“Making cdr_ lasted a day; releasing it has been a five-year endeavor. What prevented release? […] Today I hear signs of perfectionism hovering not on the level of composition or studiocraft but in how I was conceiving of my own artistic intent and what implications I hoped releasing the music would have on my life after crisis. Made one year after I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, cdr_ ushered a re-evaluation of my relationship with music, technology, mental illness, and grief. Below, I share cdr_ for the first time, together with reflections on how the ritual of releasing has changed for me through time.”

Bennett Kuhn's debut Open Heart (2019) is an original essay-album composed at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan during and after his sister's pulmonary valve replacement surgery in May 2019. Published initially through a musician-in-residency position with the Synapsis journal of medical humanities at Columbia University, Open Heart will be released digitally on Astro Nautico in July.

"Kuhn from Brooklyn's Astro Nautico collective recently transformed Gilberto and Getz's 'Corcovado' into a dubstep, drag-and-drop beat that hesitates, then hits in both rhythm and tempo. Astrud Gilberto's voice blows bossa nova kisses your way, while Stan Getz's saxophone salutations make you feel right at home. Gilberto's voice rises to the foreground, doing a stereo sway from left to right, keeping the breezy Ipanema lounge aura intact, while the pianos and saxophone sound like they were drenched in purple drank, slurred to resemble free jazz wails. It's a track that has a day-drunken, dubstep swagger and plenty of sun-drenched bossa nova charm, but it's still cooler than cool-- ya, ice cold."

Bennett Kuhn's meditative neoclassical project bc_ combines minimalist grand piano with shimmering digital electronic experimentation. Composed in quarantine on Long Island on the 100th birthday of Kuhn's recently deceased grandmother, 'Magnolia II' bubbles with mirthful remembrance and wonder at the unfathomable distance of long life as glimpsed in the beautiful magnolia tree's annual cyclical passage from florescence to decrescendo and silence between. 

'Magnolia II' premiered on www.dreamerswelcome.tv on Easter Monday 2020 through artist and phytophile Michelle Ishikawa's Magnolia Interludes series, which invites musicians to score a 15-minute video of Ishikawa's magnolia tree every day in quarantine. "Magnolia Interlude is a daily music video series created to soothe our eyes and ears by memorializing a moment in the life of our magnolia tree." https://www.okimoto.co/magnolia-interludes

Bennett Kuhn is a Philadelphia-based music producer, writer, teaching artist, community organizer, and co-owner of the Philadelphia/Brooklyn-based record label @AstroNautico (est. 2009). 

He is musician-in-residency at the Synapsis journal of health humanities at Columbia University and a co-organizer of Philadelphia-based Creative Resilience Collective, a multidisciplinary network of artists, technologists, designers, care providers,  academics, and others working with and for underserved populations in Philadelphia to improve access to quality mental health care.
