Tash's Movement Recordings opens the new year by welcoming Weird Sounding Dude back to the label for his debut EP. As one of India's rising musical mavericks, Weird Sounding Dude has emerged from his country's electronic landscape as a premiere progressive house talent. Long a favourite of genre tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy J and Cid Inc, the Bangalore resident often touches on disparate themes and sounds, straddling the divide between intergalactic design and groove-centric hypnotism. With a career that now spans a decade, Weird Sounding Dude has compiled an impressive discography with standout releases via Anjunadeep, Hoomidaas, The Soundgarden and Sudbeat Music. Movement Recordings has also been a landing spot for the scene veteran, with a contribution to the label's 'GLBLMVMT3 - Exploring India' collection marking his debut in 2020, a project which would lead to a 2021 remix of Not Demure's 'Aifos'. Now, as 2023 begins to take shape, Weird Sounding Dude returns to Movement Recordings with a two-track showcase entitled 'Fallen Poet'.

The title selection finds Weird Sounding Dude composing with a strong sense of rhythm and groove. Beginning with a smooth pulse, its smoky resonance eventually reveals a backbone of monolithic beats and thunderous bass stabs. Instantly seductive, it's this muscular framework which provides the vehicle for panoramic textures and dissonant synth blasts to work their magic, ultimately resulting in a resounding dance floor escapade.

Meanwhile, the companion piece 'Lost Ark' lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship, as Weird Sounding Dude reaffirms his ability to tip a dancefloor over the edge. Mountainous grooves and clever rhythmic co-actions underpin a fascinating blend of striking chord stabs, balmy atmospherics and muted piano's, the latter of which provides a heartfelt interlude, before confidently returning to the groove for a heads down finale.

PREMIERE: Cream (PL) - Kaleidoscope (Dowden Remix) [If You Wait Music]

A new artist to grace the Particles roster, Francisco Jose Ricardo makes a stylish debut with his "Tongue & Groove" EP. Mentored by Bedrock resident and global superstar DJ, Nick Muir, the US resident now follows up on a pair of 2021 releases for Record Union with twin original tracks. Remixes come from Simos Tagias and Nick Muir himself.

The title track opener sees "Tongue & Groove" develop easily with metronomic beat and a filtered arpeggio framework. Blossoming with club-friendly prowess, a grooved bassline is perfectly entwined between heavy beat and ticking percussion as a glass motif heralds a new sonic phase. Intelligently placed chords provide an old school house vibe while a swathe of effects and subtle piano phrase combine in the second half to impressive effect. "Jones" continues the retro vibe as a Kraftwerk-esque synth line shines through a cadenced top-line that creates dancefloor energy via a dynamic rolling groove. Stereo-panned arpeggio and textured pads add to a rich sonic collage as the track pauses for breath at the 5-minute point before dropping back into a glorious melody-fuelled finale.

A legendary figure in the underground scene as part of the Bedrock outfit alongside long-time production partner, John Digweed, Nick Muir is the epitome of the global superstar DJ. A career that dates back over 30 years, Nick's solo work as producer and DJ has seen him travel the world, while more than 400 production credits sit proudly next to his name. A trio of remixes for Rick Pier O'Neil, Sebastian Sellares and Eric Lune have seen Nick feature on Proton Music between 2019-21 as he now debuts on Particles with a typically innovative and powerful interpretation of "Tongue & Groove". Replete with a plethora of magical production techniques and backspin DJ effect, Nick Muir's skill is to expertly sculpt a new melodic framework for familiar themes within Francisco's work to shine anew. With eloquent dancefloor know-how, the track builds through its phases to create an immaculate and expertly crafted interpretation.

Simos Tagias requires little in the way of introduction with 30 production credits on Proton Music and Particles. The early part of the Greek artist's career saw such EPs on the latter that included 2014's "Drunk State" and 2017's "Airlock", while remixes for Antrim in 2015 and Gaston Ponte in June 2022 are now followed by another typically impressive remix. Characterised by a powerful bassline groove and rolling top line cadence, the Simos Tagias remix of "Tongue & Groove" provides hypnotic dancefloor energy. A filtered arpeggio enters the fray appearing alongside a swell of additional motifs and familiar pulsating soundscapes at the breakdown, before hitting its straps once more in the latter stages, propelled forwards with hypnotic vibrancy.

Francisco Jose Ricardo - Tongue & Groove (Simos Tagias Remix)

A Particles debutant, Chris Cargo has been an influential figure in underground house for over two decades. Over 250 production credits are testament to this longevity with the UK artist seeing his music feature on the likes of Paul Thomas' UV, D-Formation's Beat Boutique and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, with a further half-century on his own If You Wait imprint. Now debuting on Particles, "Wide Eyed" is a low-slung groover that develops with easy rhythmic poise before subtle melodic overtones filter into sonic range. Luscious pads and grooved bassline add to the aural collage before a breakdown introduces a swathe of new elements that fizz to a rousing white-noise crescendo before dropping back into the gently pulsating rhythm of earlier movements. The result is a smooth and immaculate offering from the Chris Cargo studio.

Chris Domingo is another longstanding artist within the underground dance fraternity. Finding success in both solo guise and with former production partner, Mariner, the US artist has seen his music feature on a host of leading labels that include Songuara, 3rd Avenue and Stellar Fountain, while work for Particles included 2021's "Azimuth" and "Lose Control" EPs, before May 2022 saw the debut of his Domingo + moniker in collaboration with Eric Lune and "Sentimental Fool". Now returning to the label, the Domingo+ remix sees an intricate percussive top-line based on elements from "Wide Eyed" shine before a familiar bassline cadence also makes its presence felt. Introducing a new syncopated synth line adds depth and intensity to proceedings before the second half reveals a glorious and meandering synth line that provides a touch of class and emotion to the original.

Subandrio needs no introduction to the particles faithful. A renowned figure across his Sri Lankan home and far beyond its borders, his unmistakable production work has lit up a plethora of labels including Mango Alley, Perspectives Digital and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. A regular on both Proton labels, a quintet of remixes has seen him rework the likes of Andre Sobota, Juan Deminicis, Trilucid and Matter since a December 2015 Particles debut. Now returning to the label for the first time in 5 years, the Subandrio remix is a typically sumptuous affair with powerful rolling groove melded with the textured pads and melodic bed of Chris Cargo's original. Full of vibrancy and atmosphere at the breakdown, a superbly cadenced motif and rippling stepped arpeggio combine to create a memorable interpretation.

Including remixes from Subandrio and Domingo +, Chris Cargo is "Wide Eyed" with musical delight.
