Legendary resident of the Cocoricò (Riccione, Italy), club that he has launch in the 1990, Cirillo is one of the best representatives of the Italian techno sound. In more than 30 years his career has taken him around the world travelling side by side with the biggest names in terms of techno music. He has participated in some of the most infamous musical events including Love Parade, Ravecity, NRG, Evolution, Mayday, Universe, Love Nation, Union Rave and Odissey. He is also a resident DJ of Circoloco at DC10 and it’s a big pleasure to welcome him on the channel with this fantastic podcast recorded in December 2023 !

▶︎ What motivates you to compose on hardware?
Working with hardware is amazing! If you listen to many of the productions of the 90s and 80s, there is no perfect programming or automating in the same sense that a modern computer can do. The machines are played as instruments and then they are recorded - what’s done is done. You use your hands to craft the sound, like Jeff Mills active and live approach to the 909, that’s what I mean

I attached that notion to what I do today - which also enabled me to create and motivate very minimalistic productions. Not minimalistic in the sense of clean soundscapes, but in the amount of sounding instruments that are going on throughout the sequences all crafted from scratch. I record on two to three mono channels and I grown to love the method of stepping right into the emotion of the track. To hear the soul of the sequence the very second you play it. In the midst of affairs so to speak.

The biggest inspiration from the early days of techno thus lies in how the different sounds move together, what two hands can do in the moment. I’m not m afraid of making things obscure or monotone - that is part of the process. About three years ago I discarded everything I made with my computer and started this journey by wanting to make new sounds with mostly the same equipment every day. It took a great deal of practice but it is has been very rewarding. I think everyone should try it at least!

▶︎ And what’s your set up as a DJ ?
When I started to DJ I had two CD players (CDJ 800 Mk2), which I bought just a couple of months after I turned 18. Shortly after I got my Technics 1200 really cheap and have been moving between vinyl and digital since. At the moment I play digitally, although I’m an avid vinyl collector and make sure to really use the records from the 90s in my repertoire. I play on three players to be able to continuously cue one track ahead.

▶︎ What inspires you most about the 90s?
The idea of techno growing as the music of the future! Although not only the music, but also the ideas of Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance, and Drexciya. All the interpretations of the music and the incredible communities and influences that grew out of the era. What’s not to love!

When the future was envisioned at the time when techno was being invented, the idea was probably different from what it might be when thought of today. I guess it’s possible to apply the idea of us being at the end of that future or in the beginning of the next future. Wherever we’re at now, we’re all headed into either something fantastic or something tragic, haha. But as far as techno is concerned, I myself really want to stick to associating it as a forward thinking genre. I feel that it’s also suited for me to soundtrack the urban decay we have through our current structures in society. Maybe a bit like Detroits economic decline back then - I cannot know!

▶︎ Do you think the techno tracks from 30 years ago are still relevant today?
They are the most relevant bar none if you ask me. If you don’t look back on how techno started in Detroit, it will be hard to motivate modern interpretations of it today. If it wasn’t for inventors like Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson we wouldn’t be where we are with this genre. They deserve respect, as well as the waves of techno that later came after them. The way techno was made 30+ years is an archetype.
