Baragan was born during the traveling Jense Meek did with his accordion as a faithful travel companion. Road trips without destination, but full of adventure. Inspired by the street musicians’ life, with its coincidental encounters and its drifting existence, lyrics were moulded around themes as leaving, letting go, opening up and looking inward. The music takes you along to places in southern Europe and northern Africa.

These are melodies collected through the years and recorded in 2016 on the same piano that I played when I started music lessons as a kid. 

Barranco Del Abogado is a neighborhood in Granada, Spain, where I spend a couple of months in 2014 on my two-year-accordion-streetmusic trip. I lived in a cave, which is quite practical there: cool in summer, warm in winters. I walked up & down the hills, playing the streets while the century-old alhambra watched over me. This piano piece is a memory of those days in southern Spain.

Muziek communiceert gevoel. Net als beeldende kunst trouwens. Hoe fascinerend is het dat abstractie, minimalisatie en herhaling deze emotionele stroom van versterken? 

Mondriaan liet dit zien als pionier in de beeldende kunst. In de muziek, veelal binnen de *minimal music*, waren het bijvoorbeeld Simeon ten Holt en Steve Reich. Met eenvoudig basismateriaal, herhaling & versmelting creëerden ze een emotionele hoogtepunten.

In ‘Compositie 10 in zwart wit’ gebruikt Mondriaan slechts horizontale en verticale lijnen. Het geheel is ondanks deze strikte beperking niet minder overweldigend. Het lijkt erop dat onze hersenen veel plezier hebben om dat wat weggelaten is op een poëtische manier weer in te vullen. 

In mijn compositie ‘Pianistic’, laat ik, geïnspireerd door de horizontale en verticale lijnen van Mondriaan, de linker- en rechterhand op de piano eenvoudige patronen spelen, die door herhaling, subtiele verandering en tegenstelling samenvloeien tot een groter geheel. Daardoor kun je je laten meevoeren. Het water, de golven, en de houten palen die ooit de inspiratie vormden voor 'Compositie nr. 10' nemen je zo mee naar een nieuwe, poëtische wereld.

This track is inspired by a painting by Mondriaan, 'Composition nr. 10 in black & white'. Like the vertical and horizontal lines in the painting, in this composition the left & right hand play simple patterns that, when combined, blend together forming an intriguing musical landscape, that leaves a lot of room for your brain to fill in and dream away with. Just like in the painting, that was originally inspired by the wooden poles of a sea pier and the waves that break under it.

This composition, recorded on a felted piano, feels small and light, as if it's a thought, a moment of reflection. 

Challenged to use only 4 chords by the pianist group 'the Piano Soundboard' (Dm Am Gm C), this little piece came out of my fingers, reminding me of Yann Tierssen, whose score for the Amelie Poulin movie must have occupied big parts of my piano brain....
