Unleashing the 10th episode of Kuboraum’s Digital Sound Residency dedicated to Finnish native producer Emma DJ.

Intuitively exploring the wide spectrum of electronic music, Emma DJ haphazardly glues together sculptural soundscapes that defy the boundaries of genre, crossing experimental, ambient, trap, and deconstructed club-ready styles. Uneasy melodies, gritty rhythms, and abrasive textures are skillfully layered into an unclassifiable sonic collage to deliver his own interpretation of rap music.

Since 2019, Emma DJ has been releasing on imprints like UIQ, REIF, Collapsing Market, BFDM and L.I.E.S. Godrime (2021) was recorded in Paris during lockdown when he started to dive into rap music. Crossing rap production with his own distinct style, he compiled a series of one-shot iPhone recordings featuring collaborators such as Bambounou, Lemaire, Lily Standefer, Maoupa Mazzocchetti, Nono Ekichii, Swan Meat, Tmongo and Yves Ciroc. In June 2021, his first collaborative experimental trap live show ‘g0drm’ debuted at Bourse de Commerce, Collection Pinault.

Following 2021's 'godrime’ LP, ‘g0drm2’ shifted its focus towards the melodic side of trap music, playing with childlike harmonies, ego trip verses and autotune experimentation throughout 27 new songs inspired by today’s pop culture.  The mixtape featured contributions from Cambyse, Cxoxc, Elliotrdv, Eugène Blove, Low Jack, Nonoekichii, Rainy Miller, Shyweek, Simo Cell, Tmongo, Torus, Yves Ciroc, Lil Rhiz0me.

This September, Emma DJ will present a new live piece with multidisciplinary artist cxoxc at Berlin Atonal 2023.

Through chaotic, frequently harmonious genre mutations, Lol K create a sonic vision that defies category. They draw inspiration from disparate sources such as post classical, grunge, and contemporary club music.

With ‘climbing/holding/falling’ Lol K expand on their world building with greater lyrical expression than on previous releases while delivering a diverse selection of instrumental experimentation.

Expect harmonious and lush landscapes truncated by angular disruptions performed across their trademark selection of eclectic live instruments including whistles, flutes, strings, warped pianos, heavy 808 slides, detuned guitar and crunchy drum patterns that delve into the left field of contemporary club culture. All filtered through the pairs unique approach to song structure and production, combining moments of extreme precision with looser sonic gestures and utter disregard for genre categorisation.

From the swirling Jersey drums and pop vocals of single ‘Severed Tail’ to the driving, almost krautrock guitar chugs of ‘Doombox', ‘climbing/holding/falling’ sees Lol K stepping into new territory while further defining their sound.

On ACEN065, NYC-based producer enfleshed makes their All Centre debut with a collection of atmospheric, alien club cuts. They follow up the excellent Beautiful Behavior EP from earlier this summer with three tracks which embody the producer’s unique sonic world, manipulating textural otherworldly organic sounds over driving club rhythms.

The EP opens with chaos pendulum. Oscillating voices echo and overlap over pummelling kicks and razor-sharp percussion. The track builds with broken techno rhythms, whilst a swirling, discordant synth adds a melancholy edge to the atmosphere.

Next up, alien chatter introduces nightshade before crashing snares and weighty sub bass lead the track into a clattering electro-esque workout. An earworm synth melody enters the fray half way through the track before the kicks switch into a hefty four-to-the-floor pattern, ramping up the intensity until the finish.

our last muscle begins with meticulous, strange sound design before syncopated bass hits bring the track into its groove. Swirling percussion envelopes the listener while a tense melody pierces the mix, with tight rhythmic switch-ups to keep dancers on their toes.

The final katharsis release of 2024 is the 26-track compilation “Physical Force” featuring a wide range of affiliated artists from both the international and local Copenhagen electronic music scene. As the title hints, Physical Force delves into the visceral, bodily aspects of music, inviting its contributors to explore the theme of movement as a central element in their compositions. Each artist was encouraged to focus on rhythm, groove, energy, and the physicality of sound, which resulted in drum-heavy release from start to finish. While there is a consistent emphasis on rhythm and a bodily connection to the music, the tracks vary widely in style and sonic texture, ranging from big melodic anthems, gritty experimental techno, heavy jungle bangers, and beyond.
