Azli, the sophomore full-length effort of Srinagar-based artist Ahmer Javed, is an acute aural experience of a psychotic breakdown.

Experienced by a creative trying to hone his craft in an environment engulfed by personal and political conflict, the album dives deep into the heart of Kashmir’s expansive history of folk music, as well as the effects of post traumatic stress suffered by countless families around the world due to similar circumstances that act as triggers.

‘Wolivo’ is the debut album of Kashmiri artist Ali Saffudin. 

This album encapsulates an angry Kashmiri voicing his truth, depicting experiences of anger, dissent, spirituality, and reformation that showcase the volatility of living in Kashmir. Using hard-edged alternative sound to trace the juxtapositions between chaos and beauty found at every turn of the valley whilst flowing through Ali's life as an artist living in a state of unrest.

Ali uses the poems, language, Kashmir’s elephantine landscape, and the visual imagery inculcated by his ancestry intertwined with every song. For Ali, silence is a means of resistance, especially when several dimensions of his identity are constrained by ideas manufactured by society’s stereotypes. 


Adding his own influences ranging from punk music, grunge, heavy metal, folk, and rock - ‘Wolivo’ juxtaposes the chaos and beauty found in the valley by employing a wide sonic spectrum that mimics the region’s paradoxes. The doublespeak in his writing flows between Urdu and Kashmiri while reimagining symbols of the Valley.

Existing in the world’s most militarised zone, with his identity criminalised - ‘Wolivo’ evokes the ownership of a Kashmir from Ali’s perception, one not defined by and bound to generations of persecution.

On ROV [Lost], we experience this loss through two different perspectives. Faheem Abdullah explores the emotions of a mother who has lost her son to the conflict - either via disappearances or encounters. On the other hand, Ahmer speaks about two lovers who lost their relationship and their ability to communicate due to the instability created by the conflict in the world’s most militarized region.

On Nishaan, Ahmer reflects on the disappearing traces of humanity in the valley and how despair, loneliness, anger and confusion have consumed every individual who is connected to the region since the conflict began. Madhosh Balhami, one of the most pertinent Kashmiri poets of our times, reflects on the loss and pain experienced by his community due to the violence engulfing the region - loss of their loved ones, from their land and the freedoms that every human being is inherently born with.

Over centuries, the history of the valley has remained within the landscape, surrounded by the Himalayas that shelter the valley from the outside world. ‘Wadiyo Mei’ uses 70s rock to create an ode to the mountains that have witnessed the ebb and flow of a civilization that dates back to 3000 BC and holds an everlasting significance in every aspect of their indigenous culture. But recent environmental degradation due to the carelessness of recent generations has infiltrated their daily life.

Inspired by legendary anti-establishment rock anthems, ‘Wolivo’ is calling for his people to take their liberation into their own hands by means of social reformation and political consciousness. ‘Wolivo’ promptly reminds us that people shouldn’t remain dormant and aspire to a life that allows them the dignity of choice. An anthemic track directed towards the youth of Kashmir, as the flag-bearers of the future that lies beyond and find glory in their heritage of dissent.

Written with bars like a rap song, ‘Jinki Wajah Seh’ is inspired by politically conscious hip-hop music of the 90s whilst also remaining true to the rock elements of the album. ‘Jinki Wajah Seh’ holds accountable the mechanism behind the continuous negligence of Kashmir, which unfolds in multitudes; Ali doesn’t shy away from criticising failed political systems destabilising Kashmir and the reluctance of his own people to embrace progressive politics.

‘Zehni Gulami’ challenges the conformity that permeates into all dimensions of society, and as the track points out, the most lethal kind of conformation is of one’s mind. For a marginalised individual, hope and faith are interwoven aspects. Ali reconciles their impact on ‘Zehni Gulami’ and introspects into the role of faith in identity and hope. He remains undeterred despite his faith and identity being questioned by the testing times, recognizing that there’s no getting rid of oppression unless one stays resolute and takes accountability for their actions.

Originally written by Peerzada ‘Mehjoor’ Ghulam Ahmad, ‘Walo Ha Baaghwano’ is a popular poem in Kashmir's literature that has seen several renditions over the years and, according to Ai, none of them channelized the rage reflected in the poem. Ali visualises Mehjoor as a major riling up his troops, using the vivid imagery of the Kashmiri landscape in the poem to inspire and remind his people that they can reclaim their stolen heritage. He ties in his interpretation of the song with the production of an unreleased instrumental called ‘March of the Free Army’.
