Los Angeles house music label Boogie Basics unveils the new single from Chris Melzer, a DJ whose musical journey has seen him as a participant in the dance music scenes of Salt Lake City, Seattle, L.A., and Burning Man. His style involves a ‘simplicity of sounds’ and to ‘layer them to inspire an emotional reaction.’ With “The Method”, Chris puts this into practice, resulting in a searing peak time house music cut that walks the line between big room and deep house. The huge rhythm intro may deceive one into thinking the track is more pounding than it is … as the carefully sequenced melodic elements enter, the appeal of the cut for late night moments becomes clear. Gentle arpeggiations play over the driving, pulsing bass line and a plump drum track, while a dreamily modulated saxophone riff beckons dancers to the floor. A cool, effective breakdown featuring an inspiring spoken word section is also included, sure to give an electric dose of feel-good energy to the DJ’s set. Boogie Basics brings it home again.

Syntax Erik returns to famed Norwegian electronic music label Beatservice Records with the I Can Feel You EP, his latest exploration in dance music eclecticism. Real name Raymond Hansen, the producer is originally from Tromsø, but now lives in Oslo. In 1997 he released his debut EP as K.Y.D with a string of twelve inches following in 2000 / 2001 as a part of the duo Kyd & Kango (collected on the High Above CD on Beatservice). First donning the name Syntax Erik in 2002, Hansen released an EP with Rune Lindbæk’s Romklang label and remixed the likes of Mari Boine, Anneli Drecker, Flunk, and The Familiar under this moniker. Over the years he has maintained steady production efforts with personal tracks, many for his own pleasure.

The I Can Feel You EP is the second in a series of distinctive ‘from the vaults’ releases from Syntax Erik. It consists of three house-style tracks, each with touches of Norwegian techno flavor. The EP starts off with the banging dance floor frenzy of “Midnight Express” … a mindful layering of synth textures and balearic vocal phrases fully captivate over the cut’s ten minutes. Erik goes deep and dubby for “I Can Feel You”, a dark late-night track that proudly wears its experimental flourishes on its sleeve. “Blindness You Can’t Focus” is the third track, with its ambient intro and subdued techno rhythms leading into moody blankets of atmosphere and swirling melody. Lastly, Oslo-based producers De Fantastiske To (Paper, Omena, Truckfunk) round off the EP with their groovy magic on “Midnight Express”. Their remix adds a dash of funk to the beats and large helpings of growling bass and soaring arpeggiations. It’s a wild ride!

Roam Recordings label don JP Soul has revealed his latest single, the bay area beauty that is “You Want Her”. Described by the label as ‘big, burly, hypnotic, and sexy,’ the track showcases some heavy chord play that teases bits off the bass line, and a classic-sounding vocal that provides a deep hook. There’s plenty of bounce to go around, and “You Want Her” fully embraces a slinky after-hours vibe. Glasgow’s famed one man production unit The Revenge takes on the cut for a stripped down jacking remix that includes many of his characteristic touches while still showcasing the tawdry sounds of the original. Norwegian deep house label Bogota Records considers Ivaylo’s Future Past (The Remixes) the end of ‘phase one.’ The label has issued six fantastic releases, making some serious waves in the house music community with its signature lush, dreamy, rhythmic sound. This seventh issue from Bogota returns to the output of flagship artist Ivaylo, the Bulgaria-born DJ based in Oslo. Future Past (The Remixes) is notable, as the title unintentionally hints, in that it draws upon label tracks from previous releases, giving them new remixed interpretations laying out the direction of the label. An impressive cadre of house music talent from around the world is on board to supply these remixes, making this an essential release.

Let’s delve right into it. Dalminjo (Limestone Recordings, Papa Records) offers a sophisticated remix of “Forgotten”, featuring pleasant string lines and lovely tuned percussion. Famed Philadelphian Pete Moss (Ovum Records) brings a funky tech-house aesthetic to “Outlands”, with a solid bass and drum interplay perfectly tailored for the dance floor. Legendary Chicago house music don Johnny Fiasco (Klassik Fiasco) lays on the heavy swing for his interpretation of “Weight”, and takes things well into the deep zone with splashes of chiming pads and a touch of vocoder. Out of Bulgaria comes Ivaylo’s mates, the duo Sound Solutions (Adultempo Specialists) who blend swirling arpeggiations and ominous echoed synth stabs into their revision of “Shine”. Demarkus Lewis (Grin Music), the tall Texas house music veteran, slaps on some tough rhythms, some 303-ish lines, and a pulsing low end for a particularly beefy version of “Disquis”. Last, but certainly not least, Jay Tripwire (Tonality, Poker Flat) provides an evocative, sublimely building remix of “Cellar”, featuring clanging percussion, liquidy found sounds, filtered chords, and the hypnotic drum-play he’s known for.

Bogota Records knows the past, and repeating quality like this in the future is a foregone conclusion. Stay tuned to hear what other gems the label and Ivaylo have in store …

Lucky Sun Recordings return with the imprint’s fifth release, the In Time and Place EP from Glasgow-based producer James Benedict. On the heels of recent hot releases on Savoir Faire Musique, House Trip Recordings, What Happens, and Delve Deeper Recordings, James brings the heat with these three new original tracks. “In Time and Place” delivers jerky house beats, spliced vox, and James’s signature deep chords. “Midnight At Riverside” follows with punchy drums and percussion alongside hypnotic synths and pads. “Rockabeat” is a slightly more psychedelic affair featuring swung, staccato synths, and potent drums and bass adding to a driving feel that just keeps building.

The first remix in the package comes from Alvaro Hylander (DeepWit Recordings) who, in remixing “Rockabeat”, contributes a lovely piece of deep house … his chords and bass line are to die for and there’s a cheeky broken beat-esque middle section. Next, “Midnight at Riverside” is remixed by Nico Mendez (Underground Sounds / UM Records) who gets a bit ‘out there’ with shuffling beats, deep chords, and and an atmospheric breakdown. Top notch all around.

San Francisco disco warriors Anthony Mansfield and JP Soul are triumphant after the success of the Ode To Moulton EP, and their collaboration continues to yield funky fruit, most recently with the top track “Everything Is Real.” No laurel-resting for these two … they’ve already bounced back with a brand new release for Roam Recordings, the tauntingly titled Watchu Know About Acid? EP. 303-fueled mischief abounds as the pair fries circuit boards and brain cells alike with three tracks firmly planted in acid house territory. The title track launches the release, grooving to a sexy beat as drum machines and acid lines conspire with a refreshingly human feel. “Two Girlfriends” follows, getting down and gritty into a rhythmic, psychedelic romp driven by an insistent and heavy bass synth pulse. “Time-lapse” closes out the proceedings, delving deeper into a moody hypnotic world of distorted and tripped-out sounds. These three cuts all masterfully weave together into a deep and exquisite acid journey … Roam Recordings certainly knows its acid.

Muskox Records label boss Alistair Albrecht has impressively stepped up to the plate with the imprint’s newest single, “Late Night”. Alistair’s impressive discography and experience ‘in the trenches’ show through in this impeccable deep house production, lovingly crafted with layers of melody and emotion. Featuring a smooth, jazzy interplay between piano and trumpet, the track’s deep bass bounce and crisp rhythms guide the dance floor on a distinctive, musical journey. The cut has already made its debut on Nicky Romero’s radio show, been re-edited by Bob Sinclair, and supported by Nick Warren, Mousse T, Goldfish, Mastiksoul, and Sonny Fodera. Now the chance has arrived to hear what the hype is about.

For the remixes, Alistair has first enlisted his good friend and Dutch DJ legend Dennis Christopher (Spinnin’ Records) who delivers a lush and dubby treatment that is both ready for the beach as well as an after-hours underground affair. Sleek and sophisticated, Dennis’s remix features a subtle female vocal and flowing synths, and effectively highlights repeated riffs from the original’s trumpet. The second rework comes from new Muskox signings Svenson Music & To.ne who use more of the original’s elements, but in a gorgeous ‘chill out’ context. A galloping hi-hat pattern guides the rhythm while building layers of electronic textures envelope the piano and horn parts. All in all, these tracks make for a brilliant, well-rounded single and another ‘feather in the cap’ for Muskox Records and Alistair Albrecht.

Wind Horse Records’ ‘east meets west’ aesthetic fuels its latest release, as the India-based deep house imprint presents the newly formed London duo The Ritual. Made up of seasoned producer Matt Prehn (of Large Music, i! Records, Different Attitudes, and his own label, Oh So Coy) and vocalist / producer Dee Griffin (Large Music, Different Attitudes), The Ritual aims to be a creative ensemble working to push the boundaries of deep house. Serving as the pair’s debut release, “Letting Go” certainly sets this stage with its shimmering floor appeal. Crisp, groovy rhythms and flowing, filtered chords provide the base of the track, while warm pad swells, melodic plucks, and dreamy found sounds embellish its journey. The result is a mesmerizing after-hours moment, suited for the deepest of DJs and the most underground of nightclubs. 

A quartet of distinctive remixes send “Letting Go” floating off in new directions. Glasgow’s JFunc is first, producing a tough version that rolls with deep bass, spacious hits, and a masterfully constructed build. Kartech, coming of his recent “Larrisa” single for Wind Horse, follows with a beguiling remix, drawing the listener into its luscious breakdown soundscape filled with expressive sound design. Next, Priyesh Patil, also no stranger to fans of the Wind Horse label, delivers a dream-like revision that features rhythmically intertwining elements and splashes of echo effects throughout. Farhan Rehman then closes out this trio of Indian remixers, powering his version with warm sub-bass, hypnotic synth sequences, and smooth layers of pads. All these remixes show a melodic acumen, giving “Letting Go”, as a whole, much more depth than the usual house music single. It’s yet another tour de force for Wind Horse Records.

Focusing on the soulful and inspirational facets of house music, the production duo of Dimitri Craven and Jerry Andrews – collectively known as Zona – have unveiled “Never Forget”, the latest single taken from the album Peace, Love and Understanding. This eclectic combo, based in Los Angeles, pushes a ‘live’ deep house style and has had previous acclaimed releases on Good For You Records, Kapa, and House Tribe Records. 70x7 Records is Zona’s own imprint, and it plays host to the alluring “Never Forget”. 

Featuring regular collaborator Valerie Moise on vocals, Greg Brown on vibraphone, and the pounding surge of Greg Velasquez’s percussion, “Never Forget” is soulful house at its best, accented with touches of acid jazz and deep disco. The song’s lyrics send best wishes to a lost love as expressive layers of keys, vibes, and snappy rhythms – all buoyed by a super funky bass line – win over the most resistant of dance floors. 

The remixes are led by the ‘super collaboration’ of Lenny RX, Eric Kupper, and Kenny Summit who deliver a breezy and soothing remix in a classic late night New York soulful style. The percussion-driven beat is gentle but solid, and warm pads and melodic synth leads accompany Valerie’s voice with lovely sophistication. Next up, Sidney Perry, who runs the Qubonix label and is an up-and-coming producer on the LA house scene, provides an effective, stripped-down version of “Never Forget”. Jazzy chords tightly follow the vocal melody, creating an atmosphere that’s dreamy and hypnotic. There’s also a Qubonix dub mix which highlights the vibraphone and pulls phrases from Valerie’s vocal … pure deep house magic. The final remix comes from Paul Andrew, another DJ based in the City of Angels, and it’s a delightful disco-tinged version featuring dubby effects through its distinctive sound, while maintaining the original’s powerful bass line and percussion. San Francisco resident Jeffrey Tice finds art and inspiration in unexpected places, whether it’s gazing on the renegade street art of his hometown or crafting homages to his childhood heroes through his moniker Copy Correct. “Where Do You Go?” is a tale laden with a sentimental cast of memories and dreams and the intersection of warm experiences and a yearning to reach greater heights of happiness. The intro alone is a pensive reminder of soft autumn stillness with a steady build into more inviting dance floor material. Introducing the remixes, longtime house music veteran and Jacob London cast member Hanssen returns to the label to offer his unique blend of synthetic mastery and forward thinking tech edge to deliver a blend of perfected pads and driving arpeggios. Harmonious Discord mainstay Vital next ensures that the late night hours are covered with a techy rework, offering a more stripped down formula than the deeper original. Patsada Records has aimed their house music radar at Sofia, Bulgaria to discover up-and-coming producer Darko Janevski. Born in Macedonia, Darko has previously provided his funky brand of house music for Epoque Music Electronic and on a number of compilations, and these two new cuts for Patsada truly signal a talent on the rise. “Doing It” is a classy house number, building hypnotically over its nearly eight minutes with sharp, rhythmic sounds and filtered vocal loops. This one is perfect for that peak moment in a long after-hours set. “Specimen” follows, delivering a fresh track on a jazzy tip. The drums have a good bit of swing, and a bouncing bass line creates forward motion. Cool chords and vocal snippets further help place the cut firmly in the DJ’s queue. As a bonus, Patsada’s Miss Mee is on hand for a slammin’ remix of “Specimen”, adding big stabs and raising the tempo just a tad. Two tracks from Soulspace’s brilliant and highly acclaimed self-titled album have received the remix treatment, resulting in a package of compelling collaborations from across India’s electronic music sphere. This 2014 album on Wind Horse Records from Soulspace – AKA New Delhi’s Vishnu PS – captivated listeners from the worlds of deep house, ‘chill out’, and abstract electronica and the remixed single also appeals across this spectrum. Soulspace has taken album cuts “C’est La Vie” and “You” and placed them into the hands of a variety of Indian producers, including those working outside of deep house for a more eclectic, ‘alternative’ direction. 

The emotive track “You” receives a trio of versions, led by a gentle downtempo interpretation from Mumbai’s Sandunes. The project of Sanaya Ardeshir, Sandunes wraps “You” in complex breakbeat rhythms and clever manipulations of the original’s trademark vocal phrase. The Sine Painter (comprised of the Bangalore-based Jayanth Ramachandra) arrives next, giving the track a forlorn four-on-the-four treatment, including echoey plucked melodies for an exotic effect. When Pandas Attack then provide the third remix of “You”, enveloping the track in thick pads and chiming tones, as breezy downbeat drums and stereo-swirling vocal snippets combine in a mesmerizing manner. 

Soulspace’s “C’est La Vie” also receives the remix treatment, earning a pair of pleasantly diverse versions. Bangalore DJ duo Audio Units – familiar to followers of Wind Horse Records – have revealed a lush deep house revision of Soulspace’s track. It features a bouncing, buzzy bass line and melodic arpeggiations alongside a flurry of atmospheric treatments. Late night bliss. Rohan Ramanna, known here as ROH, next reinterprets “C’est La Vie” as a cinematic downtempo soundscape, masterfully capturing a dreamy feeling with layers of sparkling sound and an insistent, slow motion rhythm. This one demands to be listened to on headphones. 

These remixes of “C’est La Vie” and “You” show Wind Horse Records moving into new and exciting directions while embracing more diverse players in India’s burgeoning electronic music scene. Stay tuned for what most certainly will be fascinating developments in the near future.

Karmaloft Music closes out the year with a fantastic double A-side single from Munich-based sound engineer Tom Appl. Tom’s career as a DJ dates back to the early ’90s with the sounds of tech, deep, and melody-infused house music. As a producer he has previously created productions and remixes under the pseudonym Fruitroom, and has frequently appeared on Karmaloft with acclaimed singles and remixes. “Something About” and “Bachversuche” further advance his sleek sound, providing a pair of floor-effective deep house cuts that blend in a number of satisfying tech elements. 

“Something About” opens the single with a gentle bell-like melody before launching a tough and intricate rhythm section. A growling bass tone and thick stabs enter, and then a female voice speaks: “There’s something about your smile … and the way you move when you’re on the dance floor.” This all combines in a slightly moody fashion, creating a strongly melodic track well-suited for intimate after hours moments. “Bachversuche” follows, once again introducing a pattern of bells much like its predecessor. The resemblance is quickly swept away by a memorable electric piano line and some smart, kinetic percussion accents. The cut builds steadily, further showcasing Tom’s penchant for deftly fusing rhythmic arrangements and striking melodic sequences.

Devon Dunaway", “Devil’s Backbone” and “Spring (Alternate Mix)” – and a remix of “Clear To Me (It’s Ovah) feat. Devon Dunaway” coming from Chicago’s own house music maestro Doc Link.

“Clear To Me” is W. Jeremy’s first full vocal production and it’s a sweet throwback to NJ piano vocal house. The collaboration between Jeremy and vocalist Devon Dunaway started when he sent the track to Dunaway asking if he could find someone to remix the then instrumental track. Dunaway’s response was that he had lyrics that would fit the music perfectly, and the song was born. Dunaway’s singing is reminiscent of vocal house legends Colonel Abrams, Robert Owens, and Aaron-Carl, and takes inspiration from gospel, jazz, ’70s soul, R&B, post-punk, and art-rock. Perhaps best known for his searing collaborations with tripped-out techno-house guru Floppy Sounds on “City For Sale” and “Those Voices” – both issued on Wave Music – Dunaway has also worked with acclaimed Danish downtempo artist Ganga, Finnish tech-house masters Roberto Rodriguez and Mr. A, “hard-dark-and-tribal soul” heavyweight Tedd Patterson, and Mercury Prize-nominated electronic alt-pop group, Bat For Lashes. The music is clearly rooted in early ’90s NJ piano house, almost an “ode to” the records that were out at the time on Strictly Rhythm, Easy Street, and Movin’ Records.

Hailing from Chicago and inspired by the legendary club sets of Farley “Jackmaster” Funk and Ron Hardy, Doc Link inevitably launched his own DJ career in 1987, his first professional DJ gig happening in 1989 and then finally making music in 1994. Doc launched Liberate Recordings with sometimes production partner Eman in 2007. Liberate boasts 107 releases with artists such as Roy Davis, Jr., Stephanie Cooke, Hanna Hais, Angel-A, Rainy Payne, Rescue Poetix, Diana Waite, Veronique, Malik Alston, Randy Muller, Sheree Hicks, MJ White, Marissa Guzman, and Eman. Doc has had his own releases on Defected, Hi-Rise, King Street, Transport, Distant Music, Nite Grooves, Tony Records, and Farris Wheel. Doc Link’s Eyes Wide Open Mix is a beautiful, bumping, stripped-down version of the original lush track. He incorporates his own trumpet hook to compliment the synth hits, which coincides with the rhythm of the beat.

The second and third tracks, “Devil’s Backbone” and “Spring (Alternate Mix)”, are intended for sheer listening pleasure. Both tracks delve deep into the electronic disco soundscape. Classic drums and ’80s synths drive “Devil’s Backbone”, giving it a darker feel. At the other end of the spectrum is “Spring (Alternate Mix)”, which is a take on W. Jeremy’s “Spring” track released earlier this year. With its bright keys and acid elements, it is a playful and light-hearted track.

Green Gorilla Lounge returns to the fray with a top tier set of remixes of “City Lights”, a cool song by acclaimed San Francisco-based indie band NRVS LVRS. “City Lights” was the first single off The Golden West, NRVS LVRS’s debut album released earlier this year. The powers-that-be at Green Gorilla headquarters fell in love with the song and quickly envisioned a plan for more dance floor-oriented interpretations. Fellow conspirators Sleight of Hands, Pezzner, Tone of Arc, and the duo of Lucas Hulan & Petr Braun were enlisted, and this outstanding release is the result. 

GGL’s in-house heroes Sleight of Hands – made up of DJ M3 and Phil Collis – provide the first version, which is filled with big stomping beats and dirty bass lines and utilizes the original’s vocal in a particularly moody manner. This one’s a late night monster. Seattle’s Pezzner (Freerange, Systematic) is up next, and his remix will certainly satisfy all the Pezz-heads out there. Pezzner’s main mix and dub both feature the creative rhythmic high jinks and clearly produced sonics that this masterful tunesmith is known for. Tone of Arc, a quickly rising project formed by Derrick Boyd AKA Dead Seal, delivers a cinematic treatment peppered with distinctive sound design moments and cavernous percussion blasts over its entrancing deep house foundation. Czech producers Lucas Hulan & Petr Braun (Nightphunk Recordings) then close things out with a shimmering rework that samples and manipulates the vocal while it provides spaced-out aural scenery for the dance floor.

The latest release on respected Seattle house music imprint Uniting Souls features New York house music legend Onionz. Label founder Ramiro goes way back with Onionz, with the two becoming friends in San Francisco during the heyday of the ’90s scene. This EP Is a reunion of sorts, rekindling the creative energies shared between these two house music pioneers for almost two decades.

Onionz’s contribution is the cosmically titled “Space Slave” – perhaps a reference to a certain metal-bikini’d intergalactic princess? – and it’s a sublime excursion into beat-driven deep tech house. The track builds masterfully over its seven minutes, with echoed arpeggiations and groovy rhythmic elements pulsing in and out of the mix. “Space Slave” is then punctuated by the emergence of a moody, psychedelic synth melody at its peak, evoking the feeling of space travel via the dance floor.

The release also unites vibes from coast to coast, with remixers from three different corners of the US. Seattle’s Pezzner opens up proceedings with a haunting feel, displaying his expert combination of beats and atmospheric textures. Pezzner has also supplied a second version of his mix, featuring a subtle shuffle at a slightly speedier tempo. Next up is Los Angeles producer duo Knoe1 and Jordan Strong (a Uniting Souls resident since 1998) delivering a chugging warehouse vibed rework perfectly suited for the after hours. Brian Busto, of Florida’s Serious Soul crew, then turns in a dark-as-night remix of “Space Slave”, filled with throbbing bass, ominous soundscapes, and crisp machine rhythms. The release closes with San Diego’s Jason Tokita whose hypnotic treatment of the track goes deep, and includes some dialogue snippets captured from distant orbit.

Wind Horse Records returns to the roots of the label with Hamza’s worldly new single “Thar”. Since founding Wind Horse over six years ago Hamza has released a number of expressive singles for his growing imprint, as well as on the likes of Colour and Pitch, Freizeitglauben Berlin, Grouper, and Savoir Faire Musique. The foundation of Hamza’s ‘modus operandi’ has been the combination of western and eastern sounds, resulting in a timeless melding of deep house with global instrumentation such as those found in his native India. The two originals on this single certainly display this aesthetic, creating dance floor moments with a distinctive amount of depth. 

“Thar” is named after a desert in the Rajasthan state of India, known as a place inhabited by gypsies. These same gypsies travelled south to Spain and influenced the flamenco sound, as referenced in the track. Hamza has been playing with Rajasthani gypsy musicians for many years, and “Thar” stands as a shining example of the fusion of their traditional sounds with deep house. Touching on a different spot in the world, the b-side track “Afro Turk” is inspired by Turkey and Hamza’s travels to Istanbul. The rhythm maintains an African influence which inspires the title. Exotic instrumentation and intriguing environmental sounds melt over the layers of percussion and low, growling bass line. The gorgeous extended breakdown could soundtrack a leisurely stroll through the famous Grand Bazaar. 

The second half of the single presents a trio of fantastic remixes of “Thar” by members of the extended Wind Horse family. Miami’s Juan Mejia (Dutchie Music) is first, delivering a cool and bouncy rendition that balances the dramatic strums with gentle piano notes, all underpinned by some serious house beats. The New Delhi-based Oma is next, adding a touch of darkness to the proceedings. A pulsing low end and a clicky rhythm track propel the track’s vision as the dream-like sonic space is wrapped in the more exotic textures from the original. Stalvart John, a DJ / producer from Bangalore, closes out the single with a sparse, dubbier treatment of “Thar.” Anchored by a crisp four-on-the-floor, this remix is a heady journey, taking the listener to quite a few different places within its hypnotic seven and a half minutes.
