BuwanBuwan Collective’s J level, is a clear product of the videogame generation. Unlike most artists who find inspiration primarily from personal experiences alone, J level manages to draw out emotions by juxtaposing his own experiences with those representative of the videogame fantasy worlds he grew up immersing in. his unique cinematic soundscapes show hints of Celtic, Asian, Ethnic, Orchestral and Classical Music while also borrowing from more modern forms of music with a heavy sense of Ambient, IDM, Trap, Glitch and Bass. "Needing Things Only Kills You Slowly" transforms into an intersection of worlds, schools of thought. It is a feeling space, an excursion and an invitation to revisit your fantasies and to live in the world of dreams.

“A line from Owen's song 'Everyone feels like you' (2002). A song about how not everyone knows their current state in life but in most sorrowful scenarios, there is someone out there feeling just like you. But a line in the song "in time, you'll find needing things only kills you slowly" really captivated/ensnared my current life dilemma. I needed a lot of things like new equipment and gadgets, money, recognition of my works in school/music, girlfriend, etc; ending up being extremely depressed. The slow-paced suicide is done, eaten my very own soul and now i'm dead. Needing things is a self-torture confinement of ones soul.

While in the process, I created 6 songs that represent my mixed feelings of depression, paranoia and acceptance. The title of each song are from different scenarios and fan fiction concepts of different RPG games I love (Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Final Fantasy X), emotionally tailored, to cater and to honor its legacy.”

On ‘Catching Orbits’, Justo creates a soundboard for the creatures of night — shattering the static while the rest of the sheltered, unfazed world is in slumber. It is for the souls who roam the streets seeking for warmth; the ones who crave for company in crowded bars because they are spooked by their own shadows; the wide-eyed youth who still believe star-gazing is romantic; the lonesome worker who pulls a double shift rather than sleep in a ghost of a home; the ones whose faces are bathed not in the glow of the moon, but of their smartphone screens; the mother whose heart leaps whenever she sees the twinkling lights the moving star that will one day take her home to her children; the insomniac with eyes that swim between wakefulness and dreams; and the fathers in their blood-soaked shanties, whose last memory of sound is the bass of their hearts before they sail through the sea of silence. All their lives lived in a sequence of day and night, just doing their best to fill the empty in between. This is the sound of their routine.

“Quoting Terrace Martin, "I’ll say it again, we do music for them, for the struggling. That’s all we do it for is them, the people that understand struggle.” The tape channels my thoughts on Martin's quote. Thanks to music in general, my life and other people's lives are worth living for. The release is a way for me to pay the deed forward; I've been grateful for the local musicians and beatmakers for their music. Therefore, I want to do the same and help other people's lives be better everyday.

Buwan-Buwan is a traditional Filipino game that enacts the lunar eclipse. Players draw a circle on the ground representing the moon, and must stay inside this circle. Meanwhile, one player acts as the Bakunawa, the mythical giant sea serpent who would eat the moon: he may not enter the circle, but must touch another player who is inside it in order to switch places.

Buwan-Buwan has been all but forgotten by a generation of young, Filipino urbanites weaned on gadgets and mass media, but BuwanBuwan, a Pinoy beatmakers and electronic musicians collective, appropriate the concept of a game they in fact never played as children, transforming it into a framework for their perpetual creative exchanges, a take-off point for defining their indentity as Filipino artists, and above all, a common ground where they can all play.
