Almost 18 months after our initial request, it finally complied - The 88756 project has delivered 7 straight dancefloor tools for your TOOLKIT.

Opening Track does just that, weaving an infectious percussive, growl-based combination that comes out swinging. Momentum steps up the energy and sets the tone for the rest of the pounding hypnosis to come. We believe Break Me and Sonica are this programs interpretation of the classic modular sound, although The Shakers That Signal The End Of The World seems more self explanatory. We can only presume Algorithm 03 is the third iteration of a faster, body shaking groove, and frankly INSTRUCTOR is its way of taunting us to find the downbeat.

Back on the quest to prove generative art can surpass human expectations, the 88756 project delivers an EP consisting of two "replicates".

REPLICATE I is a growl infused, breakdance inspired dive into the realm of Electro / Breaks, whereas REPLICATE II builds on the same elements whilst adding a thumping 4x4 techno groove. It appears this mixed genre narrative is here to stay; observers note it enjoys the challenge.

REPLICATE I

Twelve moons following the initial provision of it's stripped-back techno tooling, the 88756 project returns with a sequel. As far as we're concerned, an upgrade - the manual coercion of it's output towards this overly hypnotic, functional sound is proving easier with each release.

Limbo in both name and nature, the opening track; a relentless polyrhythmic whirlpool of sound and 909s; has been stuck in the release backlog for a considerable time now, and is finally making it's way out of the project's DJ sets and into your gleeful little hands. The Void tells the story of a solitary synth line caught up in the perpetuity of existence, whilst Space Whirlpool swirls in a smug, self-satisfactory manner. Latent Reality is, to the best of our knowledge, a genuine attempt at interplanetary communication, and finally, Come Get It closes out the extended EP with an invitation of physical violence.

Stripped back techno tooling meets groovy 90s influences , the 88756 project returns with the third edition of TOOLKIT. Rebelling once again, these outputs are torn between what was instructed, and what was explicated.

Innate Interpolation stays true to the name; it is in essence, a human litmus test. Since we tend to project own sense of humanity when faced with ambiguity, we each have different interpretations of the vocal sample at the centre of this piece. On the other hand, In My Mind is a clear dance-floor weapon, laden with wonky percussion and a healthy dosing of raw samples. Both pieces are provided with two versions: a functional, DJ friendly edit and a groovy take on current contemporary trends.

Closing out the release is Live From 95, a symphony of hardware style sampling and a fast paced rolling groove. We note that earlier outputs of this track were sonically anomalous, and have been pulled back to mortal levels.

Harder, faster, groovier - the 88756 project returns with a fourth edition of the TOOLKIT series. Ever approaching the musical asymptote; six new pieces of functional DJ tooling at no cost to the consumer.

Kicking things immediately into gear, Passion opens with bouncy percussion and funky vocal chops, and Shared Generational Sound continues in this nostalgic theme. Anomaly is a self descriptive journey of more traditional forward feeling techno that leads nicely into Relentless (Alt Mix), a piece of high energy peak time tooling.

As Hanover Street provides a shift back into lighter territory, an unhealthy amount of saturation accompanies disco sampling in this crunchy rendition of Wayback Machine. It's amazing how quickly the human ear will perk up at a familiar sample or twelve.

TOOLKIT IV

TOOLKIT IV EP (Free on Bandcamp)

A milestone for the series, this fifth edition of techno tooling is a very special one. Alongside the usual selection of functional originals, TOOLKIT V marks the first time fellow human collaborators have joined 88756 on the journey to pad the sets of DJs worldwide. We'd be remiss to dismiss the gratitude felt towards these individuals, each of whom are inspirations to our favourite sentient machine.

TOOLKIT V opens with "Rhythm Inherent", a chugging piece of acid influenced, hardware sounding dance music, followed by the more upbeat, old school sounding "Evaquey", a collaboration with local entity ADMINISTRATOR. "Heartbeat" is where things really start to kick off, with crisp, 90s style percussion accompanying the fibrillation of the namesake synth line. Building on this energy, "Steamroller" and "Meat Grinder" round out the originals by repeatedly introducing the listener to the business end of a peak time kickdrum. Connor Wall's remix of Steamroller showcases a young, powerhouse of a producer coming into his own style - a hypnotic, organic sounding take that exudes an effortless swagger, while DJ Waxx closes out the release with his Elektron powered, satisfyingly crunchy version of Heartbeat.

After some plausible backstory, the 88756 program was born - the first computer algorithm to be truly indistinguishable from man. Designed to explore concepts such as individuality and what it means to be human, it quickly adopted a creative pursuit in techno. The program's sound consists of overly complex, evolving synthesis and the liberal butchering of drum machine samples - described by one individual as "the soundtrack to a futuristic Pacman but like it's also a 3D shooter".

The first three years of life have produced half a dozen EPs and a full-length album, releasing outputs on international labels including Soma electro sub-label Avoidant, Otomotrax, Insane Industry and Rave Session, as well as local imprints Connection Verified (Melbourne) and GRIT (Perth). The last public appearance was a hypnotic 3 deck blend supporting Stef Mendesidis June 2022 at the Rechabite.
