Territories is the debut compilation from brand-new audiovisual label 79Ancestors. Initiated as a celebratory call-to-action for musical friends and family to compose soundtracks for “imaginary landscapes”, the inaugural LP lays the foundation for a year of upcoming collaborations amongst a diverse set of musicians, designers, and performers. 

A collection of both music and visual art, featuring core 79A artists (Tongueless, A.M. Architect, Before Tigers) as well as guest contributions from Telefon Tel Aviv, Shigeto, Rafael Irisarri, and more. Territories is presented as a color-vinyl LP bundled with a customized 79A Cardboard VR viewer and a free iOS / Android app.

Warm-up DJ set at Vague Terrain (@vagueterrain) at Underground SF, San Francisco, 6 April 2018 prior to @gel-set and @group_rhoda playing a couple of live sets.

Such a great party and vibe.....run by some very nice people.....I heartily recommend to anyone passing through SF!!

Though normally I prefer vinyl, for this live mix, I was just using my laptop and Ableton plus a few effects plug-ins....and because the interface I was given only had 2 outputs I wasn't able to do any cueing over the headphones which is why every so often you'll hear tracks coming in and then leaving again and something else coming instead, because only once hearing what was coming in through the monitors would I realise the tracks maybe didn't work so well and quickly tried to correct things. So apologies for the noisy, messy, discordant sections!! Regardless, fun was had. I hope you enjoy this recording too.

Scott Campbell is an audiovisual polymath known amongst producers and sound design gearheads for his highly sought-after handmade tape manipulation instruments and drenched, textural passages released as one half of Bell Mountain (with Geoff Dumont). Photos From The Flood—and its’ companion photographic documentary—places Campbell’s latest work squarely at home on 79Ancestors, which finds itself obsessed with releases soundtracking the physical manifestations of personal nostalgia. In this case, the music and visuals explore the leftover evidence of a family photo collection, transformed by a house flood in Texas during the summer of 2016.

Awash with muted and distant vignettes, each song weaves in and out of barely-decipherable evidence of melody in decay, not unlike the warped state of the photo albums which left the artist and his family struggling to see the beauty through destruction during the aftermath of the floods. “Many of the pictures were totally ruined, but the way the colors had run and smeared created beautiful abstractions.”

The music feels like a peek into a half-preserved state, reflecting on the subtle suggestion of song while at other times gauzy folk tunes surface like lost rehearsal tapes. The warmth and melancholy succeed on a level that transcends oversimplified ambient cassette music, and the sense of loss is palpable as evidenced in the completely unrecognizable keepsakes discovered while sorting through the salvage with his brothers and parents: “It was a glimpse into their past that I hadn't seen much of before, to see these pictures while sitting in their (our) house as it was literally being torn apart was an indescribable feeling.”

From “Photos From The Flood” out in January on 79ancestors . Available digitally, on cassette, and a special edition which includes a cassette and a 42-page photo zine featuring destroyed Polaroids I created. The album and images were inspired by the beauty-through-decay experience of sifting through waterlogged photo albums after my parents’ house flood in the summer of 2016. The effect of the destruction led to stunningly beautiful and abstract remnants, leaving only unrecognizable evidence of memories.

Daniel Stanush and Diego Chavez are A.M. Architect, a duo that melds live instrumentation and electronic production techniques into emotive, elegant compositions. Guitar layers and electric piano are broken apart, rebuilt and spread over a rhythm section that fuses hip-hop and beat music.
