Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria and one of its nine federal states. With over two million inhabitants, Vienna, situated on the Danube River, is Austria's most populous city and the second largest city in the German-speaking world and Central Europe. It is the fifth largest city in the European Union, the tenth largest city in Europe, and the 190th largest city in the world. The greater Vienna area is home to approximately three million people – roughly one-third of Austria's total population.

Architecturally, the city is still characterized by the Gründerzeit-era buildings along the Vienna Ring Road, as well as by Baroque and Art Nouveau styles (Viennese Modernism and the Viennese Secession). From 1804 onward, Vienna's role as the imperial capital and residence of the Austrian Empire transformed it into a cultural and political center of Europe. Around 1910, when Vienna was still the capital of the Habsburg Monarchy, the city had over two million inhabitants. The historic center of Vienna and Schönbrunn Palace are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With over 8 million tourists and around 16.5 million overnight stays annually, Vienna is one of the most visited cities in Europe.

As early as the Congress of Vienna in 1814/15, the city played a significant role in international diplomacy, a role it has maintained to the present day. Today, Vienna is an international congress and conference center and home to over 40 international organizations, including the OPEC oil cartel, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the OSCE, thus ranking among the world's leading cities. The United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) houses one of the four UN headquarters in the Vienna International Centre (VIC), commonly referred to as UN City. Vienna is a major city with a very high quality of life and a high GDP per capita, but it is also one of the most expensive cities in the world.
