PIFF Records welcomes Venice-based producers Nicola Brusegan and Steve Hammer to the label on their latest release, Different Gear EP.

Both producers have a rich history of collaborations, sharing releases on a multitude of labels in recent years. Despite not sharing production duties on any individual track on this release, their musical styles seamlessly blend together to construct a rich sonic tapestry traversing vibrant deep house and soulful dub techno.

The first four tracks on the EP will be available on both vinyl and in digital formats. Steve Hammer offers a simple-yet-raw bassline paired with crisp 808 percussion and dreamlike pads on Black Jack, in contrast with the more upbeat and playful Sadiq. Magic Colour, courtesy of Nicola Brusegan, revolves around a thunderous pumping bassline and stripped-back drums, whilst The River is centred around dubbed-out chords which keep pushing the track forwards.

A plethora of 90s-infused soundscapes continue throughout the final five tracks of the release, available exclusively in digital formats. Highlights include the lively serotonin-drenched melody of We Can Do It, and the glitchy arpeggio of Place 4 (both provided by Steve Hammer), alongside Nicola Brusegan airy pads and hypnotic bassline on XX33 and the Chicago-style vocal sample of Naked.

Rounding off the release with Look Inside Me, Nicola Brusegan applies melodic pads and shuffling drums to create a hazy track available for free download for buyers of the digital EP.

Over the course of 9 tracks, the pair of Venetian producers express the soulful grooves of 90s house through refreshingly modern production standards.

Sunday traditions fuel the excitement of the new week and cool down the intensity of the passing week. There’s room for foolishness in the company of two music lovers who constantly anticipate new discoveries. After all, it’s spontaneity that makes any friendship thrive. A fictional fighter jet flies in the middle of the shopping mall, performing aerobatics maneuvers and aerial refueling. As fuel, any standard ingredients for home cooked meals will do. Turning a grocery shopping trip into an actual quest is the perfect way to distract yourself from pressing matters. We all know that even record digging can be tedious – luckily, it won’t be for long!

– Is it true that music is worse on an empty stomach?
– I don't know, Plate! It's ridiculous how you have such an appetite.
– Why don't we have a barbecue when we get back and listen to the new Chippy Chaser's Various Artists?
– I’m up to it!

This was the first track of what resulted in a rapid run of producing 18 tracks in 3 weeks, all under the GG project file.

I made this whilst renting a room for £500 a month, all bills included in Hainault. That particular room is where my life started to turn around. I was doing well at work and although I was still partying a lot, progress was happening in my life.

The EBM-indebted techno funk of James Welsh’s ‘Thread’ re-emerges from the industrial fog, evolved into three outstanding remixes by a trio of rising and established artists. Radio Slave adds shuddering percussion and filter to create an edit for devastating dancefloor effect. Lobster Theremin and Workshop alumni Ozel AB reimagines the track as an ethereal rave landscape, while FC Kahuna return to deliver a playful, digital-only take that recently featured as Lauren Laverne’s ‘Headphone Highlight’ on BBC 6Music.

As the last sliver of the sun disappeared behind the mountains a bitter cold pierced the air sending shivers through the town. They didn't see much sun here; the days were short and the nights continued to be long, cold and dark. Despite this reality those who lived there remained full of hope. Every day they dreamed of a perfect place in which they could exist, somewhere far from the place they knew as home. A utopian paradise amidst the darkness of the real world.

The second release from freshly founded imprint Dom Trojga continues their mission to represent Eastern Europe's rich underground music scene. The V/A entitled Domownicy Różnoracy Cz. 1 brings together artists from Poland and Ukraine including designer and sound artist Poly Chain, a collaboration between Ukrainian synth wizard Bejenec and Jaxe who launched the imprint, rounded off with two tracks from Łódź producer SLG and label head Eltron, who together perform as Seltron 400. SLG's track is our pick, which he describes as his waking dream about Boards of Canada and Drexciya collaborating, as well as a reflection on the need for more utopian music in today's dystopian world.
