Seattleites Trey Gunn and Michael Cozzi join esteemed drummer Jerry Marotta and NY keyboardist David Jameson to harness the core of these songs. Added to the pedigree of these players is the voice of Brian Cummins. His interpretations add haunting authenticity to the immaculate arrangements.

This retrospective, two-disc set includes over 2 hours of music drawn from Gunn’s catalog. Known for his work with King Crimson and as a pioneer of the touch guitar, Gunn has produced 8 solo recordings. For this dynamic mix of material, Gunn, a much sought after collaborator, has brought in additional tracks from artists he has worked with over the years. Tracks from Russia, Mexico, Italy, Finland and the USA are melded with his solo work in this fascinating collection. 

Gunn says “I am often surprised at the fresh kind of playing I do on other people’s records. Somehow they pull things out of me that I can’t always get myself.” He is joined by Russian vocalist Inna Zhelannaya, Bill Frissell drummer Matt Chamberlain, Mexican bass player Alonso Arreola, the Italian progression group N.Y.X., Finland's Kimmo Pohjonen and many others.

In addition to his 11 solo cds, ten-string touch-guitarist, Trey Gunn has toured and/or recorded with King Crimson, David Sylvian, Vernon Reid, Brian Eno, TOOL, Azam Ali, Puscifer, John Paul Jones, Robert Fripp & David Hykes. He is currently working with the groups TU, KTU, his multi-dimensional performance group Quodia, and continues to score for film and coach musicians in the creative process

Crafting moments that ricochet between meditation and a full body purge, she is an electric, adrenaline inducing performer voted Seattle’s Best Classical Musician and nominated for NW Vocalist of the Year.

Rooted and defined by singing in her own syllabic language, Crystal Beth began in 2010 and she performs solo using loop pedals and delays, and a five-piece rock outfit (the Boom Boom Band) to craft and explore her idiosyncratic and distinctive original music. "Playing With Fire" is the first live recording by Deep Energy Orchestra. This super-group showcases prog-phenom Trey Gunn (King Crimson) and Indian percussion master Selvaganesh (Shakti, John McLaughlin, Jonas Helborg) teaming up with composer Jason Everett (Mister E) and a Seattle-based classical string ensemble.

Performing the eclectic compositions of world-jazz bassist Jason Everett, this group of Indian, Prog Rock, and Classical musicians take the listener on a journey of exotic soundscapes. Jason’s ability to weave Indian-style melodies together with complex, funky, odd-meter grooves is deceptively natural.

More-strings-than-usual might be a theme for this group as lead violinist Radhika Iyer, from San Francisco played her seven-string electric violin and Everett himself is known for his unique seven-string fretless bass. Other local musicians who rounded out the sound included tabla player Anil Prasad, and classical musicians, Rachel Nesvig on violin, Aleida Gehrels on viola, and Phil Hirschi on cello.

These performances were recorded live over a two-day recording session at the Jack Straw Cultural Center in Seattle, WA as part of an Artist Residency award. Everything was also captured on video with multiple cameras so that the unusual instruments (tabla, kanjira, seven-string electric violin, Warr Guitar, and Selvaganesh’s custom drum kit) can be seen as well as heard.
