“Tome of Stars” is a 100 sonnet journey, equal parts art, therapy journal, and exorcism, both a celebration and an elegy, a single narrative arc tracing the birth and death of a relationship. The opening section of “Tome of Stars”, titled “Item 1: Anthesis”, comprises 21 poems that chronicle the emergence and flowering of a romantic relationship, structured around the botanical metaphor of anthesis, the period during which a flower blooms. 

This poem explores the playful, seductive tension in the developing relationship between the poet and the beloved, filtered through the metaphor of a Bharatanatyam dancer performing a javali, a genre of dance often associated with flirtation, teasing, and longing. The sonnet moves between observing an imagined, stylized performance and reflecting on the real-life emotional choreography, where expressions of desire, jealousy, and ownership are articulated with a similar subtlety and rhythm. The poem mirrors the qualities of a javali itself, suggestive but contained, graceful yet emotionally potent, and traces how such gestures, both artistic and personal, can disarm and animate.

The choreography then flirted wiles—
Coy narthaki, she winks her many eyes.
“I’d like to bite,” you teased me with a smile,
“And leave my mark.” Your face took sober guise.

She hops and skips, and spins, and hides her face,
Grin peeking over shoulders slightly bent.
“I want to own you.” Jealousy embraced;
You giggled breath like fire heaven sent.

The dance, a rhythm ripe with whispered charms,
Flows back and forth in love’s elusive flight.
One thousand gestures, prayed with open arms—
You shook me still, a puppet in your light.

She stopped, sublime and sensual her pose,
While drumbeats of my quickened breath arose.
