New chirp frequencies on your favourite origami crane mix series is little known to many, well known to certain BLT that deciphers into nothing less than BORN LIKE THAT. His bio is short but solid: BLT is founder of the roving Brooklyn late-night->early-morning party Party Line, one half of Boom Service Records on Discogs and host of Radio BLT on WFMU. Clearly an avid collector/selector, found him through the latter and can't get enough of his subtle mixing skills matched with a lovely music taste that is very close in its dance and dark pop sensibilities as myself. An eclectic all vinyl selection surfing through a variety of genres but balancing on a dubby frame speaks for itself. Dub in!

Birdcast 029: BLT

Birdcast no.30 is from Lithuanian bro Švenčionis - a musical flâneur (being generous) or self-satisfied dilettante of music (being almost honest). He has done many things around music, from writing about it (for some time even for legendary music journal Secret Thirteen) to playing it at parties, to organizing gigs containing it (having organized the first Esplendor Geometrico gig in 20 years, respectively in Vilnius, Lithuania). He calls himself a right moody c*nt, and this mix was created in a right moody time - the final stretch of the pandemic. About this recording he says: "I love it, but then again, I've never been able to record something I truly like that sounds different."

Birdcast 030: Švenčionis

Chirpcast to end the year is by La Serpiente - a side project by Rotterdam based italian sonic explorer, producer and live performer Marco Segato. He's the co-founder of Rete Neurale Milano E.S.T. and Empty Signal Transmission series curator.
During the last years he released his music under different monikers (La Serpiente, MS, Narvalos) on labels such as XCPT Music, Random Numbers, Communion Records, Dionysian Mysteries, Vastechoses etc. as well as on many solidarity compilations. His most recent release is cassette on Sons Of Traders Records 'DHIKR' as NARVALOS, a duo project with Alessio Costantino (aka Askmeaboutdogs).
Marco takes us on a druggy exotic trip throughout new and old tracks in an eclectic manner, mixing in quite a few of his own creations. Lose your skin!

Birdcast 031: La Serpiente

On the wings of butterflies and white doves come the new, Belgian Birds. Known for those who're into the occasional digging from the past (and present!) here's a selection made for the series by Jan Van den Broeke - Belgian artist and musician known to be head or at least part of such projects as The Misz and Absent Music, revitalized by Stroom, and more recently the lovely June11, April & June and Canto de Mudo. His latest albums are 11000 Dreams (2017), Lost and Latest (2020) and Time and Desire (2022).

In these dark times we find asylum in music more than ever. Offering a trippy and colourful, not so very dark entry - Aleksandr L., who is a DJ hailing from Vilnius, Lithuania. As the founder of @electric_shapes label, he has fostered a vibrant community of artists and music enthusiasts. Apart from his label, Aleksandr L. has also made a mark as a resident on Radio Vilnius. Hosting the monthly show "Drops & Volts," he consistently delivers a carefully curated mix of tracks that showcase his unwavering dedication to music exploration. Birdcast 035: Filmmaker

Newwww Birdcast from none other than the magnificent and a true pioneer @jayeward. Back before acid house changed the world, Jaye was already ploughing a unique path playing weird and wonky musics of all flavours at squat parties and industrial based do’s, she flung herself whole heartedly and without concern for her safety into the oncoming tsunami of what we would end up tagging as house, techno or the multitude of varying descriptive titles it has been given and has stayed true to ‘our thing’ ever since.

Dancing wildly at dirt box, the mutoid waste parties, the Hacienda, Ministry of Sound, Tonka, Moist, Sabresonic set her up for the ‘90s where, while Jaye was behind the counters of a number of Soho record shops during the day and doing the ambient ‘creamy meat’ show as bish on the legendary Chillin’ FM pirate radio, she was often found behind the decks at the legendary WANG parties, the back room at Golden in Stoke on Trent, her residency at London’s sadly defunct END with the ‘for your pleasure’ crew and numerous long gone all nighters and late into the night dark room parties. Getting her second wind at the start of the 00’s via the ‘Softmachine’ parties she ran alongside George ‘Black Merlin’ and Kyle & Johnny from ‘Land of Light’ she’s been playing regularly across the country for numerous nights such as LOVE MUSCLE & COSMIC SLOP in Leeds, HOMO BLOC & KISS ME AGAIN in Manchester and further a field as a resident at the KALA festival as well as Field Maneuvers, Love International and dimensions in Croatia. She is also the resident at long running & fiercely loyally supported Bristol party PLU, alongside Ranks which has carved out a name for interesting left of centre guests and a distinctly gnarly music policy. As well as a bi-monthly ambient tinged ‘starmaps’ show of MUTANT RADIO Jaye also runs the long running weekly monday night ‘FIBS’ show named after her record label of teh same name on Netil Radio, from which she broadcasts a weekly dose of all things.
For this occasion Jaye recorded a mix for the Bird series in the vein of the first one - a whirl and twirl of spacey dreamscapes and echoes from paralel ambient worlds. Dive in and through.

Birdcast 036: Jaye Ward

"The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.”, one well-known writer once said. And for the new Birds entry, I welcome @philipp-otterbach, long-time record collector of all kinds of music, DJ and producer, who would approve his words. For a long while he devotes himself with endurance to music. During the 2000s, he threw some forward-looking dances with his old buddy Vladimir Ivkovic in the German Ruhr region. And when Düsseldorf’s shrine for outer-national grooves Salon Des Amateurs opened in 2004, Otterbach became a one of the first residents. Since 2014 he is also out there with his very own sound, releasing EPs on labels like adventurous Dutch Knekelhuis, Themes for Great Cities, Brokntoys etc. In 2020 he dropped his debut album 'Everything Else Matters' on R.I.O.  followed by "The Dahlem Diaries" on Music From Memory Nowadays (2023) and "Correct me if I am incorrectly you" on Offen (2023). Listening to one of Philipp's DJ sets is like shuffling through an imaginary library. His musical language follows an intertwined logic of emotional affects, ineffable magic and endless fantasy. A man for suspenseful storytelling that likes to melt early electronic music, Krautrock, minimalism, and all sorts of tribal rhythms with eclectic voodoo dance, psychedelic guitar tsunami’s, house, techno and electro - always beautifully entangled with a precise feeling for special funk dynamics. This one is another great example of these antics too. Let the mind fly with the birds!

Birdcast 037: Philipp Otterbach

The first edition of Birdcast is presented to you by it's own curator Muk. Muk is a DJ, singer and an avid propagator of interesting, experimental and non-conformist music. In the past of the cult Lithuanian avant-pop duo Verslo Rizikos Rezervas (Bordello A Parigi) and the creator of Lithuania's oldest cultural magazine Ore.lt podcast series. Muk has collaborated with musical projects from Romania to Detroit to Mexico. Her latest output is a monthly show in Berlin's Cashmere Radio, called The Hidden Reverse - a poetic and twisted play on the daring, dark and elegant. 

Even though Muk may be more known for her esoteric and fourth world sets, she's always been a great fan of industrial and klang music. So here a selection of what she's been lately playing on dancefloors in Europe and Mexico: a blend of shadowplay, psychedelic, synth and industrial grooves, where dark sounds light and the other way around, call it if you will - industrial funk and enjoy.

Birdcast 001: Muk

The second birdcast in the series invites to listen and get to know R.B.Kopie aka Der Raubkopierer von Neukölln aka The Bootleger of Neukölln. It’s quite obvious where this pal is from, but in case you don’t know where Neukölln is – it’s in Berlin. Behind this somewhat funny yet without doubt romantic moniker hides Frank, previously known under such names as Optik or Herc Rillen, among others (don’t ever forget the ongoing present times inspired changes of someone who was Thin White Duke at some point). 

Frank told us he started collecting and playing records more or less fifteen years ago and in 2013 he founded his label Kashual Plastik. Frank used to be part of Kavinsky and Noise Boys and at the present he’s part of the duet Inkasso with Jacob Stoy, with whom they organize events and reléase a podcast series called The Wavering Form. Kashual Plastik has a monthly show on Cashmere Radio in Berlin – Plastik Universe, where once a month The Bootleger of Neukölln plays a live mix of his finds among the dark corners of the internet and beyond. So wellcome to the world of R.B.Kopie – a world without clear perception of time.

Birdcast 002: R.B.Kopie aka Kashual Plastik

Yoan Rodriguez Lokier is a DJ, producer and singer from Mexico City presently based in Berlin. Her distinctive sets and music is a mixture of post-punk, new wave, techno and electro with neo-gothic and horror movie soundtrack influences.

Her various projects include releases on labels such as Days of Being Wild, Have A Killer Time and Ivan Smagghe’s Disques de la Mort, as well as collabs and edits for the likes of Psychemagik, Zombies en Miami, Tone of Arc y Vito & Druzzi etc. and features in Thump, The Quietus, NTS & LYL. She’s also part of a duo along with French producer Morgan Hammer called She Made Monster. 

For this mix Lokier recorded us almost an hour sounds cold and dark as the streets of present Berlin, with subtle touches of psychedelia and radiant electricity. The cave’s been opened – greet the bats with the third edition of Birdcast.

Birdcast 003: Lokier

Young Drums are Josué Becerra and Diego Ferreyra, two friends and neighbours "since forever”, from Salamanca, León. They’ve been playing together for almost eight years. Young Drums like buying a lot of music in different formats and share it with people adapting themselves to the places they play. Their tastes are mostly directed into the territories of industrial, wave, techno and italo. The duo are also promoters of Rubro in Bajío (Supremo), residents of Radio (Irapuato) y White Rabbit (León),have played in such cult places outside of Mexico as Nova (NYC), Operator (Rotterdam), Renate (Berlin) among others. 

For the 5th POVCAST they’ve recorded us a smooth dancey hour of upbeat but still laid-back oddities sailing through their favourite genres, yet not losing pop sensibilities. Do the Safety Dance!

Birdcast 005: Young Drums

Retrofuturistic dance music has been dropping from this artist for about 30 years.  Never pushing to be seen, and surely not pushing enough to be heard, eLBee BaD is in the scene of electronica since its beginnings. Music industry leaders almost keeping him and his songs as a source of inspiration & their personal secret.  

Mr. BAD started as a child playing percussion & drums. In Junior High School he was the youngest member progressive R&B dance and original material group Platinum Enterprise. When older members left the band, he was left with a choice:  play drums alone or find something else where he didn't have to count on others to do what he loved best: perform & play music, and more importantly to make people dance! 

It was the very beginnings of turntablism, the introduction of Hip Hop Music. New York Hip Hop had no limits.  Slow “break beats” from Soul and Rock, to fast paced disco & the beginnings of Techno. Imagination was the key, to make crowds move to unknown yet HOT tunes was the way forward. The Mad Drummer became DJ Bad. 

In 1988/89 he began making music: original sounds and ideas and purposely trying very hard to sound like nothing ever heard before. That was and still is his passion! Bad released his first creation“JUST DON’T STOP THE DANCE” and at that time he sat in his day job of selling 12” records for one of NY’s major players in dance music distribution.  Soon he started his own record label, LaRhon Records. Concentration on originality and soul, not marketing or sales Mr. Bad layed out songs that were interesting and out the box.

Into the digital age, the Prince Of Dance Elbee BAD is  steady releasing mini albums, albums and compiling music that’s simply “unique” with the spirit of a NEW AGE OF FAITH. Bads Label, LaRhon, VooDoo Tracks, & Berlin Twins Muzik are thee main outlets for eLBee BaDs music today. & tomorrow?  Quote from LB: “I C THE FUTURE!”

Birdcast 006: eLBee BaD

Birds for the Mind is at last back on track and it's first offering after the hiatus is brought to by Mauritius Hermes aka Neugeborene Nachtmusik - a Dutch, Berlin based musician and selector. He's also part of the duo Milligram Retreat and now and then plays more acid and danceable sets under the moniker Saint Mauritius. 

The sound of his main project Neugeborene Nachtmusik is mostly inspired by the post-apocalyptic, ritualistic and utopian scenes or deeply personal experiences. His music has a cinematic approach; imaginary scenes that contain: utopia, daydreams, occultism, honor and hope, battlefields just after the battle. Some other significant sources of inspiration for Hermes's music is minimalism, ambient music and performance art. Not long ago, together with Jeroen Holthuis (Onont Kombar) Mauritius  started a label called 'Ordo Viatorum'.

These two beautiful and slow-burning hours Mauritius recorded for Birds for the Mind dwelve in the depths of a dark imagination - patiently diving deep down and  drippingly crawling back up. A true lonely and night listen, the mix was named by the author himself "Paradise Ascent". This is some newborn night music for you - this is Neugeborene Nachtmusik's ascent to paradise.

Birdcast 007: Neugeborene Nachtmusik

And here's the X edition of the Birdcast with Croatian young and rising DJ Maja Pa - still a relatively new face to the clubbing scene, also a part of bRAVE collective (w/ Le Chocolat Noir and ikonal). Influenced by many experimental, synth, wave and industrial bands, 80s - 90s production, classical music and brother's tape collections, Maja began her DJ career just a few years ago. While avoiding the stereotypical party sounds, she presents interesting, energetic, sometimes eclectic sets that vary between techno, electro, wave, acid, avant-garde and various experimentations. Joined in the bRAVE collective with a few other like-minded colleagues, Maja claims she's on a mission to bring the real rave feeling back to the raves and to present hidden treasures of unconventional party scene in Croatia. So far you had the opportunity to hear her play at numerous clubs in Zagreb, Rijeka, Ljubljana, alongside some honorable musicians such as Delta Funktionen, Andreas Gehm, Morphology to name a few. Since Maja has been noticed for sophisticated taste in music, some of her mixes were broadcasted on Intergalactic FM as well as on few other well known podcasts. 

Maja's recorded Birdcast at first strikes with it's really contrasting eclectica, but little by little the conductive thread is spotted in the dark, leading to a lovely hour of subtextual grooving. Birdcast 010: Maja Pa

New year for the Birdcast begins with none other than Roman Sputnik one of the three tigers of Digital Tsunami. There's not a lot to say about Roman because basically he's one of the greatest DJs and selectors out there that I've had the luck to get to know and enjoy his mixing both from distance and in real life: besides of being the technical head of Digital Tsunami, he's also a resident in their parties, half of the sometimes emerging from the obscurities duo Glark n Glark and "associate professor of partying in general" (that being prooved many times too).

This mix is a smooth and eclectic trip through slower grooves and hyper ambiences, goofy oldies from approximately the 80s and crisp gems from more recent times as well as some unreleased ones. If you want to touch the sky - just put a window in ya eye!

Birdcast 012: Times New Roman

The new edition of the Birdcast is brought to us by Kristopher Hall - as he primarily presents himself - a keen collector of records and a DJ  over 15 years now. Previously co-founded @brokntoys, but now concentrating on his new label @Subapical.

it's common to hear Kristopher play exquisite and all around fluid electro sets, but here he compiled us an all vinyl, eclectic though beautifully gradient in colour set of slower and darker electronic grooves, sludgy four to the floors and shiny scythes. A truly brilliant set of metal machine music and more.

This time Birdcast from Paris-based DJ and multi-tasker, Mykonos aka Anna. Mykonos is part of the collective Bruits de la Passion, known for its *free* and ecstatic festivals. I first came across with Mykonos with her beautiful mix for Lyl Radio's BISOU. She has also done mixes for Rinse FM and Night Travel on a Blanket.

In this mix Anna combines late 80's and early 90's spirit - a groovy trip through jungle noises on dubs and breaks and laid back downtempo.

Birdcast 014: Mykonos

BirdCast no.15 is by Konsistent: a synth lover and selector hailing from Vilnius, currently based in Copenhagen. He is a member of the infamous Untitled Tricks and Club Juma crews, that throw underground parties all over Copenhagen for the past few years. Konsistent released his music on labels like Macadam Mambo, Eine Welt, Elsewhere and others, with more stuff planned for 2019 already. As a selector, he explores the leftfield sounds from the last five decades of music history within any genre or style, and aims at creating a story through his selections.

This mix is in Konsistent's own words a mushroom trip. An hour and a half of downtempo, leftfield, trippy, goa-like sounds in tuquoise and bright greens.

So proud to have BirdCast No.16 by this guy, one and only @Wosto. Wosto was born in langeneicke during the days of apologies. He couldn't resist to the magic of everything. So... He took his mopped out to the world of caves an coves and came back as the back of Bäckerei Amelunxen. Now prepared to conquer Flanderen with just a fistful of nusscorner. He survived and went stronger.

BirdCast 016: Wosto

New Birdcast is by femdex founder and LYL Radio's SVVENIR author Hannah Christ aka Minou Oram. She is a DJ and producer blending music over many decades and styles between meditative serenity and dazing temper. Thereby her intimate sets can unleash a trance-like energy – resulting from her personal approach to play and listen to music as psychedelic catharsis, emotional vent and disruption of limitations.

In this eclectic approach she draws upon a wealth of musical influences and tends to channel her sound through the murky abyss of abstract electronica, tribal and cosmic timbres, industrial rawness, alienated pop, personal field recordings and more.

This mix is no exception to Minou Oram's style - a whirly introspective set into the heart of darkness with touches of blinking little lights so to guide the way. Exotic scents among obscure shaded electros and down-tempered blizzards.

Birdcast 017: Minou Oram

This time a more dancey Birdcast comes fromo Vasilis Marvel - Crete born London resident from. When younger in the 90s he was a drummer and had a death metal band. Through this he moved on the the industrial fields as well as other electronic music and towards the end of the 90s he started djing himself. In 2007 Marvel started throwing Healthy Summer with some friends, an annual 2 days party at South Crete which is still going on up to these days. Vasilis used to also host a monthly show in 199radio called Danse Macabre. 

This mix is an rhythmically eclectic selection of pretty mean gritty grooves. Various but fluid, not exactly metal-machine music but with subtle industrial moods and touches all around.

The BirdCast is back with an entry from Lithuanian deejay and promoter Hìldå. He's an avid experimental and obscure music collector as well as one of the brains behind the darker tribalistic party series in Lithuania called Isla along with Patricia Kokett. In this mix he recorded an hour of beautiful experimental soundscapes with touches of the native and spiritualo-primitive.

Birdcast 019: Hìldå

FBW aka @franz-benjamin-werner is a dj, selector and producer from Essen currently based in Berlin. He's a digger of ethno, psychedelic, wave, post-punk and experimental breaks' kind of sound, influenced by
industrial, techno, electro-boogie, and UK breakbeat rave. His first gig was in 1999 at Fusion festival in Münster, and around he 2004 brought into being his own party Mono Musik which happened up to 2012 and lately he's been holding  a monthly night in Weddng's Oh!Calcutta called Afra Mode. Other places he's played includes Salon des Amateurs, Jäger, Goethebunker, Hotel Shanghai, Sisyphos, Generator among others.

This mix FBW did for BirdCast is an eclectic set of various quirks in the vein of waves and experimental oddities, ocre and turquoise tone a with gritty cassette touches and acids breaks.

Syntha Ruce aka Rosemarie Pilz was born and lives in Vienna Austria. She has spent most of her writing grants time producing music fka Deflection Pulley, and has a true passion about the 80ies, industrial, rough noisey stuff and minimal-wave. Her selections you'd normally come across internet are a sort of conceptual mixtapes following a sub-textual, sort of literary narrative while surfing among various genres through a real connaisseur selection. New Birds for your mind is from Tel-Aviv based DJ and producer Rapha:  1/2 of the fresh 'Chateau Royal' imprint, which will have the 3rd release by Rapha & PRZ incoming soon, as well as resident at the local Alphabet club for the last years. Birdcast 023: Ranishe Niyaak

24th Birdcast comes from one and only @SneakerDJ who has been on a mission to reveal the origins of electronic music for more than twenty years now. Whether as a producer or DJ – Sneaker is doing it properly but always after careful consideration. He loves music which imparts atmosphere and attitude towards life, even in a parodying way that doesn’t take it all or itself too serious. Early on, he fell in love with Detroit and Chicago but furthermore there are the obscure Italo, new wave and minimal synth gems that make his sets and Dunkeltier edits special and provide his productions with that edgy Sneaker flavour.

The selection in this session is closely bound to his project with @Scannoir. They released two records named ½GOTT and GOTT plus remixes and edits. Together they are performing as a DJ tag team playing extended sessions of old school EBM. That's the sound you can listen to here as well!

The session was recorded on the 26th of September 2019 at Yu-Yu in Mexico-City, Mexico during his 2nd PanAmerican tour.

Birdcast 024: Sneaker DJ

Throughout my all times of curating podcasts and mix series I've always loved inviting people who normally are not selectors or deejays and ask them to compile a set of music that inspired them throughout their musical journey or just play around with sounds that move something inside them. Such is this Birds for the Mind entry with Mexican minimal electronics artist Rogelio Serrano, more known as @Equinoxious, who did a mixtape on both. Rogelio Serrano's creative work is focused on the sound and rhythmic design carried out using analogue synthesizers and the eurorack modular system, inspired by the landscapes and high-speed vehicle trips, the interferences, organic and non-organic structures distributed in different social dystopian settings by which Latin America is characterized, the lights and the night life; shapes that remain when you close your eyes and bring sound imagery that can be modelled through voltage control, filters and oscillators. Other prominent influences include the artistic trends originating in the twentieth century such as creationism, constructivism, science fiction, minimalism, and futurism. 

So here a lush selection of tracks spanning from crystalline synthetic ethers to lo-fi beasties both from past, present, always aiming to the future.

Number twenty-eight in the Birds series is by Ziggi D’Agostino which is an alter ego of Lithuanian writer, artist and performer Zygimantas Kudirka. 
Every DJ set of his is a journey through many genres from different regions in search for the contemporary psychedelic sound that sometimes is achieved by messing around with pitch and effects or playing multiple tracks at once.
