"Wildflower"- Josh Sahunta

Here is my cover of "O" by Coldplay which I first heard in Zane Lowe's interview with Chris Martin. They played only the first 30 seconds or so of the track and I fell in love with it. Wanted to be the first to make a cover and had to improvise the rest of the song in order to do that! Really hope you enjoy it :)

I grew up listening to pop-punk music and it shaped who I am as a musician today. I thought why not try making a pop-punk song? It's not the norm for me, but maybe it should be.

Anyways, this is "reckless" and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!

My final release of 2023. 

I wrote this song at 4am one morning after waking up from having the guitar melody stuck in my head. I debated whether to get out of bed to try and record it before it was forgotten, or to roll over and go back to sleep. I'm glad I chose the first option. 

I wrote the entire song that morning and decided that it had to be my next single. 

"turn off the lights" comes from a place of being exhausted from all of the hardship endured over the past year. After losing 2 loved ones so close to each other, it has been hard to get on with life without feeling a sense of detachment from all the beautiful moments. 

If you're feeling a sense of grief coming into this winter season, whether from a breakup, the death of a loved one, or even just things not going your way, I hope this song can be a shoulder to cry on when things get too tough to handle.

“Doing my Best” is the final track on the record, and centers on the feelings of inadequacy that individuals sometimes feel in relationships, where they feel that they are constantly putting in their best effort, but are never really able to satisfy their partners. It speaks on this topic in a fun, playful way that focuses more on creating a sense of light-hearted frustration as opposed to the heaviness that is characteristic of the other songs.

“Sing Me to Life”, the first song released from the album, puts the audience into the state of mind of an individual on the night of a breakup. It represents the multitude of conflicting thoughts that occur when an individual in a toxic relationship tries to commit to ending that relationship, but faces the reality of suffering without a person they have become so attached to.

“Take All I Am”, the song that begins the album, talks about becoming so deeply embedded in a toxic, unfulfilling relationship that the individual involved ceases to try to find a way out. The song centers around the psychological concept “learned helplessness”, which occurs in aversive situations where there seems to no escape.

"We'll Be Alright" is both a question and a statement in this new song of mine. It's about dealing with relationship issues during a global crisis. It's about all the craziness in the world right now and navigating it while trying to cope with the toll it takes on your mental health. Really hope you dig this one.

When it comes to setting the bar high, Canadian r&b-pop artist Josh Sahunta never lets his feet touch the ground. Drawing upon his influences of  John Mayer, Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd, the self-taught multi-instrumentalist and singer uniquely positions himself as a songwriter with substance. 

Since his humble beginnings in 2013 after releasing his first EP “Lights”, young and restless Josh Sahunta is no stranger to the level of intensity required to stand out in the music industry. Determined to consistently perform at a high-caliber, Josh somehow balanced playing shows and recording his album, while simultaneously working two jobs and studying clinical psychology full- time at the University of Alberta.

Attracting a combined social media following of 6000 strong and progressing far in competitions like CBC Searchlight and Edmonton’s Hot Factor might sway skeptics to believe it’s all ego. However, Josh’s career wins have only encouraged him to give back tenfold. Having already travelled to Uganda to teach music, he continues volunteering his talents for the betterment of the less fortunate.
