A song about getting lost in space, losing communication with Earth then, after several years, with the air supply going out, blowing the ship as a last ditch effort to communicate with ground control. You know, the same old story.

I thought about making this a continuation of the story about Major Tom, and considered invoking his name in the lyrics somehow, but decided against it. But, now you know who it is about.

Seven Graylands - Crisis Line

This was the first track in the new studio. Cormac Strain suggested I do a cover of Kate Bush’s Experiment IV. I’ve actually thought of doing a cover of this song in the past.. so I did it.

The vocals were interesting to do. There are 5-6 tracks of vocals. I printed out the lyrics and highlighted different words. I only sang the particular highlighted words for each track. It looked something like this.

We _ _ _ for _ _.

_were _ _ _ the _.

_ _ working _ _ _ military.

_ _ _ secretly _ _ _.

The first vocal tracks were the hardest to get down.

After the vocals were recorded the tracks were each mixed differently. Some got more distortion, some just EQ’ed to death, while others were modulated with filters. I wanted the end result to sound as if the vocals were pieced together from other recordings.

Seven Graylands - Experiment IV (Kate Bush Cover)

I used a bunch of stuff in this track. Outside of the piano, bass guitar, drums and acoustic guitar, there is a track of bongo drums, accordion, guiro and a few synth lines.

I’ve been wanting to try and use an accordion in more songs and I think it fit nicely in this song. I even managed a little accordion lead.

The main synth pad is the Roland JP-8000. The little twinkling glimmer sounds and a few other effect sounds are the Alesis Ion.

The vocoder effects are with the MAM VF-11 analog vocoder. I used the Juno 6 as the carrier signal.
