Olympic Winter Games 2018, Gangneung Curling Center: A new track shall be created that will support South Korea during the Round Robin. When the athletes move in, Ex-Mono & Jan 10ner play their typical dub techno sounds, which are carried by tablas and meet dreamy chords. The audience is sitting on its chairs and crosses the fingers for Second Seong Se-hyeon before he places rock three and four. The track picks up the calm gliding of the stone and the anxious silence that is only disturbed by Skip Kim Chang-min and his calls. Until everyone knows: Double Take Out! The stone slides out of the “house” and the discipline slips away in the hall. Driven by a house bassline and organic shakers, the audience celebrates the team. With a touch of acid, the rocks glide through the track at 108 bpm without losing sight of the target coordinates.

3021 begann für uns eine neue Zeitrechnung. 

Eigentlich wollten wir auf dem @3000-grad Festival was anderes spielen, jedoch konnten wir an unseren Ideen nicht mehr festhalten. Denn es gab so viele Begegnungen mit bekannten sowie neuen Seelen, so mega schöne Visuals und Sounds, die wir kaum verarbeiten konnten nach Monaten der Abstinenz. Es gab euch, die ihr gerufen habt „Lauter“. Und es gab den Wind, der Richtung Feldberg wehte und der zu uns rief „Leiser“. Zwischen @ilcivetto und @we-kuyen stimmten wir daher Klänge an, die sich wie sanfte Wellen durch ein Universum aus Emotionen schieben sollten. 

Also: Augen zu und los! Wir sind so unaussprechlich dankbar, dass wir diesen mit unglaublich viel Liebe erschaffenen Rest der Realität mit euch zusammen erleben durften.

We can only guess what is going on out there, e.g. in the Mediterranean. Matthias aka M.Age.Project lernte Dr. Christian Rätsch, den bekannten Ethnologen und Schamanismusexperten aus Hamburg, der in aller Welt schamanische Kulturen und deren ethnopharmakologischen, ethnomedizinischen und rituellen Gebrauch von Pflanzen und Pilzen erforscht hat, bei mehreren Seminaren kennen, woraus sich ein freundschaftlicher Kontakt entwickelte. Als sie im Verlauf eines privaten Treffens während der Pandemie im Sommer 2020 die Maya-Sprachaufnahmen für diesen Track aufzeichneten, konnte noch niemand ahnen, dass dieses gebündelte Erfahrungswissen aus der entlegenen Urwaldwelt der Lakandon*innen im Süden Mexikos, bei denen Christian drei Jahre gelebt hat, so schnell zu einem Vermächtnis werden würde.

Diese drei essentiellen Sätze auf Lakandon-Maya hat Christian uns mitgegeben:
• ki' ile tu' kabin - Sorgfältig siehe, wohin du gehst.
• ki' ibah awilik tech - Sorgfältig betrachte die Dinge, die du siehst.
• ki' känan ta bäh - Sorgfältig beschütze dich selbst.

Aus der rhythmischen Gestalt des ersten Satzes hat Matthias alle Kernelemente seines organisch federnden Slow-Psy-Tracks abgeleitet und mit der Übertragung der Sprachaufnahme per Formant-Motion-Funktion in seinen Korg-Radias-Synthesizer einen einzigartigen, geheimnisvollen Sound-Trip kreiert.
Andreas Balicki, AmuAmu, Pay Kusten und Ex-Mono erkunden mit ihren unverwechselbaren Remixen weitere Klangräume in den unendlichen Weiten zwischen Natur und Klangsynthese.

Christian Rätsch starb am 17. September 2022 unerwartet an den Folgen eines Magengeschwürs.
Mit größtem Respekt danken wir ihm für seine außergewöhnliche Arbeit und seine freundliche Zusammenarbeit mit uns. 
Ebenso bedanken möchten wir uns bei den Lakandon*innen, die in freundschaftlicher Unterweisung ihr unschätzbares Wissen über das Leben im Regenwald mit Christian geteilt haben, damit es der Welt erhalten bleibe.
Im Sinne von Christians Lebensmotto „Liebe das Leben!“ wollen wir nun mit unserer Musik die „Essenz“ zusammen mit euch auf der Tanzfläche weitertragen!

About this journey:
The story of Mono&Kusten (aka Ex-Mono & Pay Kusten) started with two cancelled gigs in the beginning of 2020. Two years and several gigs later the combined sound of both merged into an unforeseeable style with Organic House and Techno in the centre and different other styles that suddenly can occur during their sets. 
 
For the Cosmovision Podcast the two guys from Hamburg in Germany selected a mixture of energising and calming organic tracks that represent their idea of music. The title of the podcast is a homage to their home which serves as a never ending source of tranquility in times of hectic rush.

🎧 Mono & Kusten present „Zephyr“ Afterhour Sounds Podcast Nr. 265 🎧

Unsere Nr. 265 kommt heute abermalig aus dem hohen Norden Deutschlands. Meeresluft tut bekanntlich gut. Und deren Musik umso mehr. Die Rede ist von den beiden Künstlern @ex-mono und @paykusten, welche nicht nur als DJ’s und Produzenten sehr aktiv sind, sondern auch Teil des bekannten Festivals „Meeresrausch“ (https://meeresrausch-festival.de/) und des angelehnten Labels „Meeronauten“ (https://soundcloud.com/meeronautenmusik) ihrem künstlerischen Schaffensdrang Ausdruck verleihen. 

Ihr aufgenommener Mix „Zephyr“ ist einer dieser Mixe, welche einen von Anfang in den Bann ziehen. Organische Soundstrukturen und zum Träumen einladende Melodiepassagen gehen hierbei stets Hand in Hand. Mal etwas deeper, dann wieder cineastisch herzergreifend reihen sie konsistent und harmonisch einen Klasse Track nach dem Anderen an und schaffen schlussendlich ein großartiges Mixtape der Marke zeitlos. Ein Set welches in Erinnerung bleibt und dem Prädikat Storytelling mehr als gerecht wird.

Wie gewohnt haben wir den Beiden ein paar Fragen zukommen lassen, in denen sie ein wenig mehr über sich, ihrer Lieblingsafterhour und dem Mix erzählen.

✔️ Was sind eure musikalischen Einflüsse? 

Wir sehen uns als musikalische Kosmopoliten. Unsere Einflüsse und Hintergründe sind gleichzeitig recht ähnlich und könnten doch nicht unterschiedlicher sein. Ex-Mono ist ein Kind der 80er und wurde durch den Basic Channel Sound in den 90ern sozialisiert. Als Vinyl DJ prägten ihn weiterhin Electro, Nu Jazz und Liquid Drum and Bass, bis dann erste Sets bei den Pyonen erfolgten. Pay Kusten stieß Mitte/ Ende der 2000er auf seine ersten musikalischen Helden der elektronischen Szene und wurde durch den minimalistischen und deepen Open Air Sound in Mecklenburg, bei dem speziell die komplette 3000 Grad Bande zu nennen ist, geprägt. Diese verschiedenen Einflüsse verbinden sich im Sound von uns beiden und überraschen uns selbst in vielen Sets aufs Neue. 

✔️ Was macht eurer Meinung nach her eine gute Afterhour aus?

Da wir beide selten die letzten einer Party sind, können wir das für die klassische Afterhour gar nicht sagen. Wir fassen das Thema mal ein wenig weiter und beziehen die Frage auf einen Festivalsonntag. Hierbei lichtet sich nach den Hauptfestivaltagen das Publikum schon etwas und die meisten Gäste sind bereits zufrieden mit dem Erlebten. Und dann ist es am schönsten, wenn bei Sonnenschein und einem feinen Getränk auf einem gemütlichen Floor nochmal eine musikalische Überraschung wartet und man beseelt und beeindruckt von den Erfahrungen bei guter Musik mit entspannten Leuten das Festivalwochenende ausklingen lassen kann.

✔️ Welche Gedanken mögt ihr uns zu eurem Mix mit auf den Weg geben?

Unser Set für Afterhour Sounds ist eine Hommage an den Festivalsonntag. Weniger Druck, eine Prise Entspannung, ein Schluck Mojito, ganz ganz viele Sonnenstrahlen und ein laues Lüftchen.

As she left the house, she was afraid some of her neighbors would stop her or ask where she was going. She felt she must look mysterious, with a large bag on her back and full of excitement. When the mother called them for dinner, both refused to move, each clinging to their dishes of wet dirt; She had to smile at their foolishness. So she walked right out of the village without causing a second glance. At the edge of the village, she turned toward Fruitless Mountain. At the bottom of the mountain, she unwrapped her blanket and took out her knife, needle, rice bowl, bamboo piece, and jug of water. Then, trying to remember all of the goldfish’s instructions, she cracked off a small bit of stone and rubbed it up and down the needle 99 times before tossing it back to the ground. Then she filled her rice bowl halfway with water and let the bamboo float in it. After that, she picked up the needle and looked at the white rabbit on her bowl. “Okay,” she said to the jumping rabbit, “lead the way.” And she placed the needle onto the bamboo. Like magic, the needle spun around. She smiled. LamatUuc takes the rabbit out of the bowl and give us magic for the next century. This is his first offering for Shango Records. These two tracks can rise a hope in between stars. CharlieM, Mono & Kusten and Nayaim are bamboo lovers and star chasers.
