‘Astral Dawn’ is the first release from the upcoming Kindred Souls album. It is also the first official release for any of the 150 songs Adrian has received in medicine ceremonies and sacred song circles over the past 20 years. Although he has in this time released 10 highly polished albums of instrumental music for shakuhachi and ensemble, it is on this track that Adrian introduces us for the first time to another side of his musical soul - singing, playing guitar and sharing his simple heartfelt lyrics in a musical prayer for peace. 
 
Combining stunning guitar melodies with floating vocal harmonies, ‘Astral Dawn’ is an uplifting piece of folk music with a lyrical message about staying positive in troubled times:

‘Astral Dawn’ features Adrian with the beautiful voices of Ayla Schafer and Susie Ro, the glittering sounds of the African kora, played by Ravi Freeman, the bubbling rhythms of the Indian dholak drum played by Arjun Magee, and by the sonorous tones of leading jazz double bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado.

The Kindred Souls album features international musicians from five continents - musicians that Adrian has encountered and collaborated with on his travels around the world. Musicians like him who have been drawn to all forms of music from various traditions and cultures, and that have been called to play instruments from outside their own native cultures.

This is the first of a serie of singles from the Upcoming Album "Trust in the Path".

"This track includes an original musical setting of the traditional Tibetan mantra for the Medicine Buddha, together with new lyrics in English and Brazilian Portuguese. It features the Japanese Zen shakuhachi flute. The song was written after a powerful meditation ceremony in Brazil that led to inspirational insights into the healing power of this Tibetan mantra and of its relevance for our contemporary world. Medicine Buddha is the blue Buddha, representing the healing radiance of lapis-lazuli."

Kokuzo

Kokûzō is regarded as one of the great Bodhisattvas. His name can be translated as "boundless space treasury" as his wisdom is said to be boundless as space itself. Kokûzô represents the great wisdom of the Buddha that exists throughout the entire universe, and he has the virtue of enabling those who chant his mantra to obtain the illuminated wisdom of the Buddha. He is known as the guardian of the purity of infinite space. His mantra is sung here in Japanese:

The moment when I received the melody for this mantra stands out for me as the moment when the oriental traditions I had been immersed in for many years began to merge with the medicine songs I had channeled during years I spent living in Brazil. ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ is the quintessential Buddhist mantra. Some monks spend their entire lives chanting it. In essence a simple homage to the miraculous beauty of the lotus flower, it can be loosely translated as ‘Praise to the Jewel in Heart of the Lotus”. Considered as the nectar of all the spiritual teachings of the Buddha, chanting or singing this mantra is seen as a way of entering fully into the compassionate space of the heart.

The lotus flower is a poignant reminder that we can flourish in spite of, or maybe even because of, darkness and struggle. Just like the lotus we too have the ability to rise from the mud, to bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world.” 	Thich Nhat Hanh

Wings In flight

A new setting of the traditional Tibetan mantra for Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha. The mantra is given a fresh melodic interpretation, together with original lyric verses that give depth and context to the healing intentions of the mantra.

Bhaisajyaguru is known as the Blue Buddha, his skin is lapis lazuli blue - the archetypal colour of healing. In his left hand he holds a bowl of healing nectar, and in his right a medicine plant. As such he is considered a guardian spirit for all those on the plant spirit medicine path. His mantra is a profound prayer for the release of suffering in all sentient beings. 

“I started the recording process for this track with a simple piano part, and to that was added a beautiful string quartet arrangement composed by Misha Mullov-Abbado, and the mellifluous bass tones of Antonio Moscato. The crystalline purity of Lua Maria’s voice together with the evocative tones of the Zen shakuhachi flute complete the soundscape.“

Bhaisajyaguru - Medicine Buddha

A new musical setting of the ancient Vedic Gayatri mantra with fresh English lyrics.

An international collaboration bringing together singers and musicians from Norway, Brazil, Australia, UK and Italy.

The Gayatri mantra comes from the Rig Veda, composed more than 3000 years ago. The mantra is an expression of gratitude and wonder for the powers of transformation, growth and illumination given by the Sun.

The English lyrics by Adrian were inspired by the poem “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Dylan Thomas.

As Adrian remembers: “As these words ran through my head, I remembered all the soft, calm energies of the zen shakuhachi flute I had been playing for years, and the teachings associated with it, and from that image the words of the poem transformed into a new verse.

Musically the song is a collaboration between Adrian, the renowned Norwegian singer Helene Bøksle, and the Australian singer and sound healer Darpan.

Adrian and Darpan met on the island sanctuary of K’gari on the south-eastern coast of Australia during a vision quest, and subsequently came to perform and record music together, including Adrian’s reworking of Darpan’s song Peace Awakening, which appeared on the Kindred Souls album in 2021. On this new track their voices blend seamlessly, taking it in turns to take the lead voice as the song gently unfolds to its soaring finale.

Helene Bøksle comes from the fjords and mountains of Norway. She has released nine solo albums and is well-known throughout Norway for the unique, ethereal qualities of her voice, and for her songs that combine Scandinavian tales and landscapes with modern impulses.

Adrian met Helene through his studio work in Oslo, and invited her to take part in this project. She contributes a stunning vocal part to the song, bringing it to an epic climax with a keening vocal solo that seems to evoke ancient Nordic spirits against the backdrop of the chanted Mantra.

In February 2018 I travelled to Australia for the first time, where I met a sweet soul, a fellow musical traveller, by the name of Amir Paiss. Amir plays the Persian santur and he was co- founder of the internationally acclaimed Hebrew-Arab world music ensemble SHEVA.
Amir and I played an impromptu evening of music together at a house concert in Byron, then a few days later we decided to meet late at night to make an outdoor recording, taking advantage of the balmy, warm evening. We set up some mics in Amir’s beautiful hillside garden under a starry sky. There was no audience - just the moon, the stillness of the trees and the sounds of the night ...the chirupping of the insects in the background adding another dimension as they seem to weave into the music. We played deep into the night, and from those recordings come these two tracks River of Stars and Isra, which is a Sufi term for the supersensible inter-dimensional travel by night.

Dedication:
Recently a friend of ours, still a teenager, dies under tragic circumstances. This has caused shockwaves through our extended community. His mother is a very dear friend of ours, and she in turn is deeply beloved by many as a wise and compassionate woman. In the midst of this tragedy I'd like to dedicate the piece 'River of Stars' for Arro, Fiona, Aloha and all those in need of some stillness and peace in this dark night of the soul.

Lotus Cura

I am the Light of the Forest (La Luz del Bosque)

A lone Nightingale singing his heart out to the night, accompanied by a Shakuhachi Flute and a Shruti Box.

In May I had the privilege of taking part once again in the Singing with Nightingale' series with Sam Lee. This time in the deep of the night in Highnam Woods, Gloucestershire. Only the sound of my Shakuhachi with Sam's shruti box and a lone nightingale singing his heart out to the night ... I had an extraordinary experience - the more I played with the song of this enchanting bird, the more time seemed to slow down, and the melodic phrases seemed to reveal their inner intricacy in a way that felt like an initiation into the inner kingdom of the nightingale, and then, through him and his song, as a portal into the inner world of nature herself and the very fabric of life. It was an almost shamanic feeling of penetrating the veil of existence, the dimension of melody as metaphor for something beyond sound, in the world of spirit ... and so much information coming through in the silences between the notes ... a truly mystical experience.
