Many people would agree that corporations have undue influence over our democracies. But exactly how this influence is exerted is tricky to work out - and that is by design. Behind innocuous-sounding acronyms and worthy-sounding trade agreements are the real cogs that allow the global corporate machine to corrupt societies. Our guest this week Matt Kennard has spent the last two years investigating these cogs.

In his new book, ‘Silent Coup’, he and co-author Claire Provost relay shocking examples of how corporations exert, expand and consolidate control over the lives of practically everyone in the world.

Palestinian writer and academic Leila Farsakh joins the show to talk about the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict and the parallels Leila sees between  the current situation and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. We also talked about the revival of the idea of the one state solution and why Leila believes a two-state resolution to the conflict is no longer feasible. In the interview we touch on Leila's article in The London Review of Books, ‘The Refugee Problem’ and on her book, 'Rethinking Statehood in Palestine: Self-determination beyond Partition'.

With many thanks to the Riot Ensemble for their help in realising this project: Ausiàs Garrigos (clarinet), Andy Connington (trombone), David Royo (percussion), Fontane Liang (harp), Neil Georgeson (piano), Louise McMonagle (cello) and Aaron Holloway-Nahum (conductor).

The piece is based on the resonant frequencies of Maeshowe, an ancient burial chamber on the Scottish island of Orkney. The frequencies were extracted from the acoustic impulse response and converted from Hz to 12tone equally tempered pitches with cent deviations. The frequencies are played exactly as sine tones and approximated by the instruments in various ways.
