his album Ritmische Bezinning is simply fabulous.

It’s been a while that I’ve been following Hartzine. Even if I don’t think in terms of nationalities when it comes to music, I’m always happy to see some active, innovative, curious, and enthusiastic French or French-speaking blogs. I proposed Thibault to make a playlist at the end of 2010 but he suggested he’d rather do one at the end of the 1st term of 2011. And it was the perfect moment cause he just had hosted Ela Orleans a few days in his house and so discovered lots of new bands or new tracks he was happy and impatient to share.

Despite his name Señor Chugger (@senorchugger) is a young British producer : “I just liked Señor instead of Mister 😀”. This is how he describes himself : “Forged in the darkness of a Welsh basement, Señor Chugger was born through a caustically potent passion for Chug, Italo & EBM.”

He dropped earlier this year a promising Ep full of italo / nu disco with a twist of English funkyness on top, on Moustache (@david-vunk), the records label from David Vunk that has been putting out quality stuff regularly for a while now.

Señor Chugger will release more stuff as soon as he gets a new computer. Here is his 716 Mix for now, just on time to celebrate the end of the containment here in France : some italo-ish, balear-ish, nu-disco-ish melting pot in the middle of which you can find a Colombian and a French tracks.

I have discovered Janos Borsos Mike Nylons (@mikenylons) because I have received some news from his record label Farbwechsel (@farbwechsel) about his last project : "Eneme I". I liked it and wanted to offer him to do a podcast.

He is mainly a visual artist working with his wife since 2008, their common project is called Borsos Lőrinc. But he’s also been super active in the audio field, focusing on doing electronic music without compromise, something between abstract experimental and disturbing techno.

I have started to check Majus’s soundcloud (@majuskalendorius) after I saw he liked the super cool 716 playlist by Cozsmic Töfü. His soundcloud feed was brilliant, full of interesting tracks I had never heard of and pertinent podcasts. I congratulated him and proposed him to do a 716 mix. He gave me this set recorded live at the Opium club in Vilnius. Here you go, great selection and very good technique.

Let's start with a copy of the message I first sent to dj KATMANDÜ (@dj_katmandu) : "First I was like « ah ok, some more italo », but then I was very surprised about how good your mix for Italo Moderni (@italo_moderni) was for example, it’s like this with italo, you always think, it’s over, that everything has been said and still you can get a nice surprise, but that is not everyday."

This led me to invite her to make a mix for 716lavie. She proposed to do it as Magic Tundra (@magic_tundra_show), which is the Barcelona duo formed by herself KATMANDÜ and Louis Moorhouse Gann (@louismoorhousegann). They are also founders of Electric FUN FUN, a series of parties in Barcelona. The duo was born in 2017 with a bimonthly podcast on Radio C / C and since then, they have been playing at various festivals and underground parties. Their sets are known for their high energy and punchy rhythms with an electronic selection of '80s sounds ranging from Italo, synth-pop, ebm, new beat, and wave.
